_ 🇬🇧 ~ Zueirama is an incredible retrospective of Brazilian meme culture from the last decade, and a couple of foreign ones too. Unfortunately, this makes the game quite pointless for anyone who isn't Brazilian, since the humor is the main focus. Judging this game as "dated" is honestly a big mistake, because that's precisely what makes it special! A lot of major memes from here like Serjão Berranteiro, Galo Cego, Pai de Família and Papaco make an appearance, but there are also some cameos of global memes like Doge, Trollface, Pepe the Frog, Naruto running in Area 51... It's silly. A special mention goes to the incredible boss fight against the legendary DJ André Marques, whoever came up with that is simply a genius. The game isn't just a pile of memes, of course. Zueirama aims to tell a story that linearly connects these memes across various levels. Honestly, they aren't very good, the level design is quite generic, and many of the levels have themes that seem to stray quite far from the game's idea of celebrating memes, such as forests, caves, and underwater levels, etc. I wouldn't say they're horrible, but they're certainly uninteresting and the weakest point of the game. On the other hand, the core gameplay is quite competent and responsive, Zoinho's moveset is really fun when it's not restricted to a gimmick level with some vehicle, those can be quite annoying, but I admire the developers' ambition with them. It's definitely a niche experience aimed to brazilians who were chronically online between 2013 and 2017, so it's hard to really recommend it to anyone that doesn't fit that description. Personally, I had a lot of fun playing alone and even ended up platinuming the game, since it was aimed at people like me.

Zueirama is an absurd and wildly unpredictable retro-style platformer that fully embraces internet meme culture, chaotic comedy, and old-school game design. Developed by Memes Games, the title feels like a bizarre collision between classic side-scrolling platformers and the nonstop randomness of online humor. Instead of trying to present a serious adventure or polished cinematic narrative, the game leans completely into parody and nonsense, creating an experience filled with exaggerated characters, ridiculous weapons, strange enemies, and constant references to Brazilian internet culture. The result is a game that feels messy, energetic, and strangely unforgettable all at once. The story is intentionally ridiculous from the very beginning. Players take control of Zoinho, a delivery biker pulled into an increasingly bizarre mission after his girlfriend is transformed into a mortadella sandwich by a strange villainous creature. From there, the game descends into complete madness involving aliens, giant monsters, political satire, meme references, and surreal situations that barely attempt to follow conventional logic. The narrative constantly shifts between parody and complete absurdity, but that unpredictable energy becomes one of the game’s defining qualities. It feels less like a carefully structured storyline and more like an internet meme compilation transformed into a retro platforming adventure. One of the game’s strongest qualities is its constant gameplay variety. While platforming serves as the main foundation, Zueirama refuses to stay within a single gameplay style for very long. Throughout the adventure, players drive motorcycles, fly through shooter sections, swim through underwater stages, control spaceships, and participate in numerous mini-games that constantly interrupt the normal platforming flow. This structure feels heavily inspired by older console games that introduced new mechanics purely to surprise players and prevent repetition. Even when certain ideas feel rough around the edges, the nonstop variety keeps the experience entertaining because players never know what ridiculous gameplay twist will appear next. The platforming itself is fairly simple but enjoyable. Movement is intentionally exaggerated and slightly chaotic, fitting the game’s overall comedic tone. Zoinho gradually unlocks increasingly absurd abilities inspired by internet memes and Brazilian humor, including attacks and movement techniques that become more ridiculous as the game progresses. Combat is not especially deep, but the game makes up for that lack of complexity through creativity and humor. Fighting enemies using bizarre weapons such as exploding pizzas, sandals, and noisy instruments perfectly matches the game’s commitment to absurdity. What truly separates Zueirama from most indie platformers is its incredibly strong cultural identity. The game is deeply rooted in Brazilian internet humor, local memes, slang, and social references. Nearly every level and character feels designed around specific cultural jokes and online trends. For Brazilian players, the game likely feels especially personal because very few titles embrace local internet culture this openly. International players may miss some references, but the chaotic comedic energy remains entertaining even without understanding every joke. The game’s personality is so strong that it often remains amusing simply because of how committed it is to complete nonsense. Visually, Zueirama embraces a colorful pixel-art style heavily inspired by retro platformers from the 16-bit era. Character animations are exaggerated and cartoonish, enemy designs constantly shift between parody and surreal comedy, and the backgrounds are packed with visual jokes and hidden references. The graphics are not technically advanced, but the sheer amount of personality in the art direction helps the game stand out immediately. Every environment feels intentionally overloaded with strange details and comedic distractions, encouraging players to constantly look around instead of focusing only on gameplay. The soundtrack deserves significant praise as well. The game combines retro-inspired music with influences from Brazilian funk, samba, electronic music, and pop culture references to create an energetic and memorable audio identity. Tracks constantly shift styles depending on the situation, helping reinforce the game’s unpredictable pacing. The soundtrack feels chaotic in the best possible way and perfectly supports the bizarre atmosphere of the adventure. Another admirable quality of Zueirama is how fearless it feels creatively. The game constantly introduces strange mechanics, unusual jokes, and random genre changes simply because it wants to entertain players through unpredictability. There is a clear sense that the developers prioritized personality and experimentation over strict consistency or polish. That passion gives the game an authenticity many indie platformers lack. However, the game is not without problems. Technical issues and rough mechanics occasionally interfere with the experience. Certain platforming sections suffer from awkward collision detection, inconsistent hitboxes, or imprecise controls that can become frustrating during more difficult segments. Some gameplay mechanics introduced later in the adventure also feel underdeveloped compared to the stronger core platforming sections. Boss fights can become repetitive as well. Many encounters rely on waiting for attack patterns to finish before dealing damage, which occasionally slows the pacing. Certain genre-shifting sections, particularly vehicle stages or shooter sequences, also feel less polished than the main platforming mechanics. The heavy reliance on meme humor may also divide players. Since internet culture changes rapidly, some jokes already feel dated compared to when the game originally launched. Players unfamiliar with Brazilian memes and local online culture may miss portions of the humor entirely. While the chaotic energy remains entertaining regardless, the comedic impact varies depending on the player’s familiarity with the references. Despite these flaws, Zueirama succeeds because of its overwhelming creativity and personality. The game never feels generic or emotionally distant. Every stage, mechanic, and joke feels driven by a genuine desire to create something bizarre and memorable rather than safe or commercially polished. It captures the spirit of experimental retro platformers where developers constantly introduced strange ideas simply to surprise players. For fans of retro platformers, internet humor, absurd comedy, and experimental indie games filled with nonstop variety, Zueirama offers a genuinely unique experience unlike almost anything else on Steam. While its rough mechanics and chaotic style may not appeal to everyone, its creativity, cultural identity, and fearless commitment to absurdity make it an unforgettable indie adventure. Rating: 8/10
