I was a big fan of the first Wall World. Despite some flaws, my main criticism was that it felt too short, I really wanted to spend longer in this world. So I was really excited for this sequel, since it meant more of what I liked. However, it feels like the devs overcorrected a lot. The game abandons the massive level you can spend hours climbing, and instead has a "missions" system, where you choose a mission to go on, complete it, and go back to a hub. This *does* make the game longer. It also makes it very grindy. The appeal of Wall World to me was... the Wall. This infinite stretch of rock that you can climb in either direction, exploring and gathering resources while repellling waves of enemies. That was the Wall World fantasy. I am baffled by this decision to remove the "infinite" nature of the Wall. Instead of feeling like an explorer, bravely climbing where no one has gone before, you repeat the same missions in the same environments, complete the research bar, do one special mission, then rince and repeat. And those missions aren't varied or interesting enough to keep me engaged, either. That's not to say everything is bad in WW2. There's a lot of improvements in several areas. QoL, upgrades, world building, combat, a lot changed for the better. I especially like the new combat in the mines, which feels engaging and breaks the monotony of mining. I love love love the bigger mines, there's such a visceral pleasure to digging deeper and deeper and having to make a mental map of where you are and keeping track of what you've already explored, where the dangers are, where the loot is, etc. But... here comes the second incomprehensible decision. One of the best gameplay loops of WW was the push and pull of going further in the mine for just a little more loot vs the threat of the Zygex raids. If you didn't plan your trips carefully, you could lose precious seconds at the start of the next raid, and that pressure was integral to the game. This is why I cannot understand the reasoning behind adding teleporters in the mine. These blocks, that you can find easily and often, straight-up just teleport you immediately at the mine entrance without any drawbacks, as many times as you want, thus negating any sense of danger and tension. Why be careful not to go too far in the mine? Why worry about inventory space? Why bother memorizing the mine layout? Just find a teleporter and bam, you're home free with time to spare for the raid. All of the risk and reward, the tension, the thrill of exploring deeper, gone. If the teleporters where one-time use, or harder to find, or required a resource to activate, maybe they could have been fine, but as they are they kinda ruin the experience. This, plus the mission structure, makes Wall World 2 a lot less fun than the first game, and that's such a shame. I wanted the combat to be a lot more like Risk of Rain, where the danger keeps ramping up and up and up, and you need to move your ass if you want to keep up with the enemies. I wanted the mining to be more like Minecraft, where you get lost in the caves and need to find your way back. I wanted the world to feel more like Rogue Legacy, where you keep going foward and go a little further each run. I wanted the lore to be more like Axiom Verge, full of questions and mysteries, but with enough information to piece it together yourself (why is there no menu to read the lore you've found?) This is my biggest problem with Wall World 2 : I wanted it to be a lot more than it actually is. I wanted the team at Alawar to identify the strengths of their game, and hone in on the fun at the core of it. Instead it feels like they took every step to move away from it, which baffles me. Anyway, if like me you wanted more Wall World, well there is some of it in here. I can't deny that I had some fun playing the game. I'm finding it difficult to recommand playing Wall World 2, but a lot of it comes from how thouroghly the game disappointed me. It's not a bad game, just not the game I wanted.

Great game but it has issues and lacks polish. The good: fun gameplay loop, fair amount of variability, interesting level and enemy design, engaging upgrades and mac support which is always appreciated. The bad: boss battles, some zones are annoying, very few QoL mechanics that are desperately needed (*), the puzzle sections is painfully boring and elongated, lacks permanent upgrades that make the early runs a bit more enjoyable while the late run feels too powerful so the transition to a new run is kinda sad. QoL/Cleanup needed: The sound sliders don't save, "Dark" areas break a bunch of light sources, gathering dust is too grindy and therefore buying drinks doesnt seem worth it, caves generate a wall that blocks the starting laser so its basically wasted, having no starting weapon choice makes it so its almost never worth it to not use the basic gun, the helper bot ai is very lacking and gets stucked constantly, sprinting is almost never possible since long straight tunnels are rare except in 1 mine type, abilities are not ordered by number, extra weapons cant be disabled/disallowed from the quick swap, quick teleports back to the spider is finicky to carry a upgrade ball back, "heavy" items that cant be sucked up are awful to carry back, some recurring upgrades feel lackluster for the price, some spider hull/chasis feel so clearly inferior it makes no sense to keep them in rotation, leaviathan fights shouldn't have aditional enemies,

First one was better It's a technical improvement in many ways over the first one. The controls are better, there are more upgrades and weapons and I enjoy the new mining tools and combat. So on it's own this is a solid game. However, gameplaywise the first one had much better pacing. WW2 chops every map into very small sections. Drill 2 or 3 times per map max, pull out for meta reward, rinse-n-repeat. Everything you unlock is gone as fast as you got it you just never max out any of the weapons, never see their power curve, never experience any contrast between early and late game. This gives the gameplay a very grindy "whatever" flow and kinda removes any choice with your unlocked tech, because if you don't invest into literally the first item you find you won't be spending your resources at all before recall. Makes me feel a lot less invested into my runs than I did in WW1 and it feels like I've seen everything already after only 5h.

Initial Thoughts: Awesome continuation of the first game, great experience so far. Couple hours in: Art is insanely cool, one small bug (Getting the first pair of legs for free, not that I'm complaining). Enjoying the expansion from the first game, there's tons more to do and so impressed at the depth here.

I've been waiting for this for a while. Simply put, it's bigger, better and all-around an upgrade to WW1 that doesn't actually require you playing it. The player now has a lot more to do, like visiting the city and interacting with the NPCs. I think it's fair to say anyone who enjoyed WW1 would be into this.
