Entertaining and well balanced. Between the selection of timed goals that pop up routinely and game-progression goals, the game never feels boring or too routine. Hitting goals doesn't feel stressful or pressured either. Enough of a variety of stuff to do that it's easy to play for a multi-hour stretch without getting bored.
This is one of those games that exposes the flaws in the thumbs up/down system. I'd split this one right down the middle. If I got this for $3 or $4, I'd recommend, but it's so on the fence that with anything but a steep sale, I just can't recommend. There's nothing new after 5 or 6 hours. I left my game open for a long time because I couldn't be bothered to come back to it with how hard the gameplay falls off. I'm giving this a very slight thumbs up, only because the art is lovely and it's a vibe, but buy it on sale.
Torn on this because there's great stuff in this game. But it seems like you're constantly fighting to stay in the green, saving any money is difficult outside of forecasting your income and expenditures vs. labor costs... I don't know it feels way too much like real life. Historically, monasteries and abbeys became these sort of self-sustaining and community-oriented institutions. Then, they became a tiered labor system with recruits being a lower laboring class and upper-level monks being much more of a noble class of monk. "Ale" was brewed far more locally and regularly by alewives (wives of brewers) as hops weren't really common yet. Ale only kept for... two days at most, unless in a cold climate. So the local alewife(s) would hang a branch or cane or something to indicate their batch was ready. People would come by and have their fill and leave. Understand-- I don't expect realism but the way we run the Ale Abbey is not how the Ale Abbey would FEEL. It feels a lot like real life; rushing to meet deadlines, struggling to stay ahead, and most of the pay-offs are ceremonial.
It's okay. The beer system needs reward aging more as it does laagering. The last achievement is just a unnecessary time sink, especially without automation. How I suggest they do automation is allow a certain amount of breweries to be set under management of the Church and the ability to choose how much beer to maintain at a certain locations or to auto accept and complete ale orders. You can have up to ten so I suggest four, so it doesn't completely mitigate gameplay. For late game there needs to be something to sink extra research points in for a bonus to something. The market and competition trophies need a little bit of a change as they don't really affect the way your game IMO there should be at least a few very unique ones I.E. trophy of quantity or quality. Also having to go for cheaper beers to make money rather than high quality is feels kind of meh. Ale orders need to be buffed in general and are really only useful if you need the small fame bonus, but progressing in the market can be achieved way faster by just selling beers. A bit of advice for people when making beers, early game beers I recommend trying to be in the 8-20 cost range, mid game 20-35, and end game don't go above 50. Also Grapes seem to be extremely good at cutting cost as they give a little bit of every stat. Also special traits besides the one that increases price range aren't really worth going for, and for ale for your Ale abbey just do the longest shelf life with the liquid bread trait.
Very cute game, enjoyable for a few hours. (Don't look at my gameplay hours, I leave my games open and walk away.) I would recommend this game for $7.99 (because that's probably how much I bought it for in early access) and while it's possible I've missed something, I haven't seen any drastic change since the full release. Interesting and unique perspective with some cool mechanics around brewing that straddles finnicky to fun. I love games where I passively learn about something in the real world, and this does that for beer! Cute artwork style, easy and chill game you can run while watching tv for sure. Biggest issue is you just run out of things to do after a while and it becomes repetitive. My feedback for the devs would be adding in more upper level mechanics (and decor.) Like opening more abbeys to link together, the ability to host your own contests, maybe you could send your fermentines on adventures for ingredients. Just things to deepen the gameplay, because it is enjoyable, but you do plateau pretty quickly.
