A Mortician's Tale is a warm little interactive fiction illuminating the work that surrounds the inevitable. It's well paced, well written, and kind, while delivering criticism upon the things that are made more difficult than they need to be at such a painful time. Thinking about these things, as the game so wisely points out, is healthy, and I believe playing this can be a great way to start approaching that if you haven't before. Absolutely worth a playthrough.
The game is short but well done. Methodical and informative without being graphic. Respectful and also cozy, if that makes any sense. My husband died last year and this was a good tool to help work through some of the grief. I cried, in a good way, thinking of someone being there to treat him with such kindness and gentleness after he had passed. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea, but for me, it was good. And I think Jeff would have liked it too.
I found this game after a friend of mine heard about it from a video about "cozy games and misogyny". I'm currently working in the death industry and am finishing up my degree. I thought this game was a pretty good look into the "backroom" parts of funeral service. The soundtrack made it very peaceful, and I really loved the email articles! Even though we can't really opt out of certain cases in real life, I thought the choice to opt out of the suicide case was a nice touch, especially for someone playing the game who may not be in the industry. I would love to see a game like this go into more detail with arrangements and "front of house" stuff, but overall I give this game a solid 10/10.
