Story + Setting: The game feels like a 2025 modern scenario in an ancient setting, in the sense that some characters act very modern and lighthearted, while others act serious like you would expect it from a roman procurator. Unfortunately, modern plus ancient does not work very well together. It becomes very grotesque when you are the governor with a legion, archers, and battle ships loaded with Ballistas, ready to take over Albion by force and then Diana appears with her anime voice like "hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii, could you plz deliver these 50 love letters for me?". Bitch, I'm trying to take over Britain, go fuck off. The writing is simply horrible, and it's not even funny like in Anno 1800, where the artisans were dramatic comedians and engineers were sarcastic feminists. All NPCs in this game are flat as hell, don't act Roman at all, and have no edges. They are what you expect a 7th grader to produce when they use an LLM for their homework. Idk if Ubisoft used AI for their writing, but if they didn't, they hired the worst writers they could find. The game has an identity crisis on whether it wants to be serious or playful. Even if we, as the player, decide for one thing, e.g. have a strict administration, the game will challenge that decision with stupid dialogues every few minutes. It's also true vice versa: if I want to have a true funny/playful game, the bandits will be dead serious which doesn't fit to the rest at all. I know that Anno always had a light humorous tone, and was never historical accurate, but this game is simply inconsistent in that regard, and I find this identity crisis terrible. --- Gameplay: That's my opinion on the "story stuff around", the core gameplay is great! They improved on many things, especially the pacing which is my biggest plus. You can now play multiplayer without ever feeling the need to skip time (not that you can do that anyway, but the devs says they will deliver time skip at a later time). Unlike in Anno 1800 you never have idle time, there is always something to do. Also, it doesn't take ships 40 minutes to go from A to B, which was the case in 1800 even with steam ships. Great improvement imo! 45° buildings + streets make beauty building enjoyable easier, is fun to use with farms and is overall a great addition. Production lines are reaching the complexity of 1800's base game, and this sets a great foundation for future DLC. Building aqueducts is great, they look great, they make sense (water physics! you have to build from mountains to valleys, so the water can flow downstream), they are simply fun a fitting version of trains in 1800. The building system is great as always, with good improvements like automatic clamping of buildings, automatic street circling around buildings (although sometimes buildings and streets clamp to the wrong spots and you can only fix that by using "shift" which temporarily disables clamping -- the key bind is unfortunately not mentioned anywhere except the keybind menu. Took me a while to find it.) The building menu is improved as well, although I would like to have a bigger hot bar which decreased from 10 to 5 for no reason. Now I need more clicks to manage my ships, compared to 1800. Religion has no big impact, but maybe future DLC builds on top of this mechanic. For whatever reason they decided to add another cooldown to quests. So, you can only do one quest of an NPC and then have to wait 15 minutes. Meh. Overall I am recommending this game, because the core gameplay is a solid 9/10, and albeit the poor writing and some annoying characters, I am having a lot of fun and I'm looking towards the DLC. Maybe they can improve their writing for DLC and make it respect whether we want to rule with an iron fist, or like in a slice of life anime. ^_^ Edit: also, for the love of god, please show me the stats of fire safety, happiness etc when I have to make decisions based on these stats for quests.

As you can see from some reviews some people will just cry that a game is a copy of a game that came before it. Yes Anno is still Anno...obviously. Somehow this surprises people. It's also about a 20 second wait for the Ubi launcher the first time you launch the game so these complaints not recommending the game are a bit nonsensical to me. Heres a list of good changes imo. There's a surprising amount -This is a step up graphically. Anno 1800 looked great, this just adds a bit more weather and atmosphere. The building models and maps are more detailed but things like character models are a significant upgrade. -Performance has mostly been a locked 60 with high/very high, raytraced shadows, and DLSS on balanced/quality. I run a 4080 with a R7 9700x and 32gb DDR5 @ stock speeds. I have a 35 inch 3440x1440p monitor so I was very happy with this. When I turned raytracing off and unlocked the frame rate I was getting 100fps in my small town. There was way too much screen tearing without it locked though so I went back. -They introduce the game mechanics quite a bit better this time around. New players will have an easier time with this. Small things like game tips popping up in a silent visible notification on the top left of the screen instead of most games where tutorial tips are literally forced on you and often pause the game. This allows some learning at your own pace if you're new. -This has a much more fleshed out combat and military system which was needed. Actual ground combat was a welcome surprise. I'm excited to be able to play a military RTS, city builder, and logistics simulator all in one game. There's actual varied mechanics to the individual ships and units which is cool to see. - You can now build more unique cities. The ability to build curved roads and rotate buildings at a 45 degree angle adds quite a bit to the variety surprisingly. - I didn't think I would care for yet another historical setting but thay manage to make their take on the roman era interesting. I do hope the next title is something completely different though. I'm salavating at the idea of a 1950's Soviet/US era or something that's a fresh take for the series. -This launched with more standalone items compared to 1800 if I'm remembering correctly. Decently cool statues and ornaments. -This developer is great with UI and this game improved on the already good UI in the previous game -Added a religion mechanic with varied interesting options -The story is halfway intriguing so far, which was not expected. I saw some negative reviews that called it "woke" which is just hysterical/sad to me. -They've kept some quality of life stuff introduced as dlc in the previous game. -Added a research progression tree with three main varied subcategories that will allow rushing certain builds/playstyles which gives you a much more varied playthrough if you want to start fresh. This tree impressed me because it determines pretty impactful changes that can alter a playthrough. -They added a brush tool that allows you to brush over buildings to change the look of them which adds to the city building element even more. Overall, I think this is in an excellent spot. It adds meaningful and welcome changes to the formula without removing core elements that make Anno the series it is. They're doing a lot with this game and I'm looking forward to seeing what they can do with it in the coming years.

Those complaining about Ubi-Connect 3rd party launcher, I get it, I don't like additional layers of effort to just play a game, I hate it in fact, but, the game is great, runs great, it's a very streamlined approach, but not so overly simple that it takes the strategy out of the game. Input and UI work great whether I use a controller on the big screen (I love being able to kickback with a controller), or mouse and keyboard. I am enjoying what little I've played and had to throw my 2 cents in when I saw the review bombing for Ubisofts stupid launcher...look, Ubi you really need to just step out of the way and let people play through their storefront or platform of choice. If we wanted to play through the Ubi app, we would have purchased the game through the Ubi app. We didn't, that should be enough of a clue to ditch the additional aggravation of having to launch a game, that launches your launcher, that then launches the Game! The game is good, so if you can overlook the annoyance you will enjoy once you get there.

I've never played an Anno game before, so I went in with no expectations. I'm enjoying the game more than I thought I would. The building system is nice, not overly complicated at this point, but complex enough to cause a healthy amount of confusion that can be solved by just slowing down and taking your time to plan out the buildings. The presentation is also very pretty, the controls are nice, information is mostly relayed in an understandable way. No bugs yet, no complaints, and the Ubisoft aspect is not only fine, but I barely even noticed. As much as refunding would save my wallet and time, unfortunately I enjoyed it a lot, and time flew by quickly playing it. It's a nice packaged experience so far that I'd recommend to fellow newcomers.

Initial thoughts are this game is exactly what most Anno fans will want, same gameplay as before but with tones of new and additional features that still keep it feeling fresh.
