If you went on Miniclip as a kid to play games in the mid 2000's, you'll remember this game. 3 'classic' games for $5.00 isn't too bad at all.

As an aficionado of classic flash games who also grew up with them, I was absolutely thrilled when Commando 2 made its successful transition to Steam as part of the Commando Collection. The series has always offered an exciting side-scrolling shooter to those of us unable at the time to access more resource intensive games- and now it’s even more exciting and polished. The fundamental Metal-Slug inspired game-play is still as entertaining as ever, with fast-paced shooting, strategic moments, and plenty of action. The Commando Collection improves on this experience by providing smoother controls and graphics. Bonus content, fresh objectives, and updated achievements provide additional reasons to keep playing. The extra sprites maintain the fun originality of the Metal-Slug inspired designs and depth of the original blending seamlessly into the base game. I'd have loved the inclusion of Commando 1 but I can imagine the source files for this may be lost and operated, from memory, substantially differently to it's successor. A letter to the developers:

My childhood in one collection, this collection has Commando 2, 3, and Assault, games that filled my childhood back when flash was still a thing, and the fact i can play them without the use of an emulator or some shady website is a good thing, one thing im glad this collection changed however is the absurd difficulty in Commando 2 on harder levels, that was a breath of fresh air to finally be able to conquer them after years of trying before flash ceased to exist. Also the game runs excellently on the Steam Deck, so really, what more could there be asked for?

I played the first one on the internet on Miniclip.com and couldn't beat it because of the instant deaths in the game. I'm just gonna talk about the ones in this collection since you can't the first game here so I'll do them one by one. Commando 2: In this one, there are 4 levels you go through in each level fighting enemies like Japanese soldiers, and Germans along with planes, tanks, etc in a WW2 setting. Every time you beat a level you get new weapons to try out in the level. You get pistols, rifles, shotguns, rockets, and special weapons to use when you do harder levels. Some bosses were hard because I died from unfair moments when you get too close to them. After getting to the last level it gets easy because you get the best weapons in the game making you overpowered. You can choose the female which I think you get different weapons but I'm not sure. The music in this one is pretty good the only song I remember is the song used for the first mission. You get pickups like you get in Metal Slug but you get health in the game but when you get hit when your health is regenerating it will stop it. I give this game a 9 out of 10. Commando X Allied Assault: This game is more of a tactical defense game where you have to destroy enemy turrets, enemies, and the base from each level to defeat the level to get to the next one. Everytime you kill an enemy you get money to use on troops, and get EXP to level up. You get new weapons for beating enemies and health from certain enemies. When you die you lose money and a life. There's like a few levels that we're so hard to a point that I had to use cheats from the game to beat it because they felt unfair for me. I give this game a 7 out of 10. Commando 3: This one is like the first game but you can get multiple weapons in the level. There are different weapons from weapon classes you can use depending on the two characters you use. The levels are the same but with more enemies and it's harder. No new weapons it's the same thing but harder. There are like 6 levels you can do. Same enemies from the first game and you fight bosses in the end of the level. Some bosses have phases of health but their health get's lower everytime you get to a threshold. I had a problem where I played as the male character on level 5 and I couldn't progress so I switched to the female to progress but that's the only problem I have with the game. I give this game a 8 out of 10. I give this whole series a 8 out of 10. Would be a 9 out of 10 If they included the original game. I recommend getting this game since the price is fair or when you get it on sale. I hope this review makes you think twice about getting this game. Have a good day.

A cheap price to pay to relive the Miniclip days. In all seriousness it's just kind of a poor man's Metal Slug, but it's a fun enough time. Paying for this feels like giving a little back after the hours spent playing this on Miniclip. There's plenty of settings that let you tweak the difficulty too, so if you want to relive that authentic ball-disintegrating experience, you can mess around with those.
