tl;dr (spoiler free) i was broke in 2011 — found this game through TotalBiscuit's first impressions and pirated it before the video was over. in 2025 i am less broke — this becomes the first game in my Steam library that i 100%ed. i loved it then and i love it even more now due to my better understanding of storytelling and design. it offers stellar world building, stunning visuals, tight action, varied combat, superb audio and perfect pacing. the bottom line — it's great, man. supergiant's first is a forever masterpiece. play it! blabbering (spoiler unfree) a truly unique way of storytelling, delivered via narration from the great Logan Cunningham and birthed by Greg Kasavin. an immaculate soundtrack to accompany you everywhere you flop, thanks to the now critically acclaimed Darren Korb (+ Ashley Barrett for THE song). one of my favorite game worlds, beautifully broken by the beautifully put together Jen Zee. silky smooth gameplay and optimization done by Gavin Simon and Andrew Wang. the thing ran great even back in 2011 — you'll have no issues with it today. and finally, and perhaps most importantly, thanks to Amir Rao for having the vision and a shout-out to his dad for lending them his house to use as an office. that's just awesome. - enjoyed getting all the steam achievements for this one. it involves you maxing out the difficulty of the game via the shrine system and you're in for a not so good time until: [*]you get used to it [*]find the weapon combo that suits you [*]upgrade said weapon combo [*]level up a few times to unlock all (or most) of your spirit slots via the distillery - the only achievement that felt like a chore is the rarest one — 'Hard Bargain.' it’s rare not because it is the most difficult per se, but it does require you to start a brand new game in the 'Score Attack' mode and grind your way up (see points 1–4). the actual challenge of getting the achievement once you're set up was fun. i failed about 10ish times before nailing it. felt good. gg (i completed it with the spear + musket combo both fully upgraded. char lvl 6) as an aside — dear valve, can we get some shiny border in the library for games we've unlocked all achievements for? pretty pls. - i like the sound your character in bastion makes when you fall off the trail and flop back down. like a pancake made of mud. - the scene where you find Zia by following her voice might be one of my top moments in games and worthy of a 'case of the full body shivers' out of 10. as you approach, her song becomes clearer. the narrator does his thing. the little glances she throws you. the blur of colors once you near her… man.

Instead of buying hades on sale I dusted this title off in my steam library. I remember buying this game back in 2017 but never fully finishing it. I finally played it all the way through and wow, these types of hack and slash games are generally outside of what I normally play so I was worried going into it. I can say with certaintny it's an absolute gem. Deceptively simple, I was very much drawn into the tight and varied combat, catchy western style music, art style, and narration. Another game crossed off the daunting backlog. 4/5

Incredibly well done game. You can see the inspiration here that led to Hades. This game plays out as a similar style isometric 3d action adventure. You get to rebuild the bastion and build your buildings to get permanent bonuses, pick your weapon set, etc. The combat isn't quite as finely well tuned, but it is rewarding and feels good to play. To be fair, this isn't a game you are going to come back to and replay year after year. Nor is it a game of continuous progression where you come to grind out some more powerful stuff. This is kind of a one and done experience. But some of the best gaming experiences I've ever had fit that mold as well. The time you spent, the memories you created, and the feelings you experienced can stick with you. That's what makes great games so great. In that sense... while you may not replay it, the memories of how you felt playing this game will absolutely stick with you. The graphics are top notch, but the music and narration is seriously next level. Honestly one of the greatest narrative experiences I've ever seen in this type of game before. It's amazing that this was Supergiant's first big release (or the first I'm aware of, anyway). The level of passion that went into this is simply stunning. This is one of those rare gem first releases that reminds you just how good independent developers can be when they get the balance right between artistic vision and technical talent. The action is good, the story is good, and the whole experience just clicks. A+ game.

Bastion Review TL;DR The game came out in 2011 and it's criminal that I waited until 2025 to play it. It's short, but a masterpiece. 🎮 Gameplay [*] Combat: Fast-paced, real-time action with a mix of melee and ranged weapons. You can swap loadouts between missions as well as during (at certain points) and experiment with over 10 unique weapons, each upgradable in multiple ways. [*] Replayability: Definitely worth another playthrough in NG+. [*] Controls: Plays very well on both K&M and controller. 📜 Story & World [*] Premise: You wake up after the Calamity—an apocalyptic event that shattered the world into floating fragments. As “The Kid,” you set out to build the Bastion, a safe haven... maybe even a way to fix things. But nothing is that simple. [*] Characters: The cast is small, but meaningful with good backstories. The narrator responds to your every move, and the dry humour is a hit. [*] Worldbuilding: Absolutely incredible - The world literally rebuilts itself as you walk. 🧩 Progression [*] 100%-able?: Sure - but it would be tough. The "10 idol" achievements are extremely challenging. [*] Leveling: Level up to max level 10 to unlock passive buffs. You’ll also build and upgrade a central hub (the Bastion) that gives access to weapon upgrades, challenges, and loadout perks. [*] Gear & Builds: Tons of variety. Dual pistols and a giant hammer? Sure. Bow and flamethrower? Also yes. Mix and match to your heart’s content. 🖼️ Presentation [*] Visuals: Hand-painted art that feels like a storybook in motion. Everything’s vibrant and expressive—no pixels wasted. [*] Audio: A perfect blend of acoustic, electronic, and Western themes. “Build That Wall” hits like a ton of emotional bricks. [*] Performance: Runs perfectly on basically everything—even a potato with a USB port. 🧠 Bonus Bits [*] Mods: Minimal, but not really needed. [*] Multiplayer: Single-player - This is a personal journey. [*] Steam Deck: Works beautifully.
