The learning curve is steep for sure, but you also have two different heroes with different playstyles available and you can play most of the game at your own pace. The bosses change depending on order and once you figure out your weakness, you can adapt easily. Total recomendation.

Gonna throw my hat in the ring and say this game is still worth playing, even after its sequel's release. If you're only gonna buy one, then yes, get 30XX. 30XX is a bigger game, with more in-depth mechanics, more features, a level editor, beautiful art style, even a non-roguelike campaign if you're interested in that sort of thing. So with all those points in 30XX's favor, it's easy to see why that game has mostly replaced its predecessor for so many. However, I would also say that all of these mechanics turn 30XX into a slightly different type of roguelike. There's much more material management and decision-making, more currencies, optional challenges to be enabled at the start of a level, Nina can fuse her weapon now, overall more of a character-building element with more chances to choose between multiple distinct upgrades (some of which having drawbacks), and with all that: sometimes I do prefer the more simple experience 20XX offers 20XX is a simpler game, but never to the point of "shut your brain off and have fun", I don't tend to like that kind of game as much. Rather, 20XX feels much more like a traditional Mega Man X game with a roguelike twist. Almost every item and upgrade only makes you more powerful without drawback, additional mobility (without speed upgrades) is rarely more powerful than the strongest mobility upgrade in your average MMX game, and you can still get to a point of having a pretty strong power trip without having to put a ton of thought into long-term planning. I will never argue 20XX is better than it's successor. 30XX breaks into much more of its own identity, and the further planning elements objectively add more depth to the gameplay. Yet sometimes, I like focusing more on the Mega Man X elements than the roguelike elements. 30XX strikes a better balance between its roguelike and Mega Man-like elements, while forging its own identity. 20XX instead feels like a Mega Man X game with procedurally generated levels, and a lack of strength cap. This distinction makes 30XX a better roguelike, but I think it also makes both games worth playing if you're someone like me, who enjoy the average Mega Man game more than the average roguelike Last thing, supposing you can only get one, note 30XX has a non-roguelike mode which makes it play like a traditional Mega Man game. This does forfeit any roguelike elements at all (i think), but if you're also someone like me here, that could balance the score out a bit for you. LAST NOTE: Both games have full local and online co-op, either with someone who owns a copy of the game, or with someone who doesn't own it with remote play together (though do expect lightly worse connection if you use that last option). Both games are just more fun with a friend. Whichever one you decide to purchase, try and share the joy with someone, if you can

It is really hard to recommend 20XX when 30XX is currently available. I like what 20XX did, and I appreciate the groundwork it laid for 30XX, but it has a lot of jank, the art style is not really my cup of tea, and the way the seeds generated some of the levels were more frustrating than fun. It isn't a bad game and in a vacuum I probably would suggest it, but seriously just go pick up 30XX instead. I am still clicking "Yes" because I want to give the game and the devs a good review as I like what they have done, but I really should stress the jump in quality between the two games is astounding. (My hours played are wrong, as I spent the majority of my playtime on a friend's account before finally getting it myself to support the devs. I probably have closer to 30 to 40 hours in all combined).

Very enjoyable gameplay if you like fast (and sometimes precise) platforming and projectile dodging. I personally have no great attachment to the roguelike aspect (due to the potential for bad luck to mess up runs), but in this case I thought the upgrades (including permanent upgrades) were meaningful and usually led to a reasonable difficulty curve. The final levels made me sweat a bit, but beating the game was quite satisfying. Also, the music is great and definitely encouraged me to keep coming back for another run.

I like this game a lot, but unfortunately, the roguelike level design is it's biggest flaw. It just feels unfair at times.
