Wordplay is a good word search game crossed with a roguelike deck-builder. The graphics, music and sound effects are all well done. It is fun, if you like word puzzles, despite being mentally taxing. The main frustration is that to progress through the 14 levels of Legendry mode is a real marathon and the outcome is determined by the cards on offer. It is annoying to be defeated repeatedly due to a weak deck of cards that is not contributing enough to the points score. Obviously, that's how deck builders work, but in the case of Word Play, you are really putting in a lot of mental effort to lose to random chance. Inevitably, I will feel much better about it as soon as I get a lucky deck that helps me complete Legendry mode, but at this stage, my patience is getting stretched thin. Don't let this grumbling put you off getting Word Play. This review is a recommendation after all.

Played the demo - loved it - played the full game - loved it even more. I think the demo really will give you an idea if this game is for you, so my ultimate recommendation is play that first. I do want to say something that's going to sound negative but I think is important to consider. I enjoyed Balatro more, and when I thought about why, I realized it's because picking the best poker hand really isn't that hard. Balatro is a lot more about finding and picking synergies. This game can absolutely be about that - that is part of this game - but finding the right word to play is also part of it and that feels more involved (and sometimes for me more tedious) than picking the best poker hand. Now I don't think it's that surprising that I would prefer Balatro (which one of the biggest hits of the last few years), and I don't think it's a negative to say, "Picking a word can be a big and time-consuming part of this game" - I think there are some people who will love this game for that reason. I felt the game was slower than Balatro for that reason. I think appropriately the upgrades are done differently - maybe even de-emphasized slightly - to make room for the words. I like the pace of Balatro better, but not everyone will feel that way, and despite saying that, I'm more likely to pick up this game than Balatro (I found Balatro a little too addicting and burnt myself out), so I don't know. What is this review anyway? Play the demo - you'll know whether this is for you if you play the demo.

The game is a ton of fun and I would still recommend it a couple of quality of life changes would make it fantastic - can we please get save slots so we can have multiple games going at once - also you cannot currently sell or trash upgrades which is a massive problem when you fill up on upgrades and a far superior option is available after a round there is no way to even sacrifice to get it

It's not bad if you're into the base spelling gameplay. It never really feels satisfying in the way I want it to, though. The roguelike elements are more like minor alterations to the core gameplay, and they don't really synergize or pop off in big ways like you hope for with Balatro-like games like this. I want more, I want it to lean into crazy synergies and make me feel like I'm absolutely breaking the game, but it doesn't really bring you there in my experience.

Boggle-roguelite. Well designed. I'd love to see feature that let you review a past run and see what big scoring words I missed. That way you could improve and want to keep coming back to play.
