It's a decent game, but way more linear and basic than I expected. It's basically a set of maps you gotta explore (which is the best part) with some amount of money grinding in the pawn shop in between. There isn't really any procedural gameplay here, outside of random item spawns when revisiting locations. There's also not really a lot of upgrades and systems beyond just collect and sell items. For example the pawn shop - you can unlock new shelves (and change their skins) and customize interior walls and floor. That's it. Cannot customize exterior of your dilapidated house, cannot customize walls/floor of your own room. There's no way to get more shop customers per turn, you cannot hire someone to do the selling for you, so in the late game it becomes a massive chore when you got 100+ items to sell, and you get 1-3 customers per 30 seconds or whatever it is. You can repair stuff, assemble stuff and clean stuff, but all of these systems are very barebones, so it becomes boring after doing it two times. I expected a lot more "bid wars" type content, and while bidding on stuff is here, it is also very shallow and basically scripted. Basically amounts to some maps being locked behind a "get X amount of money to win the bid" check. So there's no thinking required in this game, its just collect and sell. Finally, there's plenty of gross out "humor" and horrible mouse smoothing that seemingly cannot be disabled.
If you ever loved watching Storage Wars, Barn Finders might be right up your alley. You explore abandoned barns, houses and other locations, looking for anything worth taking home. Some things are complete junk, while others can be cleaned up, repaired and sold for a nice profit. It can get a little repetitive after a while, apart from that the game worked fine for me. Overall, a decent game for when you just want to relax. I also recommend buying it when it's on sale and not for the full price.
Buying a storage unit always feels like a gamble. Most of the time it's just piles of junk, but every now and then you find something that makes the whole trip worth it. Cleaning everything up and slowly uncovering valuable items is surprisingly satisfying, even if the gameplay starts repeating itself after a while. I just wish there was a bit more variety because the idea behind the game is genuinely fun.
I went into Barn Finders fully expecting chaos after reading all the reviews about glitches. Honestly, I was braced for my character to fall through the floor, explode into pixels, or get booted into space. But nope, I played the whole game and every DLC, and it all behaved surprisingly well. I sunk 24 hours into rummaging through barns, hoarding junk, and unlocking every achievement like the over committed gremlin I am. A word of warning though: do not smash everything in sight. I know, I know it’s tempting. But some of those random objects are actually essential for reaching higher spots. Destroy them too early and you’ll be stuck staring up at unreachable loot like a sad raccoon. Looking at you, Knuckles’ Barn. The annoying bit? You can’t restart a level until you’ve finished it, so if you mess up, congratulations, you’re living with your choices. And if you miss the golden toilet paper at a Bid Wars auction, tough luck, you can’t go back for it. Verdict: 6/10 not brilliant, but definitely barn worthy.
