Quite the hidden gem this game is. Its very addicting once you get into it, I will admit it took me some time to get involved due to other games but once I gave it a full chance it won me over. Lots of quality things in it from the art styles to land battles. Pros: - Amazing art styles - Very optimized - Sail around the world - Treasure, shipwrecks to exploring new areas - Crafting system, want a new boat? Craft a random one with random mats - Land exploration - Find new heroes all over and level them up, equip them how you want aswell - Very addicting - Upgrade the ports you want, where you want - Combat is fun once you get the hang of it - Lots more Cons: - Can't create your own charc/mercs This game is worth full price, but if not consider getting it on-sale, I have not gotten the DLC as of yet, as I would like to fully beat the base game before trying that on a new campaign. There is lots of playable starts around the world, I do wish you could create your own and pick where you want to start, would be awesome but I understand. Try it out, refund if not your style. 8.5/10

Sid Meiers Pirates! meets JRPG, instead of just sailing the Carribbean during the golden age of piracy. You sail the world during the age of exploration with a group of distinct characters all with different ambitions, crew and skills. Throw a little more world building into the mix , instead of sailing to a far flung monastery and moving population around or overthrowing a governor , you start a guild and invest in the port of your choice. The more you invest, the bigger the port becomes, better ships can be built, a more efficient trade network can be established, and the better the profit is. There are missions galore too, it's not as open ended as Sid Meiers Pirates. You can just go out and explore the map, however you are restricted by supply, knowledge of ports and the real kicker, age of your ship. Yes, unlike Pirates! your ship ages with every passing day, lowering hull points and quality of sailing. Nautical charts can be obtained to help with the unknown, and you can build better ships if you obtain the right parts and blueprints, this also goes hand in hand with the port building mechanic of the guild. Crew is also an important part of staying afloat, slots can be filled on your ship to boost certain stats or provide bonuses. Not to mention to help repel boarders. The control scheme is a bit of a challenge to master, combat is almost identical to Pirates. The some negatives I have is the pitfall of all RPGs from the east, too much "hit enter to pass to the next dialogue bubble." , some really long periods of just watching your ship sail from one point to the other or nowhere at all, just in the middle of the ocean. But trust me, the other aspects of the game outweighs these negatives, tenfold. There's so much more to share, but I'd spoil the game, wishlist or purchase. I promise you'll like this hidden gem. If JRPG's , world building, and sailing sims are your thing, then this is the game for you !

I am a terrible merchant captain but I am having a lot of fun! If you are ancient like me and can remember Pirates! this game has a lot of that flavor but also character stories, sort of stat raiser/rpg style. The art is charming. The translation is... not perfect but honestly I think it adds to the charm personally. A definite worthy buy.

A light, causal sailing/trading/cannon-firing game, with anime-style protagonists and story elements that give the play-through some direction, but has longevity through light story-telling, quests, rpg character building, and exploration. There are four characters to choose a game with, each of with has their own starting location and story. I have only completed the Portuguese play-through. It has been very exploration focused, having me map the four corners or Africa, find hidden European artifacts, and explore my way to India and then the globe. And, let me tell you, I actually felt like an explorer! The game has a bit of that 'Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego' education to it, but never over-bearing. But, I do feel like I am learning things as I play. The game takes parts of 'Port Royale' and some concepts of 'Sid Meier's Pirates,' but really developed an identity of its own. It's a long game. It seems to have good pacing, as I was really confused by market systems and had a hard time fighting easy pirates to level up for about 10 hours, but then the systems all kind of clicked, which was a revelation in some of today's hand-holding game styles. This is one of the few games wherein I actually enjoyed mastering systems on my own, rather than use a wiki. My chief complaint is sea battles. They take place on the world map and cannot be escaped, but are easily avoided. They only occur in certain, small zones (which are indicated, or during quests), and can be confined, which can lead the player into extremely annoying shorelines and sand banks. I really wish tank-controls were available for battles, as I had a hard time playing them. But, avoiding hard battles, save-scumming and over-powering enemies totally works. Save-scumming really saved me, but I'm not much of an action game player. Recommend? If you like 'Port Royale" and "Sid Meier's Pirates," you probably will like the game, but it is based on aspects of both of those games and is not a clone in any way. You'll need to have tolerance for happy-go-lucky anime style protagonists and a story mixed into your game. What you end up with is a world-sized (can-take hours to traverse) game, rooted in the imagination of exploration, both expanded upon and constrained by anime-herotype morality, that let's you explore, trade, do some cool RPG level-up stuff, and have some lackluster battles. Overall, I really like it, but can tell it only has so much replay value.

I've been looking around for a game that's similar to Sid Meier's Pirates- either the 2004 3D version, or the older NES version. It's a niche that seems to be impossible for developers to fully replicate. There's an avalanche of "Unity Asset" SM: Pirates clones on Steam, and all of them are half-baked slop. This game is much more of an Uncharted Waters game than a Sid Meier's Pirates game, but it's close enough for me. It has the real-time ship combat of Sid Meier's Pirates (a bit more simplistic than that, but it's close), with the relationship aspect of Uncharted Waters, and the economy of something like Tradewinds (if anyone remembers that series. Lol). I appreciate the option to choose between several protagonists instead of being locked-in to playing one. I went with Abdulluh to start- seemed like a cool arabic "Sinbad" style pirate. Translation is hit-or-miss, but I never found it confusing. Only found some of the grammar and sentence-structure odd. The character designs are really cool. Chinese anime style isn't something that I can always appreciate, but here in this context I feel like they did an excellent job. All of the characters that I've seen so far are brimming with personality, in spite of the strangely-translated dialogue. The music (at least for the character that I'm currently playing) is awesome. Very twangy Arabic themes that really immerse you in whatever area you're in. I'd imagine that it changes depending on either your character or your location? But I have yet to confirm that. The ship combat is serviceable, but it definitely feels simplistic- even compared to Sid Meier's Pirates. It's the same "Turn, Shoot, Wait for cannons to Re-Load" gameplay, but there's not options for different types of ammo that I've seen. Other than that, it's basically the same as SMP. I don't know if I'll be playing a ton of this, but if you're looking for a good pirate-y simulator, this is one of the best modern ones that I've come across so far.
