Dec. 2025
This is a really cute game! I love the concept, perfect for dino nerds (like me). There are unique dinosaur species that I don't often see portrayed in media, which is awesome to see how the studio designed them! It has a really fun routine that can keep you hooked for hours, I was here just shopkeeping for a solid 10 hours one time. Very cozy. That being said, this game can use significant improvements. It desperately needs optimizations. It feels very clunky, for what is a small-medium sized game. Loading assets feels like it takes forever. I know this is an indie debut game, so I do not expect it to be perfect! However, it has been over a year since it has been released (at the time of writing this), and I expect all the bugs and glitches to be fixed by now. It makes me sad because I truly love this game. I have finished the main story, and I want to complete everything (all the achievements and such), it's just so frustrating to handle that I'm not sure I'll pick it back up again. Maybe give it a few months. I wouldn't say I'd recommend this game, I wouldn't say I'd not recommend it, kind of in the middle. If you want a cute dino game and don't care about bugs, go ahead! If you're easily frustrated by things not working, I'd be wary. I do not think it is worth full-price in this state, I got it on sale for what felt more reasonable. This game has a lot of potential that has yet to be taken advantage of. I wish to see it succeed, and I know it can, but I don't think it is possible in this current state. Anyone looking to play - I recommend using a controller. BUG FIXES/QUALITY ISSUES -Desperately needs significant optimizations. It does not run well, and my machine is well-qualified to run hardware-intensive games. Loading the game, loading different areas, loading just the shop, all take way too long. Maybe there's a ton of unused assets? Or maybe it could benefit from pre-loading regions? -When placing homes for Paleofolk, sometimes their houses clip into the textures of the land. -When haggling an item with a Paleofolk, sometimes if I click by too fast, I'll accidentally sell the same item twice. It seems input for haggling does not terminate while the character is still talking. -Some animations don't loop well. There's obvious jumps. I'm not commenting on how well the animations are, I have no judgement for that, but I can clearly see where the animation starts and ends and I don't like that. -When placing items in the store, I wish it would return back to where you were. Like if you place one Large item, then store the rest of the stock, it should go back to that exact spot where I was in the menu. So far, it only does that when I place all of the stock of one item. This sucks! Why does it always default to Medium? -A rare bug I've found is sometimes the menus will just get stuck. When placing anything in the shop, or on the landscapes, it gets stuck on the last page. The only fix I found is restarting the game. I thought my controller was bugging, but even using my mouse to click it didn't do anything. FUTURE FEATURE IDEAS - not necessarily needed, but would be nice to have -Sound effects! I wish there were sound effects in menus! Like on the main menu, switching between the different buttons should have something. Same thing with editing the store or landscapes, there should be a sound when switching between different items. A little "blip" or something. -I wish there was a way to see all existing stock that's already on the sales floor. So I don't accidentally place two of the same item without knowing. I am not at all organized with it lol. -When a character breaks an item in the store, they will sit there for a hot minute not doing anything. I wish they'd go away faster, they might be the last customer and I'm sitting there waiting for them to finish staring at their crimes. This feels like intentional game design which is why it is in features. -I would really love some sort of roomba for the shop. Maybe a really bad one that only cleans a 4-5 square area and is incredibly slow, because that would be funny, but also still encourage the player to keep cleaning. Sometimes I'm at the desk helping 5 people and those footprints pile up so fast, I'm unable to go and clean it and lose out on the cleanliness boost. Could just be a skill issue on my part.

I really wasn't sure I would like this game, especially as I recall the reviews at launch were a little mixed, but I have actually really loved it! There's much more content in terms of story and quests than I expected, and the NPCs each have unique personalities and are, frankly, adorable. I expected the standard gathering, crafting and running the shop loop but there is a little more depth to it without it being overly complicated. You can earn more by adjusting prices, changing stock according to what's trending, decorating your shop optimally etc or you can just... vibe. And honestly vibing through it is totally enough to get by at a decent pace. I see a lot of reviews comparing this to Animal Crossing because of the "villager collecting" aspect but I personally don't think they're similar at all so I wouldn't recommend it as as ACNH replacement - you can't choose your villagers in Amber Isle, and while you can place their homes and decorate the area surrounding them the decorating options are not as in depth, which is all completely fine and works for this game, but I think if someone picked this up thinking it would be like ACNH they will be disappointed. It's also worth noting that although I didn't experience many bugs at all, the ones I did experience were the infamous camera bugs that other reviews mention. I do think the fact these camera bugs exist is not good and should be fixed at over a year after launch, but also they did not ruin my enjoyment. It just meant that occasionally the camera took the scenic route to whatever interaction I was doing. I'd recommend this game if you are looking for a mostly chill (but not completely brain-off) shop sim with cute villagers and you enjoy gathering and crafting. It also played decently on steam deck!

