This is a good, but not great game. I'd recommend it for a good mostly relaxing time, since the difficulty I found to be pretty easy. The riding feels really good. The world was fun to explore, I liked the themes of the different racing groups and the race courses themselves were varied enough to not get stale. However there are some negatives as well. The second "world" is where the game starts to lose it's charm. The roads in this world are littered with garbage scattered along the road where you need to ride. If you hit this garbage you get sent flying in a random direction, not a fun mechanic. Also the races in this world feature narrow pathways. which wouldn’t be a problem if it weren’t so easy for CPU racers to knock you off track with little you can do to prevent it. The tight passage ways make this problem even worse. Also some trophies are just not fun to achieve, for example needing to walk your bike 1km without mounting or fast traveling, which equates to what felt like 10 mins. For a game about riding a bike, that is not fun. Overall my cons are just that there are some design choices that are more frustrating than fun. Some quality of life/feature suggestions as well. - Bike Build Management: Saving multiple different bike builds a toggle between them. Often I just left my bike as it is when getting a new part because I didn't want to go through the menus to change it and then change it back, for forget how I had the build before. - Character customization: big part of cycling culture is also the types of clothes, (lycra, backpack, hi-viz), being able to customize the look of the character and have some perks attached to that would be cool. - Completion map: going through and finding all the collectables and Lone Wolf riders I felt were not worth it without some sort of map or guide. - The geared bikes were unlocked little too late. By the time I unlocked a geared drive chain I already found a good single speed build so the drawbacks of the gear shifting made it not worth it.

For the price, this is a pretty fun, relaxing little racing game. It has all the standard fare: secret jumps, collecting letters, beating specified times, and a variety of parts to choose from in order to create different builds. That's how I would describe this game in general: standard. There are a few things that hold it back for me. Firstly, the part selection isn't too great in terms of real build variety. Once you find a part that provides a pretty good bonus in a certain desired stat, there are few other parts that will ever compete with it or provide an acceptable trade-off, as only a handful of part types tend to provide stat bonuses across various stats. Also, geared drivetrains seem to serve no purpose. In service of keeping parity between fixed and geared drivetrains, it appears that geared drivetrains tend to offer an advantage only in the acceleration up to certain speeds, with MAJOR drawbacks given the game's tendency to instantly decelerate you if you even touch another racer. A geared drivetrain should not only offer better acceleration (with the drawback of timing gear changes correctly), but it should also offer greater top end speed when climbing or descending, depending on the part itself. Since these are tied to stats instead, and the stats are relatively equal among geared and fixed drivetrains, there is practically zero reason to choose a geared drivetrain. The grip system really saps the fun out of the game when it comes to how collisions are handled. When NPCs are instantly and constantly pulling out on you, the absolute disaster that a collision can cause you whilst the NPC gets away nearly scot-free will have you almost ignoring the stat entirely in favor of restarting at every setback. The cost of high grip builds is often too high to be worth the marginal reduction in annoyance at the collisions with other racers. What could have been a stat focused around giving you the choice between pulling off sick but costly drifts that allow even tighter turns or smooth but less dramatic turns feels like a missed opportunity at best, and a burden at worst. The devs tried to resolve this problem by making grip even MORE relevant in the second area of the game, but ultimately this just adds to the frustration. The second area features garbage ALL OVER the tracks. This could have been an interesting addition, but with its haphazard placement it feels like more of a burden. These items could have been skillfully placed in the way of valuable shortcuts that would allow the player an edge, forcing them to use precise control or bunny-hops to take advantage of the track design. Instead, they are strewn ALL OVER the track and many are so small that your character blocks your view of them. When you find yourself turned 90 or even 180 degrees and brought to a full stop by a cardboard box, the grip mechanic loses pretty much all its entertainment value. They couldn't even keep the garbage off the two boost ring freeways in the area, which are supposed to just be fun little ways to enter and exit the city. I almost never had a smooth run on them because some small piece of debris would send me careening into the 100 or so abandoned cars on the thing and halt all my progress. Ultimately, it wasn't enough to make me stop playing, but it did make me feel like the most enjoyable part of the game was the first region, and the pure enjoyment of Mt. Send was neither varied, long, or interesting enough to feel like a worthy payoff for the second region gauntlet.

A very fun and relaxing game with a beautiful cel-shaded art style. I really wish we had more cycling titles as enjoyable as this one.

At first, Wheel World felt like a dreamy, laid-back cousin to mainstream racing games - cruising through vibrant streets, customizing my bike, and losing myself in the game’s stunning art style and lovely soft synth pop soundtrack. But then came the second world, which is round about 80% into the game. The difficulty spiked so suddenly and so harshly that it felt like hitting a brick wall. The core gameplay loop of races never felt perfectly polished, but there it really got off rails. No matter how much I tried, the game stopped being fun because some other biker would suddenly make a 90° turn and push me into a wall etc. Eventually, I just had to call it quits. It’s a shame, because the world and vibe were so captivating—but the frustration just wasn’t worth it anymore. The first island, round about 80% of the game, is amazing and fun. The game is worth it for this alone, but not at full price - buy it on sale. I hope they'll release a big patch and / or develop a sequel, which fixes said problems.

This game makes you buy a bike I love riding around in this game's open world. The design is fun, smoking other riders is fun, the bikes are fun, bunny hopping over guardrails and down cliffs is fun. The feature of this game I enjoyed most, though, was the part where it made me miss riding bikes so much that I went on FB Marketplace and bought an old road bike for a couple hundred bucks. Now I'm fixing it up and riding all over in amazing fall weather.
