I'd only recommend it if you played the first one and you just want more. It's not a bad game or story, but it really struggles to hold up against the original. Spoilers. There are multiple things I ended up disliking: [*]Date is mysteriously missing for most of the game. Pairing Aiba with Mizuki sucks as a dynamic: both of them are the straight-man to Date, so having both of them together never seems to result in interesting interactions. Their character dynamics make for an effective yet uninteresting pair. [*]Ryuki and Tama are a great pair, but Ryuki is too braindamaged for most of the game to fully enjoy the chemistry between the two. When not playing as Ryuki, there's plenty of mentions of Tama helping him through his illness yet for some reason they rarely if ever show her doing so and Tama doesn't really interact with Aiba or Mizuki throughout the game almost at all. [*]The twist reveal sucks, a lot. At no point did I feel like things were starting to come together or did I feel like I was figuring things out on my own. In the original game, finishing routes slowly but surely allowed you to piece things together yourself before the game explicitly says it outright. In this game, every event is deliberately shown to you out-of-order, then the game just fixes the order for you halfway through. [*]I think this is more of a Japan thing, but classic "everyone is using rubber bullets/less lethal force and gets knocked out for a nice nap", including when Kizuna uses a minigun in the finalie. Apparently only the villain is actually allowed to kill people. Also, Amame evidently gets in trouble for killing a literal serial killer who was on his way to racking up a double-digit body count. [*]In addition to having to run down two separate chronological stories and tie them together, the game goes all over the place with curveballs in a way that just seems to see if it can keep throwing them. It gets to the point where nothing really surprises you because everything is so bizzare it becomes normal. People having secret genetic clones that were actually impersonating them in events you saw previously, underground cultists trying to penetrate the fabric of their reality, and a third AI ball that's named but of course never introduced and characters say won't talk for pitiful reasons. Its kind of just a mess. Somehow the first game about the "dream machine that's actually a body switching machine" is way more grounded. Like I said, complaints aside, its an OK game. Its just not as good a ride as the first.

This is my trash and I love it. I eat it up every single time. The sequel expands on both the depth and ridiculousness of the first game, and I think that's an admirable thing, because the first was already pretty buckwild. And yet somehow they make me care so much about these clowns they call characters. I would die for Kanami Date.

I enjoyed it, but I agree with others who say it isn't quite as good as the first game. I was surprised that the story doesn't branch as early or often as the first game. Even with its shortcomings, it tells a very interesting story and is full of surprises. My only real complaint is about one timed puzzle section with the display being vertically mirrored (upside down). That is one diabolical puzzle. I had to sit a small hand mirror on my desk and look down at the reflection to get through that one.

AI: The Somnium Files was a fantastic experience, but nirvanA Initiative completely surpassed my expectations, refining and expanding on everything that made the first game great and adding to the fact that Spike Chunsoft does amazing work, I was thrilled to see how well this sequel captured the essence of the original while delivering a fresh experience to an already amazing story. the music, story, characters and choices combined together with the pop culture references make this game funny and easily a great choice for those who love Mystery Visual Novels.

Great game, but hard to compete with the first AITSF Why it falls short of the first game and what it does better AI The Somnium Files Nirvana Initiative... I'll just use AI:N to keep it short, is a personal top 10 games for me, however it falls short of the first game. I'll start with the improvements, the gameplay is probably the biggest improvement, there's more gameplay overall and the QTE's are a lot better throughout the game and don't feel as sloppy as it did in the first game, the Somniums are also a big improvement, more to do and new mechanics. The puzzles are also better throughout, they seem more thought out although be warned some of them are fairly difficult. Personal preference on this one but I like the UI design better as well. Characters are a mix bag for AI:N, the majority of the original characters have returned, and they are are still fairly similar to how they were in the first game, although half the game Date is just not as likable as he used to be, but kind of redeems himself at the end (Seriously I wish they gave him more of a heart in this game) The new characters are alright, I'm not all to crazy for any of them, I do like the Masked Woman although her character makes no sense why she even exists, also Tama is great, would love to have seen Tama and Date pair up. Okay the story is where this games really falls short of the first, that's not to say its a bad story but there is way to many inconsistency, especially since this game follows the events of the first AI, if AI:N was a stand alone game I think it would work a lot better, there would still be some inconsistency's but nearly as noticeable, I almost want to believe the dev's were not originally planning on making AI:N when they made the first game because so many things contradict and or seems like last moment idea's to cover up other inconsistency's, I won't spoil anything but a good example is the Masked Woman, I really like her character and her story would be fine if AI:N was its own game, but her existence literally does not make any logical sense in AI:N. The inconsistency's aside, the story overall is still fairly good, It has some really interesting plot twists that within itself has some inconsistency's but looking past that its a really cool way it was pulled off, The 閭。陜カ荵句、「邱ィEND Diverge ending honestly great, (Tokiko is interesting character) Overall I still highly recommend Playing AI:N, however if you haven't play the first game I'd suggest playing that one first, although you don't have to in order to understand AI:N, much better gameplay, just wish the story was on par with the first, also... would be nice to have a 3rd game Spike???
