The game has great concept. I like first half of the game, it is exactly what I was looking for. Combat is amazing, missions are nice and later wars against factions are great fun. Ship mode graphics are very crisp. I like the style, although it is clearly product of a small budget. Up to this point, it is great game, challenging, but fun. Sure, it crashes every 2 hours randomly, but whatever. I can live with that. But at the mid or end of the main story, it is clear that the developer had little to no resources for actually finishing, polishing and balancing the game. I get it. I bought the game at full price for 9 euro, which means he gets maybe 5. And I suspect majority of purchases are during sales, which makes his revenue (not profit) in range 1-2 euro per copy. I pity him for this, he deserves more money for such great game, but it is what it is. I think the main problem is there are too many systems that he could not possibly balance or even deprecate as non-functional concept. And this is my main problem. For instance the overworld combat. I have no idea about how it is implemented internally, but from what I experienced there is insane discrepancy between ship combat and overworld combat. At least when fighting Outsiders - the endgame faction. There are main story missions where you need to destroy Outsider fleet with yours of maybe 1.5x size of the enemy's. You have a destroyer, they have a destroyer. And you win quite easily. It is challenging, sure, it may take few attempts before you realize their weapons are strong, but you win with 2/3 or 1/2 of your fleet left. But when fights are conducted in overworld mode, you will just lose even with bigger fleet. And I am not talking like 2x size fleet. I understand that enemy ships are stronger. But when they have 30 ships, where only 1 is a destroyer, their fleet should be obliterated against your 30 destroyers, 40 frigates and 50 corvettes. Just because the amount of time and resources to acquire this fleet is considerably higher. And with this you fully arrive to non-balanced semi-finished part of the game. These overworld results are not consistent for some reason. Because sometimes you just win with very little casualities. I have no idea why, it may very well be a bug. So sure, then you say "ok, lets bruteforce it" and you will just sit in your base and keep spamming ships and watching the other factions to lose horribly against Outsiders. Then you face the issue of UI that is well-polished for first part of the game (it is quite immersive), but is very annoying in lategame, when you play the game more like an RTS. But maybe it is intended. Maybe at this point such a game is lost strategically and I should start playing from scratch. But I think it is just lack of game polish and balance in lategame area. Understandable due to above reasons, but it's annoying nevertheless.

Is this the definitive 4X and Dogfight combination space game? Not quite. But for 8 Euros its a fun game to sink a few hours into. The Ships control well, and especially flying smaller craft is fun - dodging around larger ship's firing arcs to get into range. Larger ships move lumberingly, as you would expect, and i can see how some players would prefer piloting a slow but powerful ship instead as well. Overall, having played a bunch of similar games, i'm impressed at how intuitive and 'correct' flying a ship in VD2 feels compared to those other titles. I really like the way the ships and stations look in game, as well as the bullets and missiles. In larger engagements, it can get a little crowded of course, but i don't see a way around that either. I've seen other reviews critisising the look of the game though, so i guess the graphics are very subjective. Just based on those two things alone, this game is worth giving a try. The best part of this game IMO is flying around with a small group of smaller ships, and if that's all you're looking for, here you go! Other than that however.... The quests are passable. Some are better than others, but mostly it comes down to 'fly here, destroy this', which isn't revolutionary, but, well, passable. The story is similar. Some small amount of exploration, but mostly 'fly here, fight this fleet'. The issue here is that there is no real indication of how difficult the encounters are before you start them - and taking the 'recommended' amount of ships will usually leave you way outgunned. The solution here is to always be over-prepared, and to amass one massive fleet to steamroll every story quest, which leads to the next issue: Crashes and Lags. The game auto-saves very often, which at least allows you to get back to the crash point quickly, but considering a main draw of the game is getting a large fleet together, that part is very very unstable. Some ship types are especially prone to crashing the game, which can lead to repeating the same fight several times to try and get lucky. The fleet portion of the game generally feels a little underdeveloped. Controlling fleets remotely works alright, but for some reason cant be done everywhere, requiring you to dock somewhere first. Managing ship types in fleets is a massive pain, and managing stations is even worse. Its a shame then that the chaos in large battles as well as the crashing incentivises using these mechanics more and more as the game goes on. The UI is generally not great either. Even so, give it a try - I still feel like the flight sim alone is worth the price of admission, and if you can stand the rest, that's just bonus on top.

Game crashed like crazy for me, almost constantly. Almost gave up on it. I don't know if it was the culprit or just coincidence, however I changed the game from full screen to windowed and suddenly it works fine with zero crashing... If you're a fan of games like Elite, X4, Starsector and other space sandboxes, I highly recommend Void Destroyer 2. It's pretty much like a streamlined X4 - Simple trading and mining with a big focus on combat. Ships have light customization, allowing you to streamline them towards specific purposes or expand their options for a more jack of all trades approach. Alot of fun for the price, glad I didn't give up on it.

Love this game would recommend 10/1. You go from humble fighter pilot to space warlord. Spent plenty of time playing and thoroughly enjoying this game. There is an awesome albeit small modding community around this game that add some cool stuff.
