With about half of the variants in this game, I looked at the rules, made that one face from Tails Gets Trolled (you know the one), and stepped in warily. It then took shockingly little time for me to adapt and see the patterns like in any other puzzle game. I was genuinely unsure how a sequel to my favorite puzzle game could possibly live up to expectations, but it manages with aplomb. Like the first game, this is for people who play way too much Minesweeper and are begging for more. But it's ALSO for people who played the first one and thought its variants weren't unhinged enough. Please play this.

This and the original 14 Minesweeper Variants are the gold standard for minesweeper games today. Vanilla rules are always available to play if you're feeling like a purist. Expert Mode is on by default--something I wish every minesweeper game had. The rule for each variant is always written concisely and accompanied with example diagrams. Like it's predecessor, it's got a minimalist approach to visual and sound design (which I personally enjoy). If you don't like how it looks, bear in mind you can fully customize the color scheme for this game. If you're reading this, then I strongly recommend you give the demo a try. This and the original 14MV are both a bargain for what you're getting (this is a massive understatement). Hard for me to pick a favorite just yet, I'm still working my way through this wonderful sequel!

Another great game that takes classic minesweeper and introduces new rules that make it fun challenge while staying close to the core idea. If you're looking for game that requires you to think and analyze while being devoid of randomness then I'm sure you'll love this game. In my opinion difficulty is a little bit higher then first edition which makes second edition a true sequel. I'd recommend that if you haven't played first edition yet start by playing it first. Second edition was very pleasant surprise and I'm already hyped if any others will see light of day, but no pressure for devs, I'd rather wait longer for another banger than get something of lesser quality and they truly can deliver quality.

A lovely follow up to one of my favorite puzzle games. I recommend starting with 14 Minesweeper Variants rather than jumping into the sequel. Most of the variants introduced in the original are a little easier to grasp out of the gate. That said, I absolutely adore some of the new variants. The Encrypted variant (and its cross-pollinated child variants) are exactly my type of logic puzzle. Even the variants I was initially skeptical towards grew on me while I completed the main campaign. Looking forward to many more hours of enjoyment as I work towards the second ending and getting the rest of the acheivements.

As you may already know, Minesweeper is a classic grid-based logic puzzle game where you have to figure out which tiles are dangerous and which are safe based on numerical clues. 14 Minesweeper Variants is a series that starts from this basic idea, but elevates the gameplay to something that feels quite new and surprising with smart procedural generation which ensures that each board is logically solvable, plus a multitude of variants that tweak the basic rules. Like in the first game, the difficulty is normalized across all game modes, with a set amount of mines and usable clues for each board size. You can't adjust the details yourself - the game is tailored to provide a specific kind of a harsh logic puzzle experience where the challenge level is always high and every step needs to be performed with utmost logical rigor, like defusing a bomb. The recommended "Expert" difficulty will in fact hand you a game over if you make anything less than 100% certain deductions. Although brutal, dealing with this mode is still worth it: it's absolutely necessary to have a good grasp on the basic patterns if you want to tackle the larger boards and survive. There's a hint-button which highlights some tiles that are currently solvable. Unlike in the first game, hints can be viewed every once in a while without losing your "perfect" score for the current board. This is a nice innovation that definitely makes it easier to get into the logic of each variant while still allowing the player to make progress. The variants themselves are somewhat stranger compared to the first game. The mechanics are pushed further than before, with even some "sideboard" variants which keep track of a few extra variables on a secondary board. Some of the combined rulesets create very original and fun gameplay moments, but I do think overall 14 Minesweeper Variants 2 is slightly more inconsistent than the first title was, both in terms of difficulty and overall enjoyment. I would criticize the "Product" variant a bit, since it expects the player to have knowledge from outside the game. In this mode, the numeric clue is a square root derived from the distance of a tile to its two closest mines. High school or college math was last relevant to me about 20 years ago, and although I can roughly deal with this variant by recognizing its basic patterns, there are a lot of situations (especially on "Liar") where it can be quite obtuse too. Speaking of which, it isn't always clear how the rules interact with each other in combined modes. You may sometimes find things like lying irrational numbers (?), and I find it hard to even imagine what their range of effect might be. Another arguable drawback are the "Attachment" variants. These modes always use the sideboard together with other combined rules. Unfortunately, because there are only two main sideboard modes - "Liar" and "Encrypted" - they will keep repeating over and over again. In the long run, you'll have to play these two variants a disproportionate amount if you want to keep unlocking new things. Another thing I noticed is that this game has many variants which demand you to map out the larger board layout. "Area" and "Bridge" and the sideboard variants come to mind as examples. This kind of gameplay sometimes feels like meticulous cartography, perhaps a little slower and more tasking than more traditional Minesweeper-esque gameplay, and doing it too much at once can get tedious. I find this game to be in turn either incredibly satisfying or incredibly frustrating. It's not something you can just play to relax since it expects so much from the player. Plus, it has the occasional repetitive or obtuse moment. But if you're willing to accept this and have a lot of focus and willpower, you should find tens of hours of interesting logic puzzling here. It's simply not for the faint-hearted...
