When the first version (Exile I) was around, Baldur's Gate seemed like the latest and greatest in RPG video game technology, while Exile was the ugly, lesser-known but just as high-quality in terms of content: story, gameplay, nuts and bolts of being an RPG. Today, both games have had remasters to keep them playable, and the passing of time has been an equalizer. Baldur's Gate still has the massively better interface and visual design, but I now see them as occupying the same league: 2D RPG so dated that the difference between the two doesn't matter. Avernum is huge, and yet, every quest feels relevant to the overall concept. The game isn't full of extra noise. It's honestly slim, except for all the junk items. (I think he experiments with nixing those like 20 years later lol) We don't have gratuitous complexity of weapons, spells, skills, playable characters, etc, that Baldur's Gate has. So perhaps BG is more replayable, but who has time for that? In either series there's all these sequels to get through, so wouldn't you rather be moving ahead? I prefer the slimness here. While again, it still makes for an enormous game. That the author of these dozens of games hasn't made a billion dollars is a sad fact that is downright uninspiring for anyone who fancies making their own games. So let's assume he's a nutcase who's bad at business or something. Even if he's not, it would be an easier pill to swallow than that the hardest working dude around, with basically ideal results, is scraping by.

Believe it or not, I bought this game almost 10 years ago on a whim. I played it for about a week, and walked away distracted by "something else". (There's ALWAYS 'something else'...) Anyway, came back yesterday to play something 'new'... and opened this.... 15.7 hours later, wow.... did I really just invest that much time --- in one day --- to an old school 90's style 2D game?????? Avernum doesn't hold your hand much. It's a good dungeon crawler with some nice adventuring and a messy story that can be largely ignored. Yes, you are going to grind here.... what dungeon game doesn't require that???? But the game doesn't pull punches and you're gonna love the save button. Death won't simply put you back at your bed, snug in your home, with all your belongings being new guarded by a creeper or skeleton. This is a learn, live or die game, and you really need to keep with it. I do recommend getting it. It's old, so it's on sale often. But it's totally worth the investment. Graphics are everything you'd expect from a 2012 game based on a 1990's play-style. It's not gonna be a memory hog like Elder Scrolls Online (Find my review.... it took 56 hours to download and jump through their hoops just to play it once.) you could probably install it on your grandfather's old Compaq and never have a problem. If you want a pure dose of nostalgic game play..... this is for you. Now, I need to get back and see if I can top my 15.7 hour run from yesterday. There's another settlement that needs my help.... oh, wait, wrong game. This one's more *ahem* relaxing.

Good game but kind of a slog. By the end of the game, enemies resist like 80% of all of your damage and battles just take a long time. Spellcasters end up being kings of damage as they can unleash large and powerful spells. Really the end game just became me spamming the same 2-3 spells every fight just to get it over with. I think overall though I enjoyed it.

This is a great game to scratch your CRPG itch. It doesn't require too much brain power and it's very cozy. A charming graphics style with a compelling story supported by mostly utilitarian dialogue. The focus here is on dungeon diving, going on quests, learning spells, killing enemies, etc. The story is definitely interesting, and the factions have cool ideas going on with characters that feel unique. I really liked the dangerous feeling world that the game drops you in. The game tells you that you're going into a dangerous and hostile world, then you feel it. You need to think about what your best course of action is going to be to overcome the odds: searching for easier quests to do so you can tackle the harder ones, or searching for a sage who can teach you a spell important to stand a chance at a certain dungeon. I really enjoyed this "make your own way" structure of the game. I beat the game on Hard but I don't really recommend it. Difficulty in this game is basically just scaling the enemies' health and damage, which is a lame cop out form of difficulty to me. It can make the combat tedious and overly time consuming. I will be playing more Spiderweb Software games but on the Normal difficulty. Overall this was a great game to get immersed into and relax with. You're not going to get overwhelmed with pages of stats and abilities, but you aren't gonna be allowed to sleep at the wheel either. Recommend to people who love CRPGs and/or want to scratch that fantasy, old-school CRPG itch. Spiderweb seems to have plenty of games for this purpose.

I'm still suffering PTSD from this game as I'm writing this, completing a two-week intense playthrough. Don't let the cute graphics fool you, this game is not for the faint of heart: it is a long and difficult slog, which I think would be fair to describe as a tactical RPG. It is only made that much more difficult as some of the rules are opaque and everything is almost too simple and straightforward. In addition to challenging combat, the game creates and develops an immersive subterranean world, full of detail and cheer despite the darkness of the subject matter and the limited assets on display. There's basically two-three tiling of walls in the entire game, yet with these the developers have managed to infuse significant personality and character to each of the locales you visit. It even gives some character to some fetch quests! Only really recommended for resilient players who don't mind some tedium and repetition (or, like me, dirty cheaters). It might have had to do with the manner of my playthrough, but it feels like the game is a tad too long and overstays its welcome. The charm of the world makes it difficult though to approach it in small doses.
