Oh my goodness, this is the best game ever from the Katamari Damacy franchise, and far better than the original one—Katamari Damacy Reroll. I really had a great time with this game, and I almost cried too. It’s got playable cousins! Oh, how I spent my time playing as my favorite cousins, especially Nik, Lalala, Fujio, and Johnson. I also played as Drooby (she’s really helpful in the Bird and Elephant stage) and Can-Can (he won’t give up trying to light up the campfire in the Camper Man stage during the second and final round), because both of them were disliked so much in the voting poll results. I’m very grateful for them, though. What makes the gameplay really interactive is that there’s a camera mode where you can take photos or selfies (you can customize your expressions too!), including the cousins who were minding their own business before being rolled up, like when the Prince and Slip were messing around with a photocopier machine in the Mini-Sumo stage. The King of All Cosmos? Well, he’s got his own private stages if you interact with the electrifying bamboo sword. You’ll be playing as his younger version, and he’s really cute! (screams) The downside? Well, for each stage, you've to retry in order to roll up each cousin, as they won’t appear simultaneously. What are the most difficult stages? 1. The Camper Man 2. The Bird and Elephant (you've to roll up to 500 meters) 3. The Cowbear Farmer (you've to roll up Daisy, but at the same time, you've to avoid rolling up any cow-like or bear-like objects, because once you do, the stage will end) 4. The F1 Racer (the ball won’t slow down unless you roll up enough to make it heavy) All in all, this is the perfect game from the franchise because it’s not strict, making it suitable for anyone new to Katamari Damacy. 10/10
Katamari Damacy is a horror game from the perspective of the monster. Despite all the overworld NPCs comments about how much they love Katamari Damacy and want a Katamari of their own, in the levels themselves everything runs terrified from you and humans even let out screams of pain/terror when you get them. The game over screen emphasizes this as well; as The King drops all his affable fruitiness and just zaps your ass for failing your mission (legitimately caught me off guard when I ran into it my first time). The bright and colorful exterior of this world belies the dark truth that if you do not suck up to The King and appease his every whim, you will either be vaporized by lightning or melded together with everything from your cat, your car, and the elephant ferris wheel and turned into a parking garage planet. Uh I mean 10/10 haha quirky japanese game
Mid Katamari. Mixed Katamari. At it's current sale price of $10, if you've completed Katamari Damacy REROLL and are thinking about picking this up, I'd say go for it. That said, however, I also feel that this is currently the weakest game in the Katamari trilogy on Steam. Most other reviews are other a few sentences long, so let me spill some digital ink to put to text my gripes and complaints with this game. First and most importantly: The object culling is weirdly aggressive. You will regularly see objects reverse-fading into existence only a handful of katamari lengths in front of you. Neither Damacy nor Once Upon have this issue, so it is a bizarre flaw that noticeably detracts from the experience - it's a lot harder to optimize your route when you're effectively in a fog of war type situation. But also, the collectibles just aren't very satisfying in We Love . To gather a sticker, you need to stop rolling(!!!) then open a camera at the right distance from the sticker - without visual obstructions - and snap a photo. I think it's very telling that neither this mechanic, nor the (spoiler) Million Roses return in Once Upon . Well, the new mechanics though! Those are great, right? Eh... Your mileage may vary, of course, but I found them to be hit or miss. Weirdly, more than anything else, I appreciated the Lore of this game - which feels absolutely crazy to say. It just brings a lot more character to the characters, y'know? At the end of the day, it's more Katamari and more Katamari is good. But if you're high coming off Damacy and you're expecting this game to blow you away, I'd advise you dial back your expectations - likewise, if you end up bouncing off this game, don't let that deter you from trying Once Upon a Katamari ! I found the layouts, mechanics, and general aesthetic in that game to be far more dialed-in and refined than this middle (and middling) entry. I completed the achievements for We Love Katamari in about 14 hours; there's nothing for filling the collection encyclopedia, sticker sheet, or even the present box this time. So achivement-hounds will make quicker work of it - though obviously true completionists can get far more hours (with accompanying frustration) if they really try to maximize their accomplishments. Do I still recommend this game? For lack of a thumbs-middle, I can't help and go with thumbs-up. I don't regret my time with it, but I did enjoy the other games more. Tepidly recommended.
