One of the few VR games I can easily recommend to everyone. It runs great, it's an actual game that is fun to play beyond just the novelty of "oh it's fun because it's VR", and doing co-op runs with friends makes it even better. Combat is not just another "hit ragdolls that can't fight back" game like many others out there. Lots of enemy variety, and lots of interesting AI and behaviors to learn to effectively fight everything in every biome. It's actually a lot like Binding of Isaac if it were in VR, at least in terms of how the runs work mechanically. You pick up a ton of interesting perks during runs that can change things up a lot, you find money that can be spent or gambled away in shops to help your odds, you can branch off into different level paths, and runs award points and currencies you can spend on upgrading weapon sets and working through a talent tree for permanent improvements that affect all future runs. There are a ton of other things I couldn't possibly explain without making the review too long. Although it looks pretty simple, the game operates in a way that is pretty polished. It also doesn't nickel and dime you to death with paid DLC like some other VR dungeon crawlers. The current sale price of $14 is an absolute steal for the enjoyment on offer. Along with Alyx, Compound, Underdogs, Moss, and a few others I include Ancient Dungeon in the same "everyone who does PCVR must play this" group. The developers have given us so much already with new weapon classes and new levels, and I hope we even get a few more before they rest on their laurels, because I legitimately get excited and play all over again when content updates drop for this one.
The best roguelite game I have ever played. Everything in this game feels amazing. This game has a lot of mechanics and every weapon feels great.The bosses are pretty easy once you memorize their patterns and what they do, as well as all other enemy types. This game has some really fun upgrades to use, some of which can just make you so overpowered. Every run feels fresh, honestly. Arena mode is great, too. It gets really challenging. The anvil also makes your weapons even better. The game is awesome. Highly recommend, I instantly fell in love with this. Runs great on low-end systems too! I'll go ahead and describe the weapons: Every weapon besides the default one is obtained my collecting pieces on pedestals. These pieces will have a mirror next to them. Weapons come in pairs of two called "armaments." Sword & Knife: Basic sword and a throwing knife. The default beginner weapon. Crossbow & Dagger: Ranged crossbow and close-range dagger. The crossbow has an AOE when you shoot it, like an explosion. When you shoot it, the further you are from the arrow, the longer it takes to recharge. The dagger is pretty self-explanatory. Tome & Wand: Basically a mage class. Your book has 3 orbs that recharge (can be 4 with upgrades from the anvil). You use the tome to shoot those orbs. The orbs also have an AOE, but it's not as large as the crossbow's. When you open your book, you'll see that it has 3 orbs: An orange, green, and blue one. Orange is fire, green is poison, and blue is lightning. Lightning is good for enemy swarms. You can also use your book to attack and push back enemies for a small amount of damage, which absorbs an orb as well. Flail & Bomb: The flail is a basic close-range melee weapon. It's a ball on a chain on a stick. If you smack the ball on the ground it'll have a little explosion effect. You can hold trigger on your controller to suck the ball in and make it more like a stick with a ball on it. The bomb part is where you take the end ball out and throw it as you would a grenade. This bomb can be remotely detonated by pressing the button you would use to put your weapon away (B button on Oculus controllers), or you can just wait for it to explode.
What a great game. Someone could really go deep and make a Umoria or Angband dnd style game like this in VR. Eternity dungeons is not it, getting closer. The way you get upgrades and secret rooms and do climbing is satifying. The graphics are easy to digest and colorful. I feel I've got my 30 dollars worth out of this game and more. I can't run ambient occlusion well enough to use it on my older system. The shading is very nice and better then the ps5 version of the game which I also own. Very much reccomended.