While a little tedious at times, this is a decently fun - if repetitive - cosy game. Admittedly though, it was lacking in some ways, keeping it from feeling extra special. The interactions with other islanders are pretty basic, and their quests often samey. "Gather these items for me", "Craft these items for me", kinda things. But it gets bonus points with me because dinosaurs! The shop mechanics also aren't especially deep, but there's plenty of customisation to unlock, and you can even place items around to decorate the shop and the island. Though they'll pretty much just sit there, non-interactive, and at worst, getting islanders stuck on them while they wander about the island. If you're looking for Animal Crossing with dinosaurs - kinda like what I expected - this isn't that. But if you're just looking to chill with a bunch of cuties, with a simple story, crafting and selling of things, you could do much worse.

Amber Isle is a charming little game about running your shop, crafting your items you sell, managing/restoring a town, and meeting cute humanoid dinosaur like creatures. (Called Paleofolk) First up, I want to speak about other recent feedback. At the time of me buying this game, the reviews were mixed, I think. (Which almost led to me not buying this gem) They reviews are better now, but I still want to point out a few points I found unjust, as they presented certain issues as vastly out of scope or hyperbole. I haven't encountered any major bugs, found nothing game breaking, or something that disturbed the game flow in any critical way. This is a finished game, that has smooth performance, little to no bugs, and is feature complete. So, let me point out: ◦ Some spots are hard to mine/harvest: I found two spots, and those were minimal for resources you don’t easily run out of. Giving it a negative review because of that is just unjust. Walking around to reach the hitboxes takes like a second. A minor annoyance at worst, and nothing critical. ◦ Facial clipping issues. Happens to a few characters, true, but nothing extreme, just something that comes with the art style and the vast cast, with different models and rigs I presume. I find it impressive that the game has such a large cast to begin with. That said, the game might not be perfect, but those few, small issues it got, are superficial. There's a few quality of live things that would be nice to have, but I'll talk about those later. Pros: • The gameplay is very chill, a good time and absolutely stress free. If you are looking for a good time to relax to, this might be it. • The art style is cute, simplistic (which is nothing bad) and straightforward. • Everything makes sense, is coherent and follows the rules of good user experience, giving visual and audio visual feedback. • The music in this game is super fun, playful, chill, and stylistically consistent. I loved it, great work composer! Minor bugs that could need fixing: • Every time you pick up an item during shop editing and send it to the inventory with esc, the cursor jumps down into the item bar. Either when an item is in the current bar below, or isn’t, not sure. • When placing large or small items, and pressing escape to return it into the inventory during shop editing, sets the menu back to medium selection only. This can become a bit annoying when placing lots of different large or small item. Nice to have quality of life stuff that we could need: • Filter options for placing items; by lowest count, by highest count, by price, etc. • Filter by name. • A short confirmation on opening the shop via ‘R’ hotkey. • During shop editing, highlighting which items are ‘hot.’ • Skippable calculations… I lost so many tips because of wasted time on calculation, as in the mean time, other paleofolk created dirt all around the shop. • A summary or explanation for shop layout? Still haven’t figured out how to make a shop layout that is good. Lost a lot of good streaks because of this. • Better Shop Control: Maybe allowing us to place the counter wherever we want? Also, more windows, please? My Summary: Amber Isle is a lovely game with charm, that you can play to relax and calm down. I greatly enjoyed the game, and will continue to do so. It’s full of characters, and a treat for dinosaur fans. Mechanics are straightforward, not overly complicated, and several dialogues made me chuckle. If you like cute artstyles, a bit of humor, enjoy soundtracks, and don't mind a tiny bit of grinding for resources, you'll have a wonderful time in this game. Thank you to the devs for making this game. This really helped me relax and find some comfort in these harsh times.

