Sept. 2025
Revue Starlight El Dorado is a beautifully crafted visual novel developed by Frontwing and published by Bushiroad Inc., offering a rich narrative experience that draws players deep into the world of Seisho Music Academy. Set against the backdrop of the 99th class preparing for their final summer performance of the acclaimed play "El Dorado," the game explores themes of ambition, friendship, and rivalry through a theatrical lens. Players are given the unique opportunity to experience the story from the perspective of one of two protagonists—Salvatore Guglie, whose lineage ties him to a disgraced admiral, or Alejandro Javier Cavallero Cruz, heir to a Spanish aristocratic family. This choice influences the direction of the narrative, providing varied insights into the complex dynamics of the characters and their motivations. The gameplay itself stays true to the visual novel format, emphasizing story immersion through text-driven dialogue and expressive character interactions. The interface is user-friendly, with features like auto mode, customizable volume controls, and a backlog function that allows players to revisit previous conversations, enhancing the reading experience. Additionally, the inclusion of a gallery mode enables players to admire the game's detailed artwork and revisit its evocative soundtrack, which plays a significant role in setting the emotional tone throughout the journey. Visually, Revue Starlight El Dorado excels with its elegant art style and fluid animations that bring the characters and theatrical performances to life. The attention to detail in character expressions and stage design helps create a cinematic feel, making the story’s dramatic moments more impactful. Complementing the visuals is a carefully composed soundtrack that underscores the game’s emotional beats, heightening the tension and intimacy of key scenes. However, some players have noted occasional audio inconsistencies, such as abrupt sound effects or compression issues, which can momentarily distract from the otherwise polished presentation. Narratively, the game delves into the psychological and emotional growth of its characters, balancing lighthearted camaraderie with intense personal struggles. The layered storytelling, enriched by strong voice acting and evocative writing, invites players to engage deeply with the themes of legacy, determination, and the sacrifices made in pursuit of artistic perfection. The branching story paths stemming from the protagonist choice add replayability and encourage exploration of different character arcs, making each playthrough feel fresh and rewarding. In summary, Revue Starlight El Dorado is a compelling addition to the visual novel genre that successfully combines theatrical storytelling with interactive gameplay. Its well-crafted narrative, captivating art, and immersive soundtrack offer a memorable experience for both fans of the Revue Starlight series and newcomers alike. While minor audio glitches may occasionally surface, they do little to diminish the overall quality and emotional impact of the game. This title stands as a testament to the power of storytelling through the fusion of performance and interactive media. Rating: 9/10

its very sad that revue starlight el dorado doesnt tackle the central irony which is that the characters in the play are chasing after el dorado, yknow the fictional city european settlers foolishly searched for, and could never find because it doesn't exist. especially because i got to stew on it on each repeated scene through the routes the fact that they are textually searching for something that doesn't exist as their motivator could have been played up a lot more. im obviously not surprised they didn't handle the matter of having cristopher columbus as a character delicately (and the lack of self awareness clearly means my hopes and dreams would never be satisfied here). definitely felt like a letdown, even if i didnt expect that it would be able to match the peak that is the movie... they did start to pivot away from the whole "we have to be constantly revolutionising the self and working ourselves to death" message towards the end but very much not satisfied. perhaps i should have seen the writing on the wall from the ending of the anime... still a hearty recommend to anyone looking for more food of their faves (and i would be remiss to omit that i did tear up at the ending hehe) but it feels like they could have done better. i think that revstar is at its best when they're playing up the magical realism elements and the fact is they only really do it in a handful of scenes here and it feels very half-hearted in that the story very quickly goes from submerging itself in the Revues and rising again to 'reality.' it makes sense when you consider that the main conceit is seeing how the interpersonal dynamics work out when different girls take the lead roles, but it means we don't get bespoke Revues written for specific character dynamics. i am still glad we got to explore these new character dynamics, and if they had just given us one route with the casting in the trailer it's very possible it would have just felt like a run-back of the anime series' plot, but it just feels a little sad.

As a long-time Revue Starlight fan and a former starira slave (rest in piss, you will not be missed [*] ), El Dorado was definitely the release I've been waiting for the most this year, and boy, oh boy, did it deliver The VN can be split into two distinct segments - the titular El Dorado , which is an in-universe theatrical play put on by the main characters; and the backstage/rehearsal part where we witness their personal lives and interactions. In terms of interactivity, Revue Starlight El Dorado is a visual novel you read, rather than play. The game offers only a single choice at the beginning: which two of the eight main characters will take the lead roles in the El Dorado play. This determines the route, which then plays out uninterrupted by any other choice until the end credits. Finishing the game unlocks a sort of "sandbox" mode, which allows you to play the entirety of the El Dorado performance with custom casting, completely separated from the predefined routes, with voiceovers, CGs, and songs adapting to your casting choices While the story of El Dorado itself is self-contained and doesn't require much context to follow, the actual Revue Starlight part might be a little trickier. The game takes place directly after the Revue Starlight anime and movie, and assumes the player is at least somewhat familiar with the overall plot. Old fans who should already know the main cast very well should have no problem following the story, but parts might get a little confusing for new players trying out the game for the first time. Overall, the game is great, but definitely not for everyone. If you are already a RevStar fan I think it's a must-play (I mean what else do we have at this point). If you are a new, potential fan and think you might be interested, I still highly recommend it, maybe wait for a sale if you feel like the short length and lack of story branching aren't worth the price tag.
