It was great and I liked it a lot. What is it about though? Accelerationism? Peter Thiel? Hyperreality and simulacrums? I guess I understood the history aspect. Am I an idiot? Maybe.

I don't usually write reviews for games but this one really struck a chord with me. For a "horror" game, It's dreamlike nature was awfully cozy, like watching an crappy kids show on a crappy tv at 11:00pm on a school night. Anthology feels so off but so right at the same time, you just can't help but enter the next "of the killer" excited and filled with a strange feeling of being buzzed. i thoroughly enjoy and love this weird little game and i will forever hold it very dear to me. 3/9 borts

Godspeed, BB. Easily the best run of episodic storytelling I've had the pleasure of experiencing. Sometimes a bad story masquerades as a good story long enough to draw you in and slowly reveals its inner vacuity — the first season of True Detective and the entirety of Death Note are archetypal examples of this. Anthology of the Killer is very much not the opposite: it has no misses. Even its early and less ambitious installments are amusing, odd little mood pieces, and if that was all Anthology had ever been, it still would've been great. But I'm compelled to compare it to the media that has disappointed me because it does what they couldn't: it reveals, over the course of its nine installments, more and more reasons to adore its world and characters, more layers to its writing, more cause for excitement, more undeniable ambition, until I was playing the final part and gripped with anxiety that the landing would not be stuck, that I had been here before, that maybe something stupid would happen like killing off BB. Nope. In fact I loved the ending. To bring such a sprawling mess of a series to a close without too much being lost in the scramble ( though I wish BB's friends had croaked in a slightly less perfunctory manner, I can't say it doesn't fit the game's mood ) deserves more praise than I can give. The least I can do is find a third platform to buy these games on. So why should you play these games? Well, if you like: [*]Plucky wise-cracking female protagonists who you can never quite tell if she understands the stakes or not [*]Critical theory as an engine of horror as an engine of comedy [*]A growing sense that Dark Hegel has, once again, crept up on you [*]The idea of Thomas Ligotti with a more childish sense of humour [*]Games that are good instead of bad Then you should be fine. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to play them all again. One final thought, because it bears pointing out: what happens in these games is ridiculous and nonsensical, and all the carnage and death these games attribute to History reveals no intelligible structure. This is seriousness as unseriousness, and it is a point worth making, for the stakes are as high as it gets. Long before he went mad and even longer before he became a Nazi, Nick Land wrote: "Suffering must be obviously futile if it is to be 'educational'. It is for this reason that our history is so unintelligible, and indeed, nothing that was true has ever made sense." Anthology is keen to teach a similar lesson, but with a preference for laughter over tears: we have been sold the lie that "we" are "going somewhere", "building the future", becoming more civilized and more reasonable all the time. If a world where senseless murder and conspiracy against the human race seems too absurd to be making a point — perhaps you're just not paying enough attention.

Shortform horror with insanely clever writing, oozing personality. Each story felt so dense in its ideas/themes/criticisms despite being presented in the form of seemingly effortless jokes, I had to play in short bursts so I could process for a bit. Just excellent
