Considering how long I played this game for, I can't really not recommend this game - however I will say it might not be for everyone. I first saw Old School Rally because of a gif shared on social media and immediately it made me think of playing Colin McRae Rally 2.0 on the original PlayStation, I didn't need to see anymore to be sold on the game. I then played a bunch in Early Access, now the game has released I've returned to it to get all the achievements. Ultimately the gameplay loop in this game, regardless of what mode you play (Time Trial, Tournament, Vs.) is: you race a two-four minute long course and try to beat a target time. If you like the idea of that you'll likely enjoy this game, if not I would advise avoiding. (And note, even the vs. mode is just against another car with no collision, so it's more like racing a ghost and beating a time trial.) The graphics are inspired by early 3D (PS1 era) games and recreates that almost perfectly, this might not be a good thing however - artifacts from those games are seen here as well, vibrating polygons, draw distance pop-in and weird lighting all make for a more authentic experience but also one that might be off-putting for some. Personally, the way the game controlled felt modern and responsive and that was enough to let me overlook the issues I had with some of the other nostalgic design choices present. I do have one major issue I would like to see patched with an update - after beating all the tournaments and acquiring all but one achievement, the final achievement is for unlocking all the cars. Despite having beaten every paying tournament (after about 12 hours or so of play) I still had to earn twice as much again to finish unlocking the final cars. This means having to just play through tournaments (or daily challenges) again and again. I think a good way to fix this would be if completing Time Trial races gave a small amount of currency (maybe 500?) each time you completed one - Time Trials have global leader boards so I think it would be a fun way to grind out the last few thousands currency you need for the final achievement and give you something to aim for! (Or I guess adding leader boards to the tournament races would work too?). Overall I left the game wanting more and I think that speaks very highly of the core gameplay loop! This was a perfect game for the Steam Deck and was a very satisfying game (for me) to play. I think some people will bounce off it for various reasons, but I thought it was very good. I hope they add more or follow it up with an improved sequel.
I absolutely adore this game. I grew up playing things like Ridge Racer, Outrun, and numerous other titles in the arcades. But the one I always loved, that I would have given my spleen for, was my own cabinet version of Sega Rally. Is this game Sega Rally? No. Did it cost me my spleen? Also no. Does it give me that same thrill of a corner well taken, the perfect slide, the zig and zag of tight corners taken one after the other at high speed? Yes. Yes it does. It isn't perfect, the physics are... interesting, but by god it's fun. Sit down, grab that gamepad, and re-live those wonderful, loud, manic hours you spent in the arcade as a kid, trying again and again to get that one last race in before your money ran out, or you had to go home. Also, the soundtrack is absolutely banging. This is genuinely the best money I have spent on a video game since I was 16 years old, smacking 50 pence pieces into a cigarette stinking arcade machine, on a cold blustery day down on the English coast, while my bored grandparents moaned about the "price of fish and chips these days". Buy it.
A great old school rally game. Imagine that. Is it a realistic rally game? No, but it's fun, and that's what counts for a game like this. It also runs on pretty much anything. I play it on my indie "Steam Machine" with a very modest AMD 2400GE APU w/ Vega 11 iGPU at 60FPS locked. If you like PS1 era racing games you'll dig it. I'd like to see the cars have a bit more inertia is my only critique.
