My first impression is that the game has a lack of character or direction. It's familiar but new and everything is scatterbrain, mashed together bits of nostalgia. There's a hint of "cheating" to some of the difficulty in strange, swirling white dots that are ...bullets? Difficult to notice among the on screen pixel debris from your own fire and they damage you without knowing exactly what hit you. Maybe I should go with my first impression and discard the game, but I admire the design and effort put into it as a love letter to arcade/16 bit gaming. Altered Beast, Alien, R-Type and even Battle Toads (final area is reminiscent of the jet ski level) are nodded to and the music is 1989. I enjoy the passion, obscure references and details and feel of it. It's cohesive in the sum of its parts even if it lacks a solid direction. There are quite a few weapons to buy and upgrade and enough money to get four of them and a "tier 2" ship at level 2 by the end of it by replaying one or two stages. A fully loaded ship feels nearly broken in it's power during the boss fights but decent reflexes will still be needed on the later stages. One weapon that explodes with shrapnel that adds extra damage blocked some of the obstacles including the aforementioned white dots of environment fire. Dialog later on also got in the way of what's happening on screen. This is fine on sale with its relatively short length and hits a nostalgic note or two. The bugs I found were an animation freeze on the first tier two ship while it moved, stopping on an animation frame, though the ship itself could still be controlled; and the autofire/turbo when holding the fire button down would just stop firing for a second, then it would resume. Three "Power-Up"s out of five.

It's OK I bought it out of nostalgia and though I don't hate it But wasn't exactly thrilled either. It has the challenge that used to come with the Gradius and similar games. However it really didn't capture it. I know this was a different game entirely but you can see some similarities where it was trying to take from the games that came before it or rather was inspired by. It's OK honestly it's good for a little nostalgia or to just turn off your mind and not think to hard about what will work. The only thing that was a let down for me though was the final boss which I won't say was horrible but not exactly something to be thrilled over. Over all as I said it's ok and just use a quick fill in shut your mind off and have fun sort of game.

Very cool game, for those young enough to remember.... this is THE spiritual successor of Xenon-2 the legendary vertical scrolling shooter with weapon shop between levels, also with local coach CO-OP like this. I don't know why the poor reviews. Play on controller, figure out the menus, and unexpected discovery - you can rotate your shield with the bumper buttons on the controller !!!

The game is a lot of fun, old school style side scrolling shooter. There is a HUGE flaw that should be patched is that you cannot really farm currency by replaying levels which absolutely kills the replay value.

Detailed and Positive Review of "1993 Space Machine" [quote=Wendrex] Developer: Exceed, Aurora Punks Genre: Shoot 'em up (Shmup) Platforms: PC (Steam), PlayStation 4, Xbox One "1993 Space Machine" is a game that captures the classic essence of shoot 'em ups from the 1990s, while incorporating modern elements that make it a unique and captivating experience. Developed by Exceed and Aurora Punks, the game is a well-made homage to the classics of the genre, such as "Gradius" and "R-Type", but with its own identity that makes it stand out. Gameplay: The gameplay of "1993 Space Machine" is its strongest point. The game offers precise and responsive control, essential for a shmup, where precision and quick reflexes are fundamental. The player pilots a highly customizable ship, with a variety of weapons and upgrades that can be combined in countless ways. This customization allows each player to find a playstyle that suits their preferences, whether focusing on fast attacks, massive firepower, or robust defenses. The combat system is challenging but fair. The enemies and attack patterns are well-designed, requiring the player to learn and adapt to the situations. The bosses are a highlight, with creative designs and battle phases that test both the player's skill and strategy. Graphics and Visual Style: The game adopts a retro visual style, with pixelated sprites that recall the classics of the 90s. However, the graphics are modernized with light and particle effects that give a contemporary touch to the visuals. The colors are vibrant and the scenarios are varied, ranging from space environments to alien bases and exotic planets. The attention to detail is remarkable, with each phase having a unique visual identity. Soundtrack: The soundtrack of "1993 Space Machine" is another highlight. Composed of electronic and synthwave music, the soundtrack perfectly complements the atmosphere of the game, increasing immersion and tension during the most intense stages. The tracks are energetic and memorable, contributing to the feeling of nostalgia while sounding fresh and modern. Replayability: The game offers a good amount of content, with several stages and game modes that encourage replayability. In addition to the main campaign, there are extra challenges, online rankings and the possibility to try out different combinations of weapons and upgrades. This ensures that the game remains interesting even after several playthroughs. Conclusion: "1993 Space Machine" is an excellent addition to the shoot 'em up genre, combining the best of the classics of the 90s with modern innovations. The solid gameplay, captivating visuals, immersive soundtrack and high customization make this game an experience that pleases both long-time fans of the genre and new players. Exceed and Aurora Punks have managed to create a game that is both an homage to and an evolution of the shmup, ensuring that "1993 Space Machine" will be remembered as a standout title in the genre. Rating: 9/10 Recommended for: Shoot 'em up fans, gamers who enjoy retro games with a modern twist, and anyone looking for a fair and rewarding challenge.
