Reading this slop VN gave me a stiff neck. I like and dislike it for different reasons, but I still can’t unrecommend it because I’m in love with Grace. Finished every route, and for most of the game, it felt more like I had spent hours inside the creators’ personal thought experiment. I like the art direction, the music, and some of the ideas expressed about the protagonist’s life, like how she’s forced into marriage, struggles with depression, and fails to have a single meaningful relationship with anyone. I also really liked the portrayal of her stiff neck, how she keeps ignoring both it and all the problems in her life until everything finally snaps and starts hurting all at once. She’s sick sick fr and needs help. Not just her, all the characters are. Everyone here needs therapy ASAP. But for most of it, the whole thing felt patched together, like a conversation rather than an actual story. If someone were to only do a single playthrough, I genuinely don’t think they’d recommend it, which makes me wonder how so many reviews with low number of hours thought that was enough. It feels essential to do every route to understand everyone’s perspective, yet it’s way too much effort for what often ends up feeling like the same thing over and over again. I’m still not sure about my final opinion on this VN, but I don’t think I’d tell anyone I know to read it. Unfortunately.

The writing in this game is incredible. Some of the lines got me sitting back and thinking about what I just read, they were that good. This is genuinely a fantastic game that explores the complex nature of connecting with other people and how everybody has some weight or 'neck pain' that they're carrying with them. I'm so impressed with how vivid and descriptive the writing is, if the creator(s) are reading this review, I hope you make more games like this! I would genuinely buy a full length book based off this. I found this game purely by accident and it's probably one of the most memorable experiences I got from a game. Definitely recommend this. It's not long, but will stick with you. The setting also gave me Disco Elysium vibes a little bit, which is a big bonus for me at least.

It's short, but it sticks and haunts. Characters in Stiff Neck suffer, and said suffering eventually crushes them, but until then, they set it aside and co-exist with that suffering. Like getting a stiff neck and ignoring it. Very good!
