YAZD is a competent game with the potential of being great. But to get there, I feel YAZD needs some polish. In order from least to most difficult to implement, these are things I noticed in just a few hours of play: - Zoom the game out a tiny bit. - Give all weapons infinite ammo. Having to manage ammo for a weapon you already bought adds nothing fun to the game and makes progression through the nights feel sticky and clunky. - Add a visual for when you get hit. A sound effect is not enough in a game as noisy as this. - Add health bars to walls and autoturrets so you know when they're about to break. - Let me repair walls and autoturrets. - Add a simple way to select weapons. Like with a weapon wheel. - Let me move my character while throwing a grenade. - Add a wave length indicator like a progress bar at the top of the screen, or a light queue from the sun slowly rising. - Remove player turning speed so the odd "smoothness" of turning around goes away. It doesn't stop feeling weird even after several hours in-game. - Make the Zombie Defense gameplay direction clearer in the Defense mode by giving the Lightpost at the centre of the map an objective with limited health you have to defend, so you can't just lead enemies around in a giant conga. - Overhaul the UI so you can know your health and ammo while focusing on enemies. - Overhaul the shop menu so you don't accidentally start the next wave while still setting up defenses, and so you don't have to scroll through fifteen items to get from weapons to walls. - Simplify the very many weapons until they all have a clear niche. Maybe add a description to hint at each weapon's niche. - Revamp the current """""""""difficulty"""""""""" progression which causes enemies stats to inflate as nights go on. It's NOT fun when enemies go from dying in five shots on Night 1 to tanking several clips of pistol ammo to die at Night 10. To this end you may want to: - Add more than one enemy. - Add more than one music track. Replacing all music with ambiance would also be a good solution. - Make the game intuitive. Make it easier for more experienced players to not buy anything on earlier nights, and suggest for newer players to rely more on what you can buy in the moment. - Let me upgrade my weapons with cash. - Let me upgrade my character with cash. - Add more interesting upgrades, like adding an AoE fire residue to grenades, rather than just upping damage or range or simple stats like that. Think "talent tree" and not "JRPG stats". - Rework autoturrets so they start at $6 000 then get progressively stronger as you upgrade them with more cash. - Add a sprint you can do for a limited time so you don't instantly die if you make a small mistake. - Make the High Score system a SECONDARY focus by adding a few *unique Campaigns*. Think about how Bloons Tower Defence does it, but add more than one wave-order so it's not a case of "beat one, beat them all". - Make an AI that doesn't simply throw itself at barricades, but lets itself be funneled, so you can construct elaborate kill labyrinths. Add an indestructible kind of wall, floor traps, so on and so forth. - Rebrand the game to give it some confidence and character. Further I would suggest some creative changes: - A day and night cycle where waves dynamically appear at night, and day leaves you free to repair your defenses, and if there's time left, search the edges of the map for valuables. Or maybe a big piece of gold ore right under the lighthouse you can mine infinitely, which gives you money for every second you mine it. - Remove all pick-ups. I understand that's part of the game's twin-stick DNA, but I would much rather see the game focus on the base building and survival--which has far more potential--than running around and mindlessly picking up cash off the floor which really isn't gameplay in my mind. - Simplify the weapons to make the basic gameplay click. I would recommend replacing the starting pistol with a magnum with the same DPS, but which can can one-shot with a headshots. Then continue fun-ifying the base gameplay like this, say by removing the SMG since there's already an Assault Rifle, then add a melee attack or shove you can use by pressing the Space bar, and so on. In short: Now that I've played YAZD for a few hours I like it, but see no reason to play more of it. The game could be a smash hit of pure classic gameplay-first joy if it just had some basic campaigns, or even just set challenges of "Survive until Night 5", then "10", then "15", then "Survive until Nigh 10 on Expert" or whatever and so on. And it could be even better with friends! But sadly, YAZD falls a bit short. Still enjoyable, and worth a buck or two, but somewhat dissapointing. The developers have made a sequel of sorts, "Yet Another Zombie Survivors", which seems to lean in to the twin stick/vampire survivors genre, which I feel is the exact wrong direction for the potential in this game. Not that it's bad to try something different! But, if they ever make a YAZD 2, and it's a clear step up, I suspect me and many other players would jump on it.

Yet Another Zombie Defense offers exactly what it promises: another temporary distraction that ultimately reinforces the futility of resistance. Its technical simplicity and honest premise make it more authentic than games promising false empowerment. Play it not for entertainment but as a meditation on the liberation that comes with accepting inevitable defeat.

It's quite a competent exemplar of a genre mix of top down action with wave defense structures to help with the actual survival part of the equation and there's no debating that free is an excellent price that should ensure that anyone that finds that combination enticing will sooner or later give it an old college try or two.
