Clear waves of enemies, shop strategically, scale like crazy. I don't need to explain how Brotato works, right? Instead of slugs, you fight rats. Instead of weapons, you place food on the skewers, upgrade it, improve your stats with items. Like Brotato, the game relies on a variety of characters with absurdly unique abilities, as well as escalating difficulty that would kick your ass and force you to theory-craft thoroughly. But not too anxiously, it's a cosy game. Brotato lovers shall feel at home here. That said, Skewer Squad can appeal to anyone, even a hater, doing enough differently to stand on its own. In place of arenas, you defend the grill in a tower defence fashion. You'll get to learn a whole new microcosm of food synergies here, the stat system is completely unique. Besides, having to operate 3 skewers separately makes for very involving gameplay, arguably more so than Brotato's. On lower difficulties, you could normally fill your skewers with food, then leave them in optimal positions and enjoy the satisfying pops, but later ones add elites to focus and shooters to evade. It never really becomes too much of a hassle, though, at least if your build is good, and while it took me quite a few attempts to conquer the last 2 difficulties, I was still chilling from beginning to end, having a distinctly different experience every run. Yeah, it's a solid roguelite at that. Could use a couple more bosses and elites, even more food, punchier sounds, but it made me happy as it is. It's a cute, clever game, and a bang for your buck. Save me from the cursed Noo Noo food killer. It's coming for me. Great game, I'm not currently held hostage by the creature (it watches as I type, it is unhappy)

A different kind of tower defense with rougelike elements. There's a lot of variety in terms of characters, foods and items/seasonings, no run is going to be like the other. It's fun doing different builds trying to get the right items to match with the foods. Although there's a lot of RNG involved, but it doesn't ruin the experience in my opinion. I really recommend it!

Silly and fun to play. Builds feel different from each other with a nice variety of bonuses/items

I refunded the game as it was not my cup of tea. Although I did like it and think it has potential. What I am personally missing: - lack of full controller support is my main issue (currently you move a cursor around with the controller which feels poorly optimised) - no roguelite elements in terms of upgrades outside of runs (you do unlock new grillmasters to choose from, but there is no skill tree or anything similar). For me personally this is a must for me to like roguelike games. I need a sense of progression. - the music tends to get annoying over time (I liked it at first and it fits the tone of the game perfectly though) What I liked: + art style is consistent and nice + the gameplay loop is fun + could be a perfect game for the steam deck (if it gets official support and better controller controls) or a mobile device + technically well optimized (I encountered no bugs or crashes) Verdict: You can feel the game has a soul and is fairly priced for what you get. But in the end it simply wasn't for me.
