This game is far from perfect, but I enjoyed it. Despite the various issues that others have highlighted, when you're able to just drive and ignore all the other racers and weird missions and so on, it's a nice experience. The aesthetic, the music, the driving mechanics, they're all solid.

80s Overdrive is like jumping into a time machine shaped like a synth-powered sports car. The game is undeniably pretty — neon sunsets, pixel palm trees, and highways that never end. It nails that '80s vibe so hard, I half expected a cassette to pop out of my monitor. The gameplay is simple, arcadey fun — just like it should be. You race, you dodge traffic, you upgrade your ride, and you blast some absolutely glorious synthwave tunes along the way. It's not trying to reinvent racing games — it’s trying to remind you why they were fun in the first place. Sure, the AI is a bit aggressive, and occasionally you'll crash into a billboard that came out of nowhere — but that’s part of the charm. It's less about realism, more about raw vibe. Pros: [*]Gorgeous neon pixel art and perfect 80s atmosphere [*]Fantastic synthwave soundtrack [*]Fun, arcade-style racing with upgrades [*]Nostalgic without feeling outdated [*]Easy to pick up and play Cons: [*]AI can be overly aggressive at times [*]Some track elements can feel a bit unfair or sudden Rating: 8/10 – Looks like a pixel dream, sounds like a mixtape, and plays like the best summer you never had. 80's OVERDRIVE is a decent racing game with pixel art, reminiscent of old-school 2D racers. It has a simple but satisfying feel. Besides the other racers, you’ll also have to deal with traffic and even police cars. Even traffic can be aggressive, but I think it’s all part of the arcade experience. The retro yet clean graphics and cool soundtrack are a big part of the package. In career mode, you compete in a series of races while upgrading your car and/or buying new ones. Pretty standard stuff, and it isn’t hard, although the final race can be annoying. You’ll also have some missions, with a few requiring you to lose races on purpose for some reason. There’s also a time attack mode, where you try to go as far as you can before time runs out. You get extra time by driving close to traffic, but I found the amount of extra time you get to be very inconsistent. Lastly, there’s a sort of level creator, where you create tracks by specifying some parameters. It feels more like an extra feature, and you can’t race in them—only do time trials. It doesn’t have a lot of content, and you can get all achievements in around 6-7 hours if you know what you’re doing. However, some are missable and/or bugged, which is my main complaint. But it can be very cheap on sale, and for that price, it’s a fun little game. I enjoyed it overall and can recommend it.

I had a hard time deciding between a thumbs up or down. It's a fun game, with great graphics and music in my opinion, there's variation in the circuits, and I even enjoy the arcadey driving mechanics (traffic and all), but it presents a lot of questionable design choices otherwise. Generally there is very little consequence for the player's choices - little room for balancing risk and reward, and that's what I think is useful to expand upon. There are multiple cars with varying characteristics, but they can all be upgraded to the exact same performance (which is not obvious from the start), so acquiring them is strictly an achievement hunt affair. I haven't done the math to see which car is the best deal (one of the middle ones that don't need much upgrading to max them out), but the game prompts you both to upgrade your car often, and that it's cheaper to just buy a new one. One of the upgrades (the radar) is useless as it announces the police the instant it also appears on screen. The cars need maintenance in the form of refueling and repairing, but there is no strategy here involving benefits for risking to delay it, or consequences for wrecking the car completely. The price is always proportional to the damage and the tow truck even puts you back in the middle of the race. I do like that there's a minigame whenever you run out of money, you're never screwed. The missions appear randomly, and if you decline or fail them they apparently do reappear, but only upon first playing new tracks. If you're out of tracks you need to create a new profile, but you're then offered the missions starting from the first one all over again, so you'll have to basically replay the game. At the starting line, when waiting for the green light, there's no sweetspot for a boost, you're just discouraged from revving early but that's extremely easy to avoid. And other little stuff like this, where there's only a simulacrum of choice, and the jokes justifying it don't really hit, which make the game feel not well thought out. I think it's a decent game on the border of being great, with not much updating needed to get it there. I do recommend trying it out when it's on sale, but don't get too involved in its achivements and such, like I'm doing right now, because it gets frustrating.
