Honestly, the game is far more fun than I assumed it would be. It's just like guitar hero, but with much more customization, more diverse music, and the overdrive is used automatically instead of requiring you to use it. The options on hand are insane, you can choose between four different button options, you can complete customize your track, you can even choose the sounds your beats make. The amount of content on offer here is staggering, but it comes with a price. The elephant in the room is the atrocious monetization. This is even more egregious then Cytus 2 got in it's later years. So first of all, the game itself is 50 dollars, which is very expensive for a rhythm game even with the content on offer here. Then, there is almost 800 dollars of dlc. Yes you heard me right, 800 dollars worth of tracks, skins, skips, and sound effects. Assuming you don't want that other junk, what about the songs alone? Well just 20 songs will set you back 30 dollars. Yep, around 60% of the base asking price of the game. It's kind of ridiculous, luckily stuff goes on sale for cheap but the entire concept is out of this world to me. Also on top of the absurd amounts of paid dlc, there's a fortnite-esque item shop??? The shop uses a premium currency you can also buy in game which is just nuts on top of everything I already said. Speaking of Fortnite this game also has a paid battlepass! Pretty much anything that can be monetized is in this game. There's a decent amount of content to start, but the amount of stuff to buy is overwhelming even when it's all on sale. tl;dr: Only ever look at this game or it's dlc on sales. Do not ever pay full price for this, it's just ridiculous all around. Plus you can't mod the game, plus it's only online, plus the game by itself is almost 100gb. Lots of stipulations but if you can grab the game on heavy sale it's a steal. In terms of music quality and how it functions as a game, I'd give it a cool 8/10. If I didn't get it on sale it would probably be a different story. Also as a side note, I'm not sure if this only happens to me, but the quit game button in this game doesn't even quit the game properly the game stays stuck running in the background of my computer refusing to close unless I literally shut Steam down, so there's that as well.
A fun rythm game, I played a lot of osu but this is the first time I'm playing a "piano roll" rythm game and I think this one is worth the money (bought it on sale). It runs well on my weak office laptop as well as steam deck. There are quite a few of songs I like but this will be very individual. That said I there are three things I don't like: - Extra songs are paid DLCs - It downloads all available content including DLCs, making the game 80+ GB (To be fair it was convenient when I eventually bought song packs) - It requires Internet (I dislike this the most as I sometimes play it on ♥♥♥♥♥♥ wifi and it keeps kicking me out every time it disconnects)
I’ll put this as a recommendation just in case, but there are definitely some things worth mentioning. Let's start with the positives. The UI is very neat, clean, and easy on the eyes. Everything feels modern and polished. The visual novel mode was also a pleasant surprise. I honestly didn't expect a rhythm game to include a VN, but it's an interesting addition that helps it stand out from the crowd. The game is supporting their respective artist that is included in this game. Now for the negatives. If you're only looking for a standard keyboard rhythm game (4K, 5K, 6K) I honestly think you're better off playing osu!mania or Quaver. If you're looking at this game, chances are that you've already heard of those titles anyway. First of all, the main thing is that they're free. More importantly, they give you access to an enormous library of songs, also for no additional cost. You can choose exactly what maps you want to download and play at any time without restricting you to some songs, which makes managing storage much easier (Yes, osu! does provide paying monthly by "supporter" but its mainly optional and with the soon about to finish osu!lazer you can already download via in-game for free anyway). Naturally, the more maps you download, the larger those games become, but at least you're in control of that. This game on the other hand, comes with around 150 songs alongside other content such as the visual novel mode, tower-stacking minigames, and more, all packed into roughly 84 GB (as of writing this review). If you want additional songs, you'll need to purchase DLC packs that they offer. I wouldn't really recommend those unless they're on sale or you genuinely love the songs included. This next point is purely personal preference. Since I started playing rhythm games through osu! around 2017, I've become much more accustomed to Japanese vocals. While this game does feature songs in multiple languages, I wasn't familiar with probably 90% of the songs included in the base game. I'm far from being a top player, but I've stayed involved with the osu! communities over the years, so the soundtrack felt surprisingly unfamiliar to me. For some that could be good, but not for me. Another thing worth mentioning is the skin system. Unlike osu! or Quaver where you can freely customize your notes and UI, skins here are tied to progression. I mean there are some customization that you could do in-game but not as open as others, there are only set presets that you could do to personalize it. So if you're used to playing with circle notes, arrow notes, or heavily customized skins, you're out of luck. If you're already comfortable with bar notes, though, you'll probably feel right at home. Also... there's a battle pass. In a rhythm game. Why? 6/10
Style & Presentation DJMAX RESPECT V is an absolute visual aura farming fest for rhythm game fans. The developers completely nailed the presentation. From the sleek menus to the gorgeous background animations that play during each track, the game has a remarkably polished identity. It creates an incredibly immersive environment that makes you want to keep playing just to see what the next song feels like. The customizable gears, note skins and sound fx also add a lot of personalization to the gameplay. DJMAX RESPECTs Your Time There's no campaign or story timesink, you can play whenever, stop whenever, which is really all we rhythm game fans need. Gameplay-wise, the core mechanics are incredibly tight and satisfying. You can choose between multiple key modes ranging from 4B to 8B. This makes it accessible for newcomers while offering an insanely high skill ceiling for veterans. The base game alone already comes with a large variety of tracks spanning EDM, pop, rock, and more. There is also a competitive online mode if you want to test your reflexes against the community. Technicals & Additional Notes Performance is buttery smooth. I have had no issues with input lag whether I am playing on a keyboard or a controller. Things to Note: [*] DLCs: There is a massive amount of DLCs available and buying every expansion can be expensive. The game has frequent sales, so I recommend waiting for a sale before picking up the extra song packs. [*] Always Online: The game requires a constant internet connection to play. This applies even in single player freestyle mode. Overall, it is one of the best rhythm games available on PC right now.
