The only game in the Air Conflicts series that's still completely playable (and still fun!)

Used to play this one as a kid. Overall the experience still holds up, but I´m not sure I´d go around and recommend this to the casual player. The things I like are the soundtrack, the story (even though some of the dialogue delivery is B movie-esque at best), the overall gameplay is solid and I like how it shows aspects of the war that other games don´t show at all, like the war crimes of the Chetniks in Yugoslavia, or the Slovak National Uprising (which is to be expected since the game is made by Slovaks). But some of the missions (especially towards the end of the game) are so bad I can only describe them as digitalized AIDS. Like the one where you have to destroy multiple vehicles of German generals as they´re trying to flee Berlin. Dropping bombs while flying low above narrow streets, and all within an invisible time limit. Or the one where you have to drop a British officer into Berlin while avoiding the searchlights and the Luftwaffe. What frustrated me about that one was that when a Luftwaffe pilot spotted me, I wanted to just break line of sight and continue the mission stealthily, but my tailgunner (being the c*nt that he is), opened fire on the German planes, forcing me to restart the mission, because at that point I was as good as dead. The plane with the tailgunner was also my only option for that mission, so selecting a different one just wasn´t possible. Or the mission where you couldn´t let more than 15 planes get through. That one was broken beyond belief and was genuinely painful to play. Another mission worth mentioning (although nowhere near as bad as the ones mentioned above), was the one where your plane was badly damaged at the end and you had to do an emergency landing. Of course the devs couldn´t be bothered to give me the sacred knowledge on how to do this, so after a couple of crashes to the ground I had to ultimately look it up. Another issue was a particularly big example of bad game design. The game is very story centered, and story is conveyed through this textbox of individual characters speaking during missions. Problem being that when characters are talking, the UI completely disappears. The speedometer disappearing isn´t such a big deal. What is such a big deal is the radar, and more importantly your damage bar (basically your health). This made it really frustrating when two characters were casually chatting nonstop while AA guns were constantly hitting me from the ground and I had no clue how close I was to being blown out of the sky. This also applied to a particular mission where I was being chased by pretty powerful German planes, and upon finishing the dialogue they immediately shot me down (sometimes the dialogue didn´t even finish). I feel like this could have been easily fixed by either having the conversation play out in a cutscene, or making the player invincible for the duration of the dialogue. Other issues are minor but can add to the frustration. Like the sometimes inconsistent checkpoints, the radar not being able co properly convey how far enemy planes are from your plane, time limit ending and failing a mission 10 seconds before it was supposed to and bombs/rockets not hitting targets when they difinitely should have. I know I made it sound really bad now but the overall game is worth playing. To fans of airplane combat games it´s an instant recommend, but to the casual player I can´t quite decide wether I would recommend it or not. Though if it´s on sale for a reasonable price, definitely give it a try.

Air Conflicts: Secret Wars is one of those games that are so obscure, id be surprised if anyone read this review. But as this was a childhood staple for me on the Xbox 360 way back in the day I thought id give it some words. Nostalgia bias aside, this game has definitely not aged well presentation wise, with mission briefings in comic sans font and spelling mistakes. And some missions are either filler and take two minutes to complete (smuggling runs). Or feel so utterly contrived it makes either very little historical/logical sense or just straight up pointless. That being said this game does actually have a story, which punches way above its weight for an arcade flyer from 2011. With chapters in Yugoslavia, Slovakia, Libya among other creative sets from World War 2 that a lot of people don't know happened in real life. But the downside is that combat does get repetitive with only a handful of times the enemy aircraft pose any real difficulty. If you want an interesting flying game to play to pass some time, this is definitely for you. If there was a "mid" review option, this game would definitely fit that criteria. But it's hardly a bad game. 5.5/10
