"They want us to stay silent. But a camera can shout louder than a thousand voices." As in current times as in times immemorial the Persian heartland, Iran, has always been a place of strife but also beauty and cultures. So this little adventure game, or a interactive documentary I would rather say, named '1979 Revolution: Black Friday' by iNK Stories that came out in 2016 tells a personal and in-depth story how and why the 1978-79 revolution against the Shah and his regime occurred and leading up to faithful Friday. The game is full packed with information and history tidbits about the whole ordeal. The music is made by the Iranian composer Nima Fakhrara and I believe this was his first video game soundtrack but not his last because he co-wrote the soundtrack to 'Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2'. The voice actors in this game are all phenomenal. Not a weak performance anywhere. All of them are Iranian movie/tv actors that you have seen but never really remember if you know what I mean. Which is sad because they are all great as I said. Gameplay wise it's fairly bareboned. It takes lessons from Telltale Games if you have ever played any of their games. Go there click there and sometimes quicktime events. Not overly engaging but the game is more about the vibes and the human tragedy that the Iranian people can never catch a break then it's about innovative gameplay. They had a story they wanted to tell. And considering most of the people who developed this game are of the Iranian diaspora it is an extremely personal game. One of the most personal games I've ever played honestly. And it's a short little thing. You can be done with it in an afternoon and I would recommend it on sale. Gameplay it's very spartan and the visuals was not even good when the game came out but the game has an important culture importance in gaming at a whole. I think interactive documentaries should be more explored and would love to see more of them.
If you're into politics, history, and Telltale games, you will probably like this. Though the story is short and has an abrupt ending, I very much recommend giving it a try. There are tough decisions, emotional moments, some surprising plot twists, and moral shades of grey. My favorite part are the real photos, videos, and snippets about life in Iran--not to mention the use of Farsi. They tried to do something unique here and they succeeded. You don't often see this side of the revolution told in western media, except maybe in documentaries. I just wish it was fleshed out a little more.
"There's no shame in being invested in your people's future" Clearly inspired by Telltale-style games, it feels familiar but the gameplay itself can be clunky, with stiff controls and weird QTEs. Where the game fully shines is in its storytelling, by tackling a subject rarely explored in the West, the game reaches its full potential when it explores these events and their consequences, offering a glimpse into another era that is now more relevant than ever.
