I dead fr spent the first 10 hours understanding absolutely nothing. After that my pattern recognition started cooking and I was doing so much random stuff in game things just started falling into place. The thought of solving the language and being able to understand was really exciting for me and it is very rewarding once you are able to do that. If you go through 2 cycles not understanding anything I would recommend reading the community post by cute cyanide, it gives really good hints without spoiling anything.

This game made me cry. Let me preface this by saying it is not a game that holds your hand. Beyond being urged to "learn words," there is no true tutorial or clear guidance, and even the first words you learn could end up being incorrect. That may be annoying to some, but it's exactly the charm for people who like deciphering codes, solving abstract puzzles, and connecting dots without being spoon-fed. However, many of the negative reviews stem from people who gave up at the beginning. 7 Days to End with You combines point-and-click gameplay with visual novel-esque storytelling and language deciphering for its special brand of experience. You awaken in an unfamiliar house with amnesia, greeted by a feminine red-haired figure (for spoiler reasons, I'll call them Red from now on) who speaks in a language you don't understand. Within just seven days, you have to attempt to both understand your host, as well as figure out what is going on around you. The core mechanics are pretty straightforward: interact with objects, listen to Red speak, and try to determine the meanings of unknown words. Clicking on any word in the dialogue allows you to input your own interpretation, and then add meaning to said words by colour-coding them (personally, I used the colours to make a mental note of how sure I am of their meanings, with red being not sure at all, and green being pretty confident). These words then enter your personal dictionary, which carries over across multiple playthroughs — as you encounter those words again, you can either modify their meaning or solidify their correct definitions, and thus you slowly begin to comprehend the story being told. A playthrough could take anywhere from 15 minutes to several hours, depending on how deeply you engage with the language mechanics. My very first attempt was nearly 6 hours because I attempted to decipher every word I could get my hands on from the beginning. There are multiple endings, and the game intends for you to do several playthroughs to get to the "final" ending. I accidentally got it in my first playthrough, so while that is technically possible, I wouldn't recommend trying to solve the mystery in your first playthrough. Once you've cracked many of the words, you'll likely feel like interactions and exploration becomes a bit repetitive — there are, however, scenes you will only see by letting the day pass on, so don't just simply go to bed once you've deciphered most words. However, the deciphering part is also the tricky thing. Keep in mind that a) some words are misspellt b) you won't get proper sentences, more like "You go, I follow" c) letters are inconsistent between words but consistent within words d) words that are close to each other have similar meanings, e.g. colours, and e) the game was originally written in Japanese. Also, here is one freebie: There is a word I originally translated as "Judgement" (you will know why once you find it). It is actually "Punish(ment)", which in turn is actually "Sin". You will understand in time what I mean by that. Let me start off by saying it's a nice game. It's a very nice and short game, but there are some issues with it. 1) The game is translated into English - and while this normally wouldn't be an issue, it becomes a slight issue when the game is about language and about deciphering ciphers. 2) The gameplay is a bit repetitive, and once you've learned certain words, there's no incentive to do certain stuff 3) The advertisement oversells the game. I was under the impression that learning more words would drastically shift the story and how I interacted with it and that was very much not true lol. Like, even when you unlock the secret room and walk in with the girl, she just tells you what the things are for and that's it lol. 4) The game doesn't really tell you what to do, apart from "learn words". There is an event and a room that you can easily miss if you don't consult the guides. Speaking of guides: They are very helpful, and there are spoiler-free versions that I'd recommend checking out. The game is not good at giving you the information that you need, and most guides will have an introductory bit that covers those. Here's what I'd tell someone trying it for the first time: 1- Its caveman speak. Don't go into it expecting full sentences and grammar. 2- The letters are not consistent between words, but they are consistent within each word. 3- You can leave the girl at the table to explore the house on your own. 4- In the alchemy room, there is a little safe that you can enter a codeword in. That is a good tool to see the whole alphabet, and also to identify each individual letter. 5- Remembering the previous instances of the use of a word is very helpful. 6- Words that are put close to each other on the word list are similar to each other/express similar concepts. 7- There are some words who only appear once or twice, and you might have to consult a guide on those and that's okay. Same with a couple words that got a bit weird in translation. Like Punishment being the same as Sin 8- Dreams are there to teach you some words. If you choose the correct option it will say "Yes, it meant something like this" remember to record them in your wordbook. Overall, its a bit less than I expected, but hey, cool game, cool concept, and if you're also a language/cipher nerd you might like it. I'll give it a tentative 7/10
