When simping goes wrong lol Score: 8/10 If you're a touhou fan, highly recommend If you want a feel-good story, this game is not for you Spoiler Review: “I thought I was seeing the character. Now I’m seeing the person underneath.” That shift is inherently compelling. This game raises more of a philosophical question than just a simple story—maybe even a moral warning—about how love can consume you when it becomes too absolute. It touches on ideas like what happens after death and the tragedy of cutting your life short instead of continuing to live with that loss. Overall, it’s a bittersweet but genuinely powerful story. I don’t usually enjoy visual novels or retro RPG-style games, but this one really grabbed me. A big part of that was the mystery and the soundtrack. I avoided spoilers and even though, thematically, the arc might feel familiar if you’ve seen similar “tragic romance” narratives, the way it played out was still fresh. As a newcomer, it was a unique experience. I also think it’s really strong for hardcore Touhou fans because it adds a whole new emotional depth to these characters I grew up with. Normally, they’re just these bold, funny girls battling monsters, but here, they’re placed into grounded, human situations. That contrast, taking these larger-than-life characters and showing their fragility adds a new layer. It made them feel more real, like they had a life beyond their battles. And that’s what made it so fascinating as a Touhou fan seeing them respond to serious things like real people. At the same time, I kept asking myself what the moral of the story was supposed to be. The ending, especially, really hit me. One character chooses to follow the other into death, and while it’s emotionally powerful, it left me uneasy. I kept thinking: you still have so much time left, why throw it all away? What about all the experiences you still could have had? That’s why, even though it was bittersweet and beautiful, I didn’t fully enjoy it in a traditional sense. I respected the emotional impact, but I disagreed with the final choice. The game makes you feel loss before you even have a chance to process it, and I think that’s why it lingers in my head. Ultimately, it’s a story that feels more like an experience of grief, rather than a lesson about how to handle it, but that’s probably why it stayed with me. Overall: I didn’t fully agree with where it ended, but I felt it deeply, and it made me think about it long after.

A short, simple, sweet RPG-style game focused around Reimu and Marisa. Around an hour and half worth of experience, that I, honestly, can't describe the pain and sadness I underwent. I love Reimu. I love Marisa. I love their cutesy, intimate interactions they had. This got me into the feels man T^T

神社的百合香 ~ Floral Aroma in the Shrine, developed and published by 凝冰剑斩, is a short but emotionally resonant visual novel that draws heavily from the Touhou Project universe while carving out its own intimate, character-driven narrative. Rather than focusing on bullet-hell action or large-scale supernatural conflicts that define much of Touhou’s gameplay legacy, this title shifts toward quiet introspection and romantic storytelling. It presents a deeply personal tale centered on the relationship between Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame, exploring affection, memory, and the fragility of emotional bonds within the familiar setting of the Hakurei Shrine. The story unfolds primarily from Marisa’s perspective, allowing players to step into her internal world as she reflects on her connection to Reimu. The narrative is linear, structured into a series of chapters without branching choices or alternate endings. This deliberate structure keeps the focus tightly on the emotional arc rather than player-driven outcomes. As a result, the experience feels more like a novella than a traditional interactive visual novel. The lack of multiple routes may limit replay value, but it strengthens narrative cohesion and ensures that the emotional pacing remains intact from beginning to end. At its core, Floral Aroma in the Shrine is a romance story infused with melancholy. The dialogue and monologues often lean into reflective and bittersweet tones, touching on themes of longing, devotion, and inevitable separation. The interactions between Reimu and Marisa feel tender yet tinged with vulnerability. The game does not rush its emotional beats; instead, it allows conversations and quiet moments to breathe. This slower pacing reinforces the contemplative atmosphere and invites players to sit with the characters’ emotions rather than merely observe them. Visually, the game adopts a modest RPG Maker-inspired presentation. Character portraits and background art are relatively simple, but they effectively convey expression and mood. The shrine setting serves as a symbolic anchor for the narrative—a place of familiarity and spiritual resonance that contrasts with the emotional uncertainty explored in the story. While the artwork may not rival larger-budget visual novels, it complements the narrative’s tone and maintains immersion through consistent aesthetic direction. Sound design plays a subtle but important role in enhancing the atmosphere. Background music is used sparingly, often favoring gentle, melancholic tracks that underscore the emotional weight of key scenes. Ambient silence is occasionally allowed to linger, amplifying the impact of dialogue and introspective moments. The restraint in audio presentation mirrors the narrative’s quiet focus, avoiding dramatic crescendos in favor of understated poignancy. As a Touhou fan game, Floral Aroma in the Shrine benefits from the existing lore and character familiarity of the franchise. Fans of the series will immediately recognize the personalities and dynamic between Reimu and Marisa, but the story does not rely entirely on prior knowledge. Instead, it presents their relationship in a way that feels accessible while still rewarding those familiar with Touhou’s broader context. The game’s thematic focus on romance and emotional depth aligns with the long-standing fan culture surrounding the series, particularly within its yuri interpretations. The most striking element of the experience is its emotional conclusion. Without delving into spoilers, the ending carries significant weight and leaves a lingering impression. The narrative does not shy away from sorrow or ambiguity, and it embraces a tone that may be interpreted as tragic or bittersweet. This willingness to commit to an emotionally challenging resolution distinguishes it from lighter, purely comforting romance stories. Ultimately, 神社的百合香 ~ Floral Aroma in the Shrine stands as a compact yet heartfelt visual novel that prioritizes emotional storytelling over gameplay complexity. Its linear structure, reflective pacing, and focus on character intimacy create an experience that feels personal and sincere. While its short runtime and minimal mechanics limit its scope, the strength of its writing and atmosphere allow it to resonate beyond its modest presentation. For fans of Touhou or players drawn to romantic visual novels with a melancholic edge, it offers a touching and memorable journey through love, memory, and the quiet spaces between them. Rating: 9/10

Short little rpgm yuri game, I'm giving a thumbs-up because I didn't exactly dislike the game, but I'd have chosen "mixed" if it were an option. You play as Marisa and must help sick Reimu recover. The story is mostly cute and melancholic, but it felt like it was trying wayyy to hard towards the end and it was kinda rushed. The map designs are kinda meh at times but it's overlookable. I absolutely loved the music placement and choices. Well, that's it. If you like ReiMari you can check it out, it's pretty short. Just know that it's nothing crazy. P.S, The English translation is really questionable at times.
