I really liked the art style and overall vibe of Aka, but I found myself feeling lost a lot of the time while playing. I’d personally give it about a 5/10. The game itself isn’t broken or unfinished, and I can absolutely see someone else really enjoying it, which is why I’m still recommending it. It just didn’t fully click with me gameplay-wise.

"What is sadder than our happy memories?" Oh, a paradox. I did not expect this game to progress with an increasing degree in sentimental notes. I thought it was a cozy (micro-)farming game with some side quests, which it is. Yet, that is just a means, and not the end. The game was set in a post-war period. The eponymous protagonist Aka, a veteran, journeyed back to his homeland where he had little memories of. He aimed to begin his life anew, leaving the tragic war behind, yet in order to do that, he first must confront the ghost of his past. And I mean literal ghosts. Now you can see where this is going. Gameplay-wise, I felt it was almost tedious to me. Almost, because the quests required you to travel back and forth many times. Just to pick up some bread, to get this potion, to give an item, yada-yada. It's bordering on boring. However, content-wise, this game shined like, I don't know, generic metaphor you fill in yourself. There are some times in life where I was met with thanatophobia; those moments returned while playing this game. If that comes out too strong for you, I will put it this way instead: consider this game a memento mori. Especially so if you are someone who are still haunted by your past. Live your live: love as pleased, share marshmallows, give warm hugs. Too many things you must have regretted, but they are all in the past. Make peace with them. Live on. (It is possible--and highly probable--though to argue the storyline is painfully cliched, and I have no rebuttal against that. It's cliched, indeed, but well, it worked. So.. yeah.) I will not comment on the game artstyle because it is sufficiently obvious. Adorable, cozy hand-drawn animals living in pastoral fantasies we all so deeply yearn. Nice.

x-- 6/10 --x Very charming game, however it felt a bit too slow for me. Still good though and I enjoyed it a lot.

I would give this a very positive review as a story-based exploration game with about 10 hours of content. I would not recommend it as a a farming simulator, as this element is not developed very much at all, and mainly supports certain story quests with no incentive to go beyond that. Aka is very unique and I plan to play through it again. It is a 'quality over quantity' game that you won't drop 100 hours into, but the hours you do spend will likely stay with you. I enjoyed it a lot, as I wasn't looking forward to 'another stardew valley' and just wanted to explore the beautiful world of this game and the story-based quests. The back story of the main character is fairly dark; they are essentially an ex-soldier trying to come to grips with the events of the war and with rebuilding a life in a time of peace. The story sections are spare, simple and effective. A lot is said with a little dialogue and evocative imagery. Beyond the scenes from the past, the overall tone is of rebuilding and healing through everyday life and through visiting places of significance and interacting with the characters scattered around. I think if you like the art style you will enjoy this, if it looks 'meh' to you, then you probably won't get much from it. Don't expect an addictive farming sim with levels of skill progression, do expect story and atmosphere.
