Unfortunately quite a big step backwards compared to its predecessor. The missing survival mechanics such as managing light and sanity as well as the generally weaker presentation make it impossible for the game to reach the level of The Dark Descent for me. That is also one of the main reasons why the game rarely feels truly tense. Most enemies are fairly easy to avoid and overall the constant pressure that made the previous game so effective is simply missing here. That being said, I really liked the setting and the designs and some areas were genuinely atmospheric. I especially loved the writing. This mix of poetic and overly dramatic language combined with cold scientific terminology and at times almost vulgar dialogue works surprisingly well and made reading the notes genuinely enjoyable. I also found the story and the whole concept surrounding the machines and experiments quite interesting even though I feel like the game had far more potential. Overall it is definitely not a bad horror game but if you have played the previous title you will quickly notice that a lot of what made it special has unfortunately been lost here.

The story and the ending in this game for me were just 👌 Everyone want the game to be how They think it should be, and this is why all the games are a mess these days. How about You just enjoy the story the developers tried to tell and be thankful You live in an age where You can experience it. A lot of people hate on this title... Sad, very sad.

Despite the lukewarm reception over the years, I ended up enjoying Amnesia A Machine for Pigs far more than I expected almost as much as the original Dark Descent, just in a different way. It shares a lot of the same narrative DNA you play as someone with a fractured memory, slowly uncovering a dark, tangled past that links you directly to the main antagonist. Instead of the medieval and Victorian occult atmosphere of the first game, this one leans heavily into a grimy, oppressive steampunk industrial nightmare made of pipes, furnaces, machinery, and rust. It’s a different flavor of horror, but it works. Going in, my biggest worry was that the game’s tone or themes would be watered down, but it’s still extremely grim sometimes even more disturbing than the original. The central villain is unsettling in a very human way, with a twisted blend of nihilism, fatalism, and a warped savior complex that gives the entire story a sick, fascinating energy. The gameplay changes are a mixed bag. There’s no sanity meter this time, and the encounter design is less frustrating overall monsters feel more manageable and less punishing, though they also appear less frequently, giving the game a more atmospheric, story driven focus rather than constant hide and seek. That narrative push, combined with stronger environmental storytelling, makes progression feel smoother but also means there are fewer moments of improvisational panic that defined the first game. Still, the environmental design, the soundscape, and the oppressive mood all come together beautifully. It may not hit the same heights of mechanical tension as The Dark Descent, but it delivers a compelling, horrifically imaginative journey with its own identity. All in all, it’s a strong and underrated entry in the series.

In terms of design, Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs is inferior in almost every way to its predecessor, The Dark Descent. The resources have been stripped out, the puzzles are dumbed down and underuse the physics system, the initial narrative hook is much weaker, the monster encounters are fewer and less tense, and the use of the journal completely kills pacing. A Machine For Pigs is a deeply flawed game... But, in it's second act, the game completely hooks you. The narrative evolves, and you find yourself incredibly invested in figuring out how to stop the machine and save humanity . A Machine For Pigs takes many missteps, but it is at the end where it is able to reach for something greater than itself, and leave you with one of the most memorable endings I've ever seen in a game. It's short, about 4 hours, and by the end, you'll have found that time sink to be completely worth it to experience this one of a kind story.

Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs is a well made and impressive game with a thorough thematic design and atmosphere. As a horror game it is rather spartan yet brilliant in that it let’s your brain conjure most of its horrors. Unfortunately it comes with a rather numbing effect that makes later parts of the game feel more formulaic and not as scary. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3494853123
