I'm Latvian. This plays a little bit like a broken heart. The final cutscene with her climbing the fire up with the sparks into the sky made me cry. Oh I hope the Calamity will be over soon. Oh but the horror of all of this time. Slava Ukraini

A wonderful window into Ukrainian culture with pleasant visuals and nice atmosphere. It's a walking simulator so not much in terms of gameplay. Overall a great experience for one evening.

Fantastic, cozy little game. Really enjoyed all the cultural references and learning more about Ukrainian village life. Really helps you get in touch with your roots) The only thing I would add is that the English translation needs a bit of work. Otherwise amazing! Looking forward to more updates! Слава Україні!

Just as description says, this is a short game divided by even shorter chapters. What I liked best here it that it does have backstory as the character you're playing as is familiar with every house and will give a brief description of a bunch of stuff you find as well as some insights onto people who used to live there. This is a story of home in so many ways, it's a story of loss and grief but also one of hope. In a simpler terms think tidying up sim with a backstory. Have you ever wandered lonely through the woods? And everything it feels just as it should You're part of a life there, you're part of something good If you've ever wandered lonely through the woods Brandi Carlile - Have You Ever (and the next quote too) Now I have to admit I'm probably biased as I spent most of my holidays\summer vacations in a small village not unlike this one when I was a kid, so this game was both nostalgic and familiar to me hence why I can't say how it would feel to those unfamiliar with tiny village life and\or Ukrainian culture. I can say it's not overwhelming and not in your face lore-wise, the message is simple and should be comprehensible regardless. It's just hard for me to go deeper into the story without either spoiling it or projecting too much so I'll just leave it be, there's other stuff I want to note anyway. You can see the graphics for yourself, it's simple but it didn't bother me and the game ran smoothly. The sounds however were marvelous. Nothing over the top but they set the atmosphere really well: fire cracking, floorboards creaking, chickens clucking, MC munching on an apple - simple, small things that really helped solidify the experience for me. There's also a radio in one chapter you can listen to and that was a tad too quiet for my liking. But also adding every song it played in the credits is much appreciated. The gameplay itself is easy, I had some trouble finding last 3 sneaky collectibles and it's a tad hard to wander too far as the game just teleports you back, wasting time every time you get off track while still placing some of those collectible items too far out of your way to find with ease. Still you can replay any chapter from the main menu and even if you don't finish it a second time and exit the collectibles register and stay, achievements work that way too so it's rather easy to complete the game 100% if you're after that. There is also an "I'm stuck" button on the pause screen that teleports you back if you're indeed stuck and while there's no clear hints or clues as to what to look for there's an explanatory text of what tool you need to find to fix this and that and also clicking on the firewood can point to the area you need to examine more. Don't think this game needs anything more that that, really, it's a walk in the park as is. Have you ever stared into a starry sky? Lyin' on your back, you're askin' why? What's the purpose, I wonder, who am I? If you've ever stared into a starry sky Oh, the translation is pretty solid. Some minor stuff here and there but nothing big, easy to read and understand (I played both Ukrainian and English versions, hence why twice the actual playtime). Overall I craved a game like this one for a while and I was pretty sure Back to Hearth will make the cut way back when the demo dropped and I'm not disappointed in the slightest. If you enjoy walking sims, appreciate putting stuff in it's place and don't mind an emotional story this should be perfect.

A small, sad game that gives hope. You have to play it to understand Ukrainians now and in the past.
