1,000 years apart... a single connection... is all it takes. Aliya: Timelink! For a game so narratively focused, I’m—ironically—most impressed by the gameplay; or lack thereof. The void in place of CGs, animations, or sprites, hallmarks of VNs, is such a clever way of instilling atmosphere right from the get-go. It’s meant to feel—and act—like a messaging app; like a text panel in some factory somewhere, buttons and dials galore... each serving a distinct purpose. That importance defines its streamlined nature. The entire UI is essential, abandoning useless clutter for a more intimate and realistic approach, softly contrasting the deep space setting and high-tech randomness. Building on that, Aliya is your single point of reference. Spaceships, extra-terrestrial life, and a surprising number of dead fathers are all blabbered from the same mouth. Plus: CGs—sent as small, fleeting texts—deliciously detach and immerse you in a half-present. Her words are transcribed, her tone is felt through presentation, yet without visual stimulation... there are moments. Airtime. Fiercely, your trust with Aliya is silently limited, as any picture she sends could be angled or altered before being sent. What a wonderful way of leading unease to the players, you barely notice it until afterward... and that’s my favourite thing to analyse! Right, I can hardly leave you hanging, can I? The plot... c’mooon, you know I love it. Being mindful of spoilers here, but information, carried forth from one ending to another—altering the scenario in real time—really sprinkles in the uniqueness Timelink is aiming for. It thrusts the player into a confusing state; uncomfortably distant from Aliya, yet aware their split-second decisions lead to unparalleled impact. Withholding save states forces players to make decisions on-the-go. As an active participant in the narrative, it hits so much harder; the complete absence of pausing, skipping, sets you in the same room as Aliya... a millennium too early. Furthermore, influencing players to actually... stop, and wait for Aliya to message back, marks such a fleeting energy. 3 hours of dialogue. That’s it. But for the player, they’re settled in it so much longer—waiting for 10 minutes, 20 minutes, going to sleep alongside the narrative. You are firmly settled into that world, awaiting the tragedy to come. Adding onto that, I’d be an idiot to ignore the authentic, downright incredible, character writing. Timelink sets out to ground its circumstances, to humanise the unfortunate, cold truth of Aliya into a message that leaves a mark. Naturality is the core of that success, as it—when strewn together with the interface, gameplay, and plot—simmers to an experience defined by its humanity, and the dreadfully relatable feeling of messaging a friend. Overall, I’m over the moon with this title! The narrative it beholds, the bold absence of gameplay, and the profound impact it leaves is... beyond words! I have no faults—if only it were longer... wait, it is! There's an after-story too! Who doesn’t want more slice-of-life space shenanigans? Anywho, Aliya: Timelink is proof that less is more; that impact arrives in the things you'd expect to overlook, yet reminisce on later down the line. 10-out-of-10 my friends!... 10/10.

Aliya: Timelink is not for everyone. I think its narrative targets a very particular demographic. Neither is it a perfect experience. There is a lot of waiting due to the real-time sync mechanic, the translations have their issues, and it is very simplistic in nature. For some people, those qualities will make this a frustrating or boring experience that they cannot engage with. Luckily, I was not one of these people, so the story hit me like a truck. I very nearly cried while playing through the first ending of this game and I can't remember the last time an interactive story made me feel that way. At risk of spoiling the game for anyone who wants to play it, I won't go into heavy detail about why it left such an impact. I can only say that I did not expect to care. Aliya: Timelink was a game I only discovered because of the Steam Points Shop, and I only bought it because it was cheap and looked vaguely interesting. My expectations were surpassed in every way.

One of the best games ive ever played. Only very few games affected me emotionally but this game affected to so much in ways I never thought of. My heart still feels so heavy after the first ending. Never thought I'd cry my heart out. I really miss her, as if she was real. I do hope ending 5 daily chats gets an update soon.

A very sad yet engaging story. If you let this game grip you even for a moment, it has the ability to shake you emotionally. *Left shift to skip if needed
