For better or for worse this is the most uncompromising attempt of an homage to classic PSX survival horror I have played so far. A lot of other games have nailed the art style, and the exploration. But no other game is willing to give us genuine, honest to goodness, blood-pressure raising, dpad aim. In a game with pre-rendered graphics no less, that good garbo! This game could be right up on a shelf with Dino Crisis and Fear Effect and it wouldn't look a hair out of place. Enemies are bullet Sponges, Alisa reloads like shes mentally going through a checklist every time, and the monsters will happily stun-lock you to death if you let them. To get through this I had to use tricks so old I forgot I knew them. Like radar aiming, leading monsters into conga lines, or abusing their ai to always put myself just to the side of their attack animation. It's got multiple endings, an absurd amount of unlockables and after the first few times you can beat the game in like an hour cause your a walking armory and 9/10s, of the games critical path is just pissing you about. This game ain't for everyone, but if you read everything I just wrote and like me think that was a glowing review with absolutely no negative points then have fun. This is $18 well spent.

Amazing game, I love it! I beat the game before it had the achievements. So much fun that I was secretly played the whole game while at work on the computer. But no Tank Controls for console versions is a stupid choice on devs part. Considering it's survival horror game with fixed camera angles. Pretty please, add the Tank Controls for the all console versions of the game.

Nostalgia can be a good starting point but for some people, nostalgia is where is starts and ends. I don't mean to sound judgemental but nostalgia can also be consumed by those who weren't actually there and their interpretation is often drawn onto a piece of paper to create a work of art that is only recognized as a work, inspired by that misinterpretation. Alisa however has color-banding on its pre-rendered backgrounds. There's games that I can see and instantly know that it was created last year, inspired by the year of 1996. However, what Casper has created here is a game that at points truly transcends nostalgia and enters the realm of the uncanny. It not only knows the resolutions and controls that those games used to feel like 1996 but it also knows how that tech and controls influenced not only the art direction but the art itself. Alisa is a game that looks like if HUMAN entertainment made a Resident Evil clone instead of Click Tower but plays like Alisa. And that's something you can't get anywhere else but this game.

Do not misunderstand me, I am in love with this game. With its classic PS1 aesthetic, clunky survival horror mechanics, and freaky, weird characters, this game has already captured my heart. But let me warn you: Alisa is HARD AS HELL. This game punishes you so severely that you might not get to enjoy all the things I just mentioned. Aiming is tough because there's no crosshair and on top of that, some monsters move fast and even dodge your attacks. Supplies are scarce, and to buy upgrades or new weapons, you need to kill monsters to earn toothwheels. So while running away is always an option, it often feels like it’s just not worth it. Save points are few and far between, and more than once I died just before reaching one, forcing me to replay the last hour all over again. The clunkiness (just like in any other PS1 era game) makes things even harder. I'll admit, even though I’ve played various survival horror games recently (Crow Country, Tormented Souls, Signalis) I’m still not good at this genre. But that didn’t stop me from enjoying Alisa, because I like this kind of difficulty. That said, if you’re not like me or you’re new to this genre, be cautious. The auto-aim option helps though. (I’m playing with no auto-aim and tank controls by the way... it really tests my patience.) The only thing I didn’t like about this game is the bugs... Other than that, let me marry this game I guess.

Probably the only PSX inspired game that actually feels like a lost title from Playstations catalogue. I don't think there's one indie game out there that has accomplished anything close to the PSX feeling Alisa achieves. That alone makes it worth recommending but the game itself is fantastic.
