1XQ4$♘♛⅞ See that? That spells "EXQUISITE." Heck of a Scrabble word, that - the Q and the X of Spades are both worth quite a bit. Oh, plus my knight captured the white queen, so that's another 12 points. But oh shoot, I could've used a Joker instead of that dollar sign to give myself a flush! Welcome to Cursed Words, where Balatro meets Boggle. Things start innocently enough, the game tasking you with putting together words by connecting tiles in a grid. Each letter is worth a couple of points, and if you collect enough points over the course of 5 grids, you move on to the next level. Even when you start buying powerups in the shop, it's very straightforward: add a few blue tiles to the grid; blue tiles are worth more points; turn some of those blue tiles into ? wildcards. Easy! Then come the numbers. Then card suits. Negative tiles. Fractions. Chess pieces. Currency. Next thing you know, you're spelling T2⅓♜J?₩?9♦ and the game is saying that you submitted TOMAHAWKED for 5600 points. It makes no sense. But it makes so much sense at the same time. If you enjoy the "big numbers go brrr" combos of Balatro and want a fresh twist on the format, and maybe if you like feeling absolutely insane, look no further.
I spelled the word "QUIXOTICALLY" with a Q of Spades, a 3/4 fraction, a white rook taking a black bishop, a fire hydrant, a shiny number 6, a telescope, and 2 Xs. This game is like playing 4 or 5 different puzzles at once, on the same grid, occasionally discovering the English language contains words like JUVENESCENTLY and ZINCOCHROMITE, and feeling about 10x smarter than you probably are.
I cannot stress enough that this isn't just another *insert pre-existing game but its a roguelike bc balatro lol* game. I love how this game will throw an absurd concept at you and not give any tutorials or big hints regarding how it applies to the gameplay. Numbers? Chess? Yeah they make up letters in these words somehow, for sure dude. Deadass get this game if you enjoy having fun. And if you don't like this game, 12 1234 12345678 or something...
Yes, this is Boggle crossed with Scrabble, meets Balatro... at first. But as more stuff unlocks the gameplay gets wackier and wackier, and you're shifting back and forth between actually finding words, and just trying to string together as many combo tiles as your build will allow for. Half roguelite, half word finder, half puzzle game (and yes, that is 150%), there's a significant amount of rules and mechanics to juggle, not to mention the enormous amounts of modifiers you can unlock. And the game is rather fond of not spelling things out for you -- rumor has it there are still people out there who are trying to figure out how cards are supposed to work. And that one stamp that makes stickers with "red" in them cheaper? Yeah, that doesn't just do what you think it does. Roguelites being what they are, on the higher difficulties you do have to contend with RNG and accept that sometimes you have to roll with the punches and can't go for your intended build, but the game offers enough wacky fun times that it isn't even that much of a bother. With 37 hours under my belt and having beaten the boss (well... a boss, I would be completely unsurprised if there are others) I've unlocked a grand total of 23% of the game... so you're definitely getting your money's worth. There's a meaty demo that gives a good impression of what you can expect. Just don't get hooked and play it for too long, because as of writing there are still bugs with achievements that don't carry over.
