This visual novel is a masterpiece. Its characters go on an interesting and captivating journey through another world, and this journey is beautifully presented with some very original worldbuilding. But as great as all that stuff is, I think it's the visual novels' character writing, and it's focus on motherhood, that make it a unique and emotional experience. This visual novel uses this isekai adventure to tell a very relatable, story about familial love and loss, and it does it in a realistic way. The message here is that being family comes with lots of difficulties and ups and downs, but when you are lucky enough to have a good family, it's a wonderful, beautiful thing. This is the kind of visual novel that will you get you to thinking about your own family, and how you might be able to do better. Not only do the game's main characters help drive this point home, but so too do all the different characters you'll meet along the way. It is very much a nakige ("crying game"). It made me cry more than any other that I've ever read, and I've read all of the most famous tearjeaker VNs with western releases, so that's saying something. And those tears are very well-earned. Any time I hear the game's eponymous lullaby for the rest of my life, I imagine it will bring me to bittersweet tears. I can't recommend it enough.

I don't usually play kinetic novels. I prefer visual novels. The difference is that a visual novel has different routes or endings based on your choices, but a kinetic novel has no interaction from the player at all. You're just reading or watching or listening. I feel I would enjoy these games more if I spoke Japanese then it would be like watching an anime. As it is now, the 50+ hours of reading and not interacting whatsoever well it tends to put me to sleep, literally lol. But that said, it was a slow burn, but I did it, I liked this story enough to beat it to completion. Stick around after the credits for the true end scene which is a bit dark and messed up but ok lol so is like 80% of this game. Which is probably what makes it interesting. I cried a few times. Also if looking for how long the game is, it's 15 chapters. The final chapter will say final. Then watch the credits and you'll have a brief maybe 5 minute scene at the end. I had set the text to auto at a rate that felt natural to my reading speed. I did maybe pause it a few times here or there, still I think for those reading every single word such as myself you're looking at 40+ hours. If you skim and skip, maybe less. Parts of it felt a bit dragged out but none the less overall would still recommend.

Tl;dr You like Anime movies, you’ll like this. You like familial themes, you’ll like this. Don’t like either; there’s at least a decent change you’ll still like this. It’s that good. It’s about our protagonist, her (same aged) mother from the past, her (same aged) daughter from the future and her (unborn) brother as they travel a land of gods to perform a ritual to return the ruling god to the land for the sake of the next generation. Unsurprisingly it’s about family and the relationship between parent and child. It’s about the ups and downs, about how blood relations don’t always result in love but also how a mother’s love can be utterly fierce and unrelentingly beautiful. In form it reminds me most of Adabana Odd Tales, another Aniplex VN about a journey through lands representing a season. It’s classic Hero’s journey stuff really, the call to adventure, challenges, a grand crisis and a return. The feeling of a journey something noticeable in the art to; while the CGs aren’t anything special, there are a substantial amount of pretty backgrounds to emphasises the group passing through so many locations on their quest. In contrast to other Hero’s journey stories there’s actually not much combat. Rather it’s a journey mostly about understanding others and diplomacy. Not that it’s necessarily peaceful either. It does start comparatively cosy and simple but gets more complex and ambiguous and it’s truly a trial by the end. In essence it feels like the anime movies I’ve watched, with “Mirai” being the most obvious comparison considering they both share the time-travelling family premise . Probably because it feels a lot like an anime; that’s not a knock on it, more of a neutral statement. The flatter, less glossy art style resembles the style used for VN spinoffs of anime (or anime itself). The entire theme of family (and especially motherhood which is barely a thing in VNs) and the journey element of the plot feels more like an anime. There’s also a certain aspect that I can’t put my finger on that makes it feel more like an anime movie. Perhaps having less of an internal monologue than a normal VN while still being contemplative . Perhaps it’s also how it uses a fantastical conceit to tell a thoroughly mundane message in a manner that it couldn’t otherwise be portrayed. The time travel is literally “A god did it” so it’s not like the mechanic itself is examined but it allows scenes like Yoko and Tsumigi clashing over cultures as equals despite being 2 generations apart and Misuzu carefully considering what it means to be a mother before the process of becoming one. The friendship and bonds between the four main characters is already heartwarming in itself but it’s the added dimension that they’re both family and not that adds an extra dimension to it. The last quarter in particular is amazing. It really nails that feeling of resisting even if it feels like it’s futile and persisting against an overwhelming force; well that’s the mark of a well done Hero’s journey I suppose. The ending is just so powerful and emotional in a way I haven’t seen in a very long time. The closest I could think to it is the ending of “Your Name”. It’s not the similarity in plot but it inspires the same emotion. I really liked it. It doesn’t necessarily do anything I haven’t seen in the anime movie space even if it is novel in the VN space. Still, it’s nice seeing that sort of thing here (and the ~10 hour runtime lets it breathe a bit better compared to a 2 hour film) and the execution is superb .

If everything good about a Ghibli movie were extracted and made into a VN game, this'd be it.

Deep emotional story. I can feel the character relationship. I can see why, tears run through my eyes. Please try it, give it chance. It's been a long time since I read a story this emotional. I miss my family
