Autistic as hell, but nevertheless, a great RPG. If You like: - a unique setting, where there is a living community of people banished to endless caverns, without the daylight, - a great, epic story - sometimes cliche, sometimes refreshing, never boring, - an old-school RPG system, where nothing holds Your hand, and don't particulary care about: - slow paced fights, - extreamly outdated graphics, - long, slow cooking story, then You'll have lots of fun with this game. Just stay on normal difficulty, otherwise the fights will take ages, if You don't pursue an optimised build.
SHORT REVIEW Avernum 2 Crystal Souls is an old school cRPG and the second game in a series. Its an isometric game and the graphics and sound may be basic but the plot, characters and dialogue are great. PLOT: Good to very good. GAMEPLAY: Pretty much a dungeon crawl with a turn based combat system. DIFFICULTY: Reasonable in my opinion although I played on the default “normal” setting and I didn't try the harder difficulty settings. As with other Spiderweb games there is bit of a nasty difficulty spike near the end on some of the final quests. GRAPHICS & SOUND: Graphics: Basic. Sound: Poor. REPLAY VALUE: There is very little replay value in this game as you can do everything in one play though and there isn't really any branching in the plot. My personal advice would the to play another Spiderweb game instead rather than replaying the same one, there's plenty to be going at. ISSUES AND BUGS: None. The game itself works “straight out of the box” with no messing around and appears to be completely bug free. It can be a little fickle with unlocking the game completion achievement at the end. ACHIEVEMENTS AND TRADING CARDS: Partial integration with Steam Platform. Steam achievements for those interested but no trading cards. VALUE FOR MONEY: Excellent. These games aren't expensive and there is 60+ hours of gameplay here. LONG REVIEW Welcome to Spiderweb Software. Please leave your sanity at the door. Spiderweb Software is an independent video game developer founded in 1994 by Jeff Vogel in Seattle, Washington. It is basically a two man band (well one man and one woman) being Jeff who does the programming and his wife Mariann Krizsan who does everything else which translates to all website maintenance, customer support, testing, and whatever design work is kicking around. Avernum 2 Crystal Souls is an old school cRPG and the second game in a series set 10 years after the first game. Its not necessary to have played the first game as it is a stand alone plot but there are plenty of returning locations and NPCs in the game. Its an isometric game and visually and audibly, the game is nothing to write home about, the only music is on the title screen and if you play multiple Spiderweb games the are a lot of recycled graphics and sound effects. Being the work of a one man band this is understandable, they are functional enough not to detract from or get in the way of the game and do not interfere with the gameplay. Where these games do stand out is the writing. There is a detailed setting, varied NPCs and a strong plot narrative. As it's not voiced it does require some reading but not the level of some games. Through most of the game the difficulty is challenging but not obscene. The same cannot be said for the final encounters where the combat mechanics are utterly screwed. In one encounter in particular its okay for the first 8-9 rounds but then the boss's damage output suddenly becomes astronomical and even with 80-85% defence and invulnerability it can one shot your entire party. Although it appears to pretty much bug free but can be a little fickle with unlocking the game completion achievement at the end. I had to re-run the final fight a second time to get that one to unlock.
Been a long time coming, those games are simply perfect at being sprawling adventures in grim conditions, some jank included. The way you revisit the map with the empire invasion is really neat, and a lot of nods to the previous game will make you smile. The many secrets and dungeons are rarely a let down, and honestly I don't really know how to describe it, it's an experience you live if you can handle oldschool CRPG. Play smart and you can avoid some tough fights. This is Avernum!
