Just Shapes and Beats on Crack The game throws Stars at the speed of light at you, forces you to pass an astronomy exam in at least one level, and occasionally forgets to kill you when you absolutely deserve it. 10/10. I have no idea how I'm still alive.

Alright, figured it’s time for a review before release day. The gameplay is fun. ok thanks have a nice day For a lot of years it’s been a community-ran game; one of the most important features of it is the Steam Workshop support for custom levels to be created by anyone. There are a lot of fun and interesting levels to check out; the game certainly lets you go wild on the ideas you can do. While the community is somewhat “small”, it’s been very helpful and nice. Hope it grows and stays that way too. One of the biggest things that has been missing for years has been the story mode, but that’s going to be very great and fun too! Project Arrhythmia, or now known as Afterbeat, was a game I always struggled to run because it’s always been particularly… resource-intensive CPU-wise. It still is, somewhat, but it’s improved a ton over recent years. My regret is just not getting a better PC sooner to play it.

ok before i start this review i do want to say that the game right now only has one chapter and all the workshop content. so this review is largely based off of the few levels that are in the game and the workshop content that i've played. as a result, take this with a grain of salt! (this also means i'll exclusively be reviewing the gameplay, as there's few music tracks in the game and barely any story so far) anyways, for those of you coming from jsab after hearing about this game, i will say - jsab DOES have better game design in general and is therefore a more fun game (though at the cost of having less content). this may be personal preference, but afterbeat feels very overloaded with visual effects for "cool and aura!!" (mostly boss levels) but, uh... that doesn't work all that well when afterbeat, much like jsab, is a bullet hell game and is therefore geared around dodging precisely. constant camera movement makes that really hard to do well and often just ends up being a little annoying, and the accessibility options in the game don't let you disable it if you find it annoying. the player controls in afterbeat are also a lot more slidey in comparison to jsab. it's not by much, but i do prefer the very snappy movement that jsab has considering the aforementioned point about afterbeat being a bullet hell game and therefore very focused on precision outside of those two things... it's, uh, pretty much identical to jsab, but with a level editor! so if you happen to like that game, you can get much more content out of this one! if you're not a jsab fan, though, i'd recommend getting the demo version of this game to see if you like it, or try out jsab first. (plus, at the time of writing this review, jsab is fully finished while afterbeat is not, making for a more polished overall experience)

I am giving this a tentative positive review. Its fun, but I do wish the obstacles had to be evaded to the beat more, it would make this game from fine enough to a really good game. As it currently stands, you could turn off the volume and do fairly well, which is a bummer. The secret level at the end even had parts of it where you had to avoid to the beat a bit and I really enjoyed that. If the full game comes out, and has more of that, I think its an easy slam dunk and a good buy, otherwise it will be kind of hard to justify playing this over other games. All that being said, its a pretty fun bullet hell, with creative level designs, good music, what seems to be a fairly robust level creator from the custom levels I tried, and a heck of a lot of potential. I look forward to new updates.

While the name change may be controversial, the original was long winded and hard to read/spell. I personally like the new name, maybe keep the old name as a subtitle. Yes its essentially JSAB with custom levels, but its distinct enough from it to be its own thing. As you can tell by my pfp I like to play custom levels in games. Rare crashes but i'm using Linux so that might change things. Overall 8/10 game.
