I was surfing Limewire many years ago searching for hentai (yup, teenage hormones) and somehow this game came up. I had no idea what kinda hentai an "Age of Wonders" was, but I consider myself an open-minded individual so I installed. That was how I got tricked into playing my first 4X Turn Based Strategy game. It’s been many years, and many 4x games, but this remains one of my darling favourites. The graphics are very pleasing. The late 90’s / early 2000’s saw the culmination of decades of 2D refinement, and the lush, isometric sprites look better than 90% of 3D games which followed. I played on a 1080 projector across my “98 inch” wall monitor and it looked like a fantasy painting. Emotionally, the game feels more akin to a novel. Slow but rich and deliberate. The overworld has many little details. Some games the map is clearly only a gameplay arena, with no rhyme or reason for the placement of things. But in Shadow Magic, it feels like a lived world. There are so many little stories and world-building details for those who take the time to explore. One of my fav moments was when I scrolled passed a city between mountain folds, and unexpectedly a quiet wind began howling. I paused there a good minute, listening to the music and soaking it in. That to me is the essence of good fantasy: being grounded in the landscape. Gameplay wise, it's not a Paradox game, but its deep enough. The progression of your heroes, empire, and spells creates long term goal, enticing you forward until the clock strikes 2am (again!). Battles can be also surprisingly tense. Certain battles (especially when the CPU somehow sneaks 4 stacks past the frontlines) can come down to the wire. Every unit ability and spell is used to turn the tide and victory feel hard-earned and well fought. But for all it's pros, once you learn the game, balance can become broken. The ability to create new villages means most difficult map can be beaten by turtling and crowding Tier 3 cities until you emerge with multiple doomstacks. Certain units feel underpowered. I played with the 1.4 Unofficial patch, but still I found some units almost completely useless. Lastly, late game cities build almost exactly the same; it would have been interesting to have competing specializations for income / production / research etc... The story is... decent. It's better than the dogpile that was Wizard's Throne, but with how rich the world is, I think the story could have been better. With that said, there were a few little quips and dialgoues that made me laugh. And Julia is still my Queen! All in all, shadow Magic is the peak of Age of Wonders franchise. The series may have moved on to 3D, but while we gained an extra dimension, we also lost some soul. This game will forever remain a gem in my eyes.

Age of Wonders Shadow Magic is the definitive update to Age of Wonders 2, and you may safely ignore AOW2 without missing any cool stuff. The AOW franchise is the spiritual successor to Master of Magic, and great fun all around. If nothing else, download it for the scenario editor and random map generator. You won't be sorry. Hours of fun ahead for you, and a truly relaxing and chill little empire builder.

I enjoyed it for over a hundred hours. The power trip for each faction was cool, i especially liked being evil. But it is very old, watch a youTube video to see if you can handle that little con. Have fun

Better and more inspired than the modern versions. This game has a lot of charm for sure, not only due to its wonderful art style but also for being extremely unforgiving, stats for both enemies and your units are hard-coded and the abstract rule is basically that if the combined total of your stats and skills is less than that of your opponent, you lose. There is no sugar-coated way to escape this outcome, no suggestions to be sure that every encounter is in your favor, no retries, no dynamic level scaling garbage to safeguard you. This is why it's a great game and one of the best in this genre.