There are a few reviews saying that this game has bugs, and its true there are a couple things that could make the game run a little more smoothly but overall the game is not only playable but very enjoyable. I ran into the bug where during haggling the character will try to "haggle" the exact same price that you offered, I personally attribute that to the character just being bossy lol. PROS - there is NO STAMINA! this means you can sprint around all day getting materials and not have to wait for cool downs etc. -The characters are super cute and quirky and gaining friendship with them actually benefits you as a player. More money for certain items and more - Even if you spend the whole day just collecting items you can still get 'inspiration' points to make new items, though you do get more inspo points through selling in your shop -Holy moly customization of the shop is amazing ! you can mix and match different themes! -The pacing is very well done, you don't have any time limits or constraints when it comes to running around (most of the map can be accessed by just running from one area to the next no fast travel means no time passes) or selling things in your shop - more than 50 hours in and I just unlocked the ice and desert areas. There is a good spacing between how you unlock areas and how many quests you do. - If you don't know what items you can harvest if you cycle through your tools the materials you can harvest sparkle very obviously so they're easy to find. - Just talking to the characters will raise their friendship levels ! - materials respawn daily CONS - the fixed camera can be your angle or your debil If not angled correctly there are a few areas that are borderline inaccessible ( the two higher levels near the meadow gate if a character is on the walkway up you wont be able to see them unless you pivot the camera directly looking top down on your character) - you have to go inside the main square to put items from your pockets into your storage. (there is one outside so you don't have to go inside your shop but moving from the wilds to the square can skip time) -If you have someone 'hanging out' or following you, when you go to the main square to drop items off into storage they stop following you and sometimes they aren't out and about to get them to follow you again. - The little bodies of water in the beach area can be accessed but only if you walk into them at weird spots (they are meant to be explored, there are items you can pick up in them) The devs needs to fix where the water can be entered from. - This might be a skill issue for my computer specifically but if you go out and have full pockets and still mine resources, the extra materials will stay on the ground for at least one day but if there is too many things on the ground for you to come pick up later the game becomes very very choppy. - The island decorations that you can put in different areas has a TERRIBLE HUD. You have to click and drag (very short distances only) to the other parts of the island. Even if you zoom very far out it still takes a lot of time to move your cursor into other areas. - the design feature also uses escape to put away an item you have selected AND for exiting the design menu, it is VERY frustrating that you take a while to get to a different area and then you accidentally put an item down and when you go to pick it up if you aren't careful you exit the design HUD and have to start over from the meadow. - When in sale mode and you have to keep the shop clean some of the floor patterns make it harder to see muddy footprints and the right click to clean them up sometimes wont clean them even if you're standing directly on top of them and sweeping. This isn't a big deal early on but in later game play it can becomes impossible to get your shop 100% clean quickly. Some footprints also cannot be seen behind sale podiums and the camera cannot be adjusted while in selling mode - Some areas of the map that need to be opened with inspo points are at an angle where even if you adjust the camera is very hard to read how much you need (im looking at you tundra gate) - Sometimes when you harvest materials and have full pockets the materials will "pop" out of whatever you're harvesting and will land in inaccessible spots like on top of houses, under decorations, into water etc. - The bridge in the meadow that goes to the desert area cannot be stood on or crossed for some reason -When placing the homes if you're using WASD controls and accidentally fat finger your keyboard and hit E it will place the house down and you cannot move it again. - The characters really only have 2-3 things that they're programmed to say, which sucks when they're coming in two or three times a day (especially in early game) buying the same 3-4 items and saying the exact same thing over and over. Same with when you greet them. - Giving a gift to a character sometimes they do not say anything at all and there isn't a movement on the friendship bar, they also don't say if they like/dislike what you've given them. - giving a character something that their profile says they would like on their birthday does nothing, and there isn't a dialogue option to tell them happy birth/hatch day. Not sure what the point of adding it if you cant do anything with it. - When you choose your outfit for the game you CAN change your shirt but if you take off your hat and save its gone for good. Things that would be cool if added - if you have a buddy following you and you go to talk to a different character that they acknowledge the other buddy when you talk to them (can make the character relationships/opinions more fleshed out) - Being able to throw parties so you can talk to all of the residents in one place (maybe it costs a certain amount of materials and inspo to unlock parties) You could throw a birth/hatchday party for residents or just for fun. - Being able to make and wear new clothes (maybe also if you gift a clothing item to a resident that they wear it) - fix the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ decorations controls man i wanna decorate but its so annoying to navigate - storage box being able to be accessed in the wilds instead of having to go back to town to dump your pockets - fishing!!!!!!!!!!! that would be so much fun and would be something that could be added as its own little category - Adding what items category and materials used to make it when you hover over it in your inventory or when someone requests a specific category item. Overall, the game hasn't been out very long so there's still a few hiccups but the game plays pretty good and the characters are cute and fun to interact with. I love the game so far and cant wait to see what updates bring!
