Wow, what a breath of fresh air. Kingsfield-likes are getting popular since Lunacid and this is the best one I've played so far. Highlights: + Exploration and secret-finding is central to the experience. You are allowed to get lost but there is cryptic direction if you talk to the right NPC. + Despite looking like a game from a simpler era, the developer came up with some interesting level design with plenty of verticality. Some of these designs borrow heavily from famous Fromsoft ideas, but I'm not complaining. + You can get your ass turned inside out by approaching the wrong enemies at the wrong time with the wrong weapon, but you can easily turn that situation on its head by learning their weaknesses, picking up superweapons, solving a puzzle, or grinding for about 10 minutes. Experience quotas don't increase out of control like they do in other ARPGs. When you get stuck, there is always something else you can work on. + No bloodstains, no soul penalties on death. When you die, you only lose whatever incremental progress you made since your last save. Shortcuts will connect you back to the most recent save point and they are not spaced out too far from each other. + There are a handful of pretty metal moments in this game that surprised me in the best ways, from dropping into an area that gave me goosebumps to a sudden, visceral cutscene where the player character cheats death in a way only Mad Max could. + The game is pretty big. Quibbles: - The lore is kind of silly. - The fact that everyone wears a mask and you pick a mask to determine your starting stats doesn't really impact any other part of the game. It's not anything like Majora's Mask where you would swap masks to use different abilities. The masks themselves don't seem to have any other gameplay contribution beyond theme. - The voice acting is pretty lame. I think the developer does most of the voices and they are way too cute and subdued to match the relatively polished product they ended up with. That can work for some characters for some lines, but its almost all the male characters and all of their lines. - Inventory menus don't wrap around - Blocking with a shield is too slow and lumbering to be a viable strategy Overall, I am having a blast with this game and strongly recommend it to players who prefer Souls-likes for the exploration, secret finding, puzzle and problem solving.

It's a pretty hard game, new enemies throw different things at you, and you have to figure out ways to outsmart them to make it easier. There are also YouTube content this game is released with which is pretty cute, and fun to follow along. The voice acting is serviceable. There are minor physics bugs where enemies can push you into walls, but this doesn't happen very often in my experience, but frustrating if my progress is reset. It's pretty hard to get lost, routes are typically split and then converge into a point, so it's for the most part, linear like Dark Souls 3. Pretty fun game if you like the King's Field aesthetic from Lunacid.

TL;DR A very solid take on Kings Field with some big balance problems. As a dungeon crawler, this game oozes atmosphere. There are plenty of fun areas to explore, filled to the brim with dangerous enemies, some light puzzles and lots of ways to die. The gameplay loop boiled down is exploring areas, killing enemies for xp and drops to get stronger. Repeat this till the end of the game. Loot variety is okay, Magic users will have a big drought until the final parts of the game where int scaling weapons suddenly become available in great amounts. Dex and Str users have plenty of options before that. Balance overall is one of the biggest issues of the game though in my opionion: There are barely any defense options available. A few shields, jumping and backstepping is all you get. There is no armor, so the only way to survive attacks better is increasing your hitpoints by any means available, which means you have to allocate some stats to that no matter your intiial build goals. Enemy attacks have often very janky animations that have little to do with how and where they are going to hit you, some can hit you multiple times before you react. Also any flying enemy can just phase through any walls, which feels a bit lazy. I know why this was done (to avoid pathfinding issues with walls etc) but it feels odd when a Moth suddenly flies through a building to attack you when you had no chance of spotting that enemy beforehand. A lot of enemies also cannot be safely engaged in melee, so ranged options are a necessity. Still, none of these are bad enough to bring the game down completely. I enjoyed meeting all kinds of strange characters on my travels, fighting all kinds of monsters, bosses and exploring all the locales in the game thoroughly to uncover their secrets. This game also avoids pitfalls I had with other indie takes on Kings Field (aka Lunacid) by having a pretty coherent world to explore instead of random areas stitched together.

If you liked Lunacid, Dread Delusion, or just want a fresh modern take on King's Field then this is an insta-buy. Tons of content and rewarding secrets, making it very re-playable as builds are super fun to experiment with and tweak. The story and world building are nice and intriguing, however the one and only gripe I have with the game is the VO, which shatters any immersion and vibes you were getting when approaching characters. I ended up cranking the dialogue volume to 0%, this imo helped immensely. I will say tho that I do appreciate the fact that this is an indie title and more suitable VO couldn't be sourced/afforded, and even more appreciative that human voice acting was used. Other than that, the game is incredible and I really hope it sells enough to justify a sequel!

Developers are actual chads for providing a 4 hour demo and being able to transition your demo save straight into the main game.
