overall a nice game, it coudld just use a bit better modding support. also there arent that many mods out there. the game also does not seem to get any more updates that could help with modding. all units have a strength rating/estimate, which actually seems to be a good indicator of army strength. you should still check what units are in an army, but generally I can see if a battle will be able to be easily won wiht just a quick look at the army stength values. tech is often repeated, ie, you have multiple techs that increse mining output by a few percent. But its not really an issue in my oppinion. the tech tree is just a bit artifically big because of that, it could probbly be consolidated, but thats probably debatable. magic research works better in my oppinion, and I like how magic works in this game. I also sometimes still learn new things while playing. I wouldnt call the game exiting, but it nice and relaxing for me, and I like it more than dominion. I would just like to see better modding support, but I guess the game would probably have to be designed differently to make much happen there. I would call this my favorite hex based fantasy strategy game. though I never really got to the endgame before, at a certain size the empire is just a little big and I have a lot of units to manage. there are ai controls, but Im not sure if I trust the ai with my units that I carefully controlled to get them high level. the game also isnt really that deep, the basics are simple enough to understand, you can probably spend hours learnng to understand the stats, if you want to, but overall the game is simple, but I would say in a goo way, its not bloated.
Despite the graphics (which I highly recommend the Hi-res mod for) the actual design is phenomenal. As models in your unit die your amount of attacks and damage scale down appropriately. There are evolutions for many monsters. The xp curve requires a little tweaking though. Overall it has more satisfying combat than most games of this type.
Always liked games with a lot of depth. Every time I play I find I new mechanic I was ignorant to before. The enjoyment I get out of this game doesn't come from the challenge or difficultly in winning, but without fail, finding out I was ignorant to half the game. Its complexity comes not just from an increasing level of granularity, but more and more mechanics. You can win while interacting with less than half of the game mechanics; the fun part is that it doesn't matter what half. Overall, it plays a bit like CIV, but with a whole bunch more stuff going on to make it high fantasy. I would liken it to CoE, but it's more sedentary; you should not be losing territory. It shares in that weird feeling of a 4x game feeling "Open World". Very good.
