Short, sad and sweet at the same time, decent difficulty for the puzzles, a platformer you have to play trough at least once. make sure you have a decent controller to enjoy it even more.

Arise: A Simple Story is one of those rare games that proves you don’t need dialogue or complex mechanics to tell a powerful story. The entire experience is a quiet, emotional journey through the memories of a man’s life, and it’s told in such a beautiful and thoughtful way that it stays with you long after you finish it. The core gameplay revolves around controlling time. You move forward and backward through moments to solve environmental puzzles and progress through memories. At first it seems simple, but the way the game uses time manipulation to represent emotions, relationships, and life events is incredibly creative. Visually, the game is stunning. Each memory has its own unique environment and mood, from warm nostalgic landscapes to darker, more difficult moments. The art style feels like a living painting, and the lighting and colors perfectly match the emotional tone of each chapter. The soundtrack deserves special praise as well. It quietly guides the experience and enhances the emotional weight of the story without ever feeling overwhelming. The game is not very long, but that works in its favor. It tells its story without filler, keeping the experience meaningful from beginning to end. Some puzzles can be a little clunky due to camera angles, but it never takes away from the overall journey. If you enjoy story-driven games and emotional experiences, Arise: A Simple Story is absolutely worth playing. It’s not about challenge or action—it’s about reflection, love, loss, and the memories that define a life. First the bad: 30 mins into the game I was certain this would be a bad review. Simply put, I had to be a ninja to beat this game considering the fact there are a lot of times you need more than 3 simultaneous inputs and my old keyboard can`t handle that. There is no way to do button remapping and no "better with a controller" warning so I had to do frame perfect inputs in order to jump diagonally while climbing. Hope they fix this. Thaaaat being said, I can't in my right mind thumbs down this game. It delivers what it promises, a simple story. You can see the care they've put into it and the gameplay, even if simple, matches the story being told through and through. Good example of simple gameplay elements that make you feel inside the story, not just watching it. Will be checking out what else the studio comes up with. This game is definitely worth a look, if you don't have any disabilities that prevent you from playing it.

Here is another minimalist emotional indie adventure game. Many games like this have been made, and I've only played a few of them, but I've usually enjoyed them. Arise is no exception. My enjoyment was enhanced by viewing the game with my virtual reality headset. The UEVR injector works like a charm with this game's simplified art-style, avoiding the dire performance woes of the more photo-real looking games. The Spaniards who made Arise knew how to pull of some very nice and creative visual effects with the Unreal Engine 4. The gameplay continuously morphs and evolves throughout the game, with most levels having a new mechanic that interacts with the main mechanic: moving time forwards and backwards. These are used to solve puzzles and to do the platforming. I had some frustrating moments with the controls that made for aggravating platforming deaths, but the checkpoints are placed very frequently. I finished the game in five or six hours, but I went back to replay each level to do the challenge achievements. I replayed it on my monitor, which allowed me to confirm what I had suspected during my first playthrough in VR: the camera moves along predefined paths and angles. The player is not supposed to have direct control over the camera. I was kind of cheating on finding the collectibles because I could freely move my head and look all around the levels. Subtract 1 from my Perfect Games count if you think this was cheating. The story here is indeed simple, so there's no need for me to talk about it much. I just don't like it when stories pretend like a couple can only ever conceive one child, and if that one dies, it's all over. Genetic Death Has Come. Since that is how this story ends, whatever emotions we felt during the journey are pointless. This married couple chose to live as hermits. They die and leave no legacy that endures beyond their isolated, self-centered little lives. A better story could have been found in struggles of the the migrating tribes, but that would probably have been a complicated story. I looked at what else the developer, Piccolo Studio, has made. "After Us" is a game that takes place in a setting I absolutely despise: "Explore the corners of a surrealistic post-human world to give life on Earth a second chance in this touching story about sacrifice and hope." https://store.steampowered.com/app/1406810/After_Us/ I've explained why I hate the concept of "post-human" settings in other Steam reviews and I won't digress into it here. But I may still buy After Us as more fodder for UEVR. I trust these developers to deliver on interesting puzzle/platformer gameplay and wonderous visuals with Unreal Engine 4.

There are no endless dialogues, no fierce battles, just a story painted with colors, seasons, and music. The world feels like a living sketchbook. Each chapter carries its own mood: running through sunlit meadows one moment, stumbling through the cold darkness of grief the next. The soundtrack is more than background, it’s a voice for emotions you can’t quite express yourself. Arise is less a game and more an experience, an invitation to relive, not to win. If you’re ready to play not for victory, but for remembrance, then this is the story you’ll want to step into.
