The original Backyard Baseball was my first video game ever. I've spent many hours playing this on the family PC as a kid, trying to take my favorite backyard kids to the championship. Now that I'm older and playing this on my own laptop, I'm pleased to say the game still holds up after nearly 30 years. Part of what makes Backyard Baseball good is that it's just fun to play. The controls for hitting and pitching are simple and intuitive. It's easy to pick up after a few minutes spent playing. Fielding is similarly straightforward, even if the execution is iffy at times. I have had a few instances where I guided my character to where I thought they would be right under a fly ball only to see it bounce on the ground right next to them. I do appreciate that you see the entire field when a ball is put into play, though. Many baseball games only give you a view of part of the field at a time. I also like the power-ups you can acquire during games. Throwing more strikeouts will earn you special pitches like an ultra-fast fireball, a zig-zag ball, a ball that freezes just before crossing the plate, and several others. Hitting these special pitches will earn you some powerful hits such as the Undergrounder or the Aluminum Power Bat, the latter of which is essentially an automatic home run if you connect with it. Sadly, there's no option to turn these off in-game for those who want to play a more straightforward game of baseball. I personally don't mind playing with them, it is just odd that such an option is not present considering all the other ways the game gives you to tailor the gameplay experience to your liking. The other aspect of Backyard Baseball that holds up is its cast of characters. There are 30 kids available to play with in the game, and each one has their own strengths and weaknesses. It is fun to parse though those capabilities when choosing which kids to add to your team. You have the handful of characters who are statistically great at nearly every aspect of the game (like the secret weapon Pablo Sanchez. for example), but it can still be fun to build around even characters who lack the raw statistical prowess (like the prim and proper Jorge Garcia). The varied personalities and appearances of each character reinforces this fun. That leads into another element of what makes Backyard Baseball great, its charm. From the main menu set inside the treehouse to the different fields you can play on, the game oozes with style everywhere you look. That extends to the characters themselves with their own unique designs, theme songs, and animations. The sound design is great overall. I've already mentioned the music, but the commentary and background chatter during games adds to the atmosphere as well. Some of the lines can be repetitive, but you can always turn off the voices if it gets too grating. The only area where this iteration of Backyard Baseball doesn't hold up is its game modes. There's only two main modes: Exhibition and Season Play. Exhibition is a single game against the CPU. You pick a team logo and color, draft players with the CPU, and play ball on the field of your choosing. Season Play is a little more involved. You pick your team and take them through a schedule of games, hopefully winning the playoffs at the end. I like the stat tracking in this mode. Your team's performance is tracked across every game, and you can view the league leaders in various categories. These modes, along with a simple training mode, are all you get. There's no home run derby or other mini-games, or any form of multiplayer. While it may not take you too long to see everything this game has to offer, you will at least have fun your entire time doing so. For $10, this iteration of Backyard Baseball is worth picking up if you're interested in seeing where this series began, or you have personal nostalgia with this specific installment (like me). Of course, the 2001 edition of Backyard Baseball is also available on Steam, and I recommend that version a bit more if only because it offers more playable characters. That said, the 1997 version is still fun, and it will keep you busy until the new entry in the series arrives on July 9th. -Review written June 28, 2026-
I have literally never been interested in baseball in my entire life, but after playing this game, I'm obsessed. I had no idea baseball was this deep, I felt like a soccer mom. 10/10 game, would play again, loved losing my voice after screaming at a game made for 4 year olds, very addicting
This game, despite it being a game from almost 30 years ago, still holds up. This game actually looks like it was made way more recently, and with 30 of the iconic kids, there's always one you can just pick as your favorite. and with the new game coming out in July, this game is great for newcomers, and adults now who grew up with it. If you have a spare $10, and are looking forward to the new game, its amazing as a first step and nostalgic trip into the franchise. I always liked '97 over '01 mainly because I didn't really care about the MLB players, and this game is why we all care about it now. (W PABLO SANCHEZ)
