TouHou Makuka Sai ~ Fantastic Danmaku Festival is a fan-made bullet-hell shooter developed by 東方幕華祭制作组 and published by 東方幕華祭制作组 alongside Starship Studio, and it stands as a passionate tribute to the long-running Touhou danmaku tradition. Rather than attempting to reinvent the genre, the game focuses on faithfully capturing the rhythm, intensity, and visual spectacle that define classic Touhou shooters, while layering in its own original ideas, characters, and presentation. From the opening moments, it is clear that this is a project built by fans who deeply understand why bullet hell resonates so strongly with its audience. The core gameplay adheres closely to traditional danmaku design, emphasizing precise movement, pattern recognition, and steady nerves under pressure. Players weave through dense curtains of bullets, learning enemy behaviors and boss spell cards through repetition and observation. Difficulty scaling is handled with care: lower settings allow newcomers to acclimate to the genre’s demands, while higher difficulties dramatically increase bullet density, speed, and pattern complexity, demanding near-perfect execution. This structure makes the game approachable without diluting the challenge that long-time danmaku players crave, striking a balance that many fangames struggle to achieve. Stage design is one of Makuka Sai’s strongest elements. Each level feels carefully choreographed, with enemy placements and bullet patterns flowing in rhythm with the soundtrack. Familiar Touhou locations and motifs are reinterpreted through fresh visual effects and new attack arrangements, ensuring that even veteran players are constantly engaged. Boss encounters are especially memorable, featuring elaborate spell cards that combine aesthetic flair with mechanical challenge. These fights often feel like climactic performances rather than simple obstacles, reinforcing the genre’s emphasis on spectacle as much as survival. Visually, the game leans heavily into vibrant colors, elaborate effects, and layered backgrounds that create a sense of constant motion. Bullet patterns are colorful and expressive, forming intricate shapes that are visually impressive even when they are threatening to overwhelm the player. Importantly, most patterns remain readable despite their density, allowing skilled players to identify safe paths through chaos. That said, on higher difficulties the sheer volume of effects can occasionally blur clarity, making the screen feel crowded and demanding intense focus to distinguish hazards from background elements. Audio presentation plays a major role in elevating the experience. The soundtrack, composed of energetic original tracks and remixes, complements the pacing of each stage and boss fight, reinforcing tension during climactic moments and driving momentum during standard enemy waves. Music and gameplay are tightly synchronized, giving stages a sense of rhythm that encourages players to internalize patterns and flow naturally through encounters. Sound effects are crisp and responsive, providing subtle feedback that helps players maintain situational awareness amid visual overload. Narrative elements are intentionally light, serving primarily as thematic framing rather than a focal point. As with many danmaku shooters, the story exists to contextualize stages and boss battles, presenting a loose incident that unfolds as players progress. Original characters and reinterpretations of familiar Touhou figures add flavor without distracting from the action, ensuring that the game remains focused on its mechanical strengths. For fans invested in Touhou lore, these touches provide additional enjoyment, but they are never mandatory to appreciate the experience. As part of the broader Fantastic Danmaku Festival series, Makuka Sai benefits from an iterative design philosophy that improves polish and presentation over time. Later entries refine visual clarity, expand stage variety, and introduce more ambitious bullet patterns, reflecting a development team that actively responds to player feedback. This ongoing refinement has helped the series build a strong reputation within the Touhou fangame community, often being recommended alongside the most respected unofficial danmaku titles available on Steam. Community reception reflects this strength. Players consistently praise the game’s visual style, satisfying difficulty curve, and faithful adherence to classic bullet-hell design. While occasional criticism surfaces regarding visual density or minor localization issues, these concerns rarely overshadow the overall enjoyment. Instead, the game is often cited as an excellent entry point for players curious about Touhou-style shooters, as well as a rewarding challenge for veterans seeking polished, modern fangames. Ultimately, TouHou Makuka Sai ~ Fantastic Danmaku Festival succeeds because it understands exactly what it wants to be. It is not an experimental reinterpretation of danmaku, nor a casual reinterpretation aimed at broad accessibility. Instead, it is a focused, energetic celebration of bullet-hell fundamentals, delivered with care, style, and respect for its source inspiration. For fans of Touhou shooters and players who appreciate demanding, pattern-driven gameplay wrapped in striking audiovisual presentation, it offers a compelling and memorable danmaku experience that stands proudly among the best fan-made entries in the genre. An enjoyable Touhou fangame, the only thing that's bad is the low quality English localization, but other that that it's a really good game.

a Touhou fangame that rewrites the story of EoSD. Difficulty-wise, it feels like len'en: you get lots of lives (len'en 1 has light mode, that allows to start game with max lives) and ways to cheese patterns, but at the same time, these patterns are dense, and i mean, really dense. for example, Nix, the stage 1 boss, has a spell card, the pattern of which has openings that constantly disappear, as well as pushes player to bottom of screen. and Daiyousei from stage 2 actually tries to push player back too instead of letting herself get shotgunned by Marisa like it happened in EoSD. Art style reminds me of Alphes works, and honestly it's quite nice, i like it. Soundtrack is... amazing. Let me just include 3 themes i enjoyed listening to: https://youtu.be/gqdBoAcHElU?si=m1fJFUHT3EnTjDF2 https://youtu.be/mDcQ2wzpDjc?si=gOJmXLy0lt152kkT https://youtu.be/T8NieecdiyI?si=YNS2sQ2s1iYh9KRO English translation sucks, but if being honest... broken English gives this game it's charm, just like those old 2hus from doujinstyle that use old static English patch, dialogues in which sometimes just don't make sense (like, Reimu threatening to tear Reisen's clothes off in th08) Mechanics wise, as i understood, capturing boss attack/killing specific enemies gives you spell/life fragment, and you need 1 spell fragment/5 life fragments to get extra resource. as a note, just like in subterranean autism, bombing is allowed to meet the requirement for getting life fragment after clearing boss pattern. Overall, it's an enjoyable game that i would recommend to any touhou fan, despite some issues it has.
