The hate that THIS one in particular is getting is so forced. Do your due diligence and read reviews made more then a month ago, no one was saying anything negative about this game other then the fact that it isn't a total sandbox and will naturally follow a more historical path unless you heavily deviate from it and you know enough about how the game works to know how. So it isn't literally just like an alt-history simulator out of the box where you can be like "Oh I'll just make Germany communist, America communist and the USSR right winged and see what happens". Like that was basically one of the only "complaints" I saw about this for YEARS. This is absolutely one of the greatest strategy games ever made. This one specifically, Darkest Hour, is a mod for HOI2. Idk why brainlets keep acting like this is HOI4 or something and review bombing it. I want the literate among us to notice that this HOI game, unlike others, has a different name as the developer then it does the publisher. Martin Ivanov is the developer of Darkest Hour and he did a phenomenal job at this mod and it is THE definitive way to play HOI2. I say this with an additional 100 hours on vanilla HOI2. This mod adds a ton of new provinces/tiles to every single country which is a much much needed addition. It allows you so much more strategy in maneuvering your forces, creating spearheads, etc. The decision system is also phenomenal as you, in vanilla HOI2, were really really dependent on your annual slider and the random events to enact meaningful change in your society. But now you have many more options to you at any given time like the ability to partially and fully mobilize and the economic consequences from that and so on. If you don't want to give your money to Paradox I don't blame you, they are greed personified. That doesn't make every game they have published rotten garbage unless you have no critical thinking skills though.
I've now played this game longer than the real battle of Stalingrad lasted. So I would say no don't play it. You don't want none of this in your life. Then again...Verdun lasted 7,272 hours so I can still probably try out some stuff. Maybe declare war on every other country on earth as Germany in September 1939 and fight them all with nothing but militia. One time I fought the USSR along a static front in central Europe until they ran out of manpower and I watched their armies disintegrate in place. That was pretty wild. Considering they had sustained about 59 million casualties it seemed appropriate. After slugging it out with them for 8 straight years from Latvia to Odessa. I chased their remaining units who were all at %10 strength and full organization back to Moscow forcing the Soviet capitulation in the winter of 1950. Don't try to rescue the USA from the depression and see what happens, that is pretty funny. Because of the domestic oil, Venezuela can support mechanized forces, but if you don't plan to cheat you will not be able to mobilize enough forces to attack Brazil until about 1952. You can take over all of South America, but you will end up in crazy grinding defeat against the USA after years of making them suffer over your mountain defenses. If you do cheat, you can easily choose your own adventure with just about any nation that can be made independent. Sometimes that means starting as one nation liberating another and then taking over that nation after a save. Anyway kidding aside this is the best version of HOI. Infinite replay without infinite learning curve. It is super risk on steroids, but without so much depth that you get lost in the spreadsheets some other Paradox games rely on.
Nice to start before 1936 as WWI set up what came after. Ideally there would be a 1901 or 1902 general start scenario to better kick off the post Victorian era and capture events like a choice to expand the Russo-Japanese War, Moroccan Crisis or the Italo-Turkish wars. Plus boost tech and infrastructure early on and chase more Airships so to go from an alternate Steampunk era to an alt. Ironpunk / Airpunk era.
