Incredibly well done game. You can see the inspiration here that led to Hades. This game plays out as a similar style isometric 3d action adventure. You get to rebuild the bastion and build your buildings to get permanent bonuses, pick your weapon set, etc. The combat isn't quite as finely well tuned, but it is rewarding and feels good to play. To be fair, this isn't a game you are going to come back to and replay year after year. Nor is it a game of continuous progression where you come to grind out some more powerful stuff. This is kind of a one and done experience. But some of the best gaming experiences I've ever had fit that mold as well. The time you spent, the memories you created, and the feelings you experienced can stick with you. That's what makes great games so great. In that sense... while you may not replay it, the memories of how you felt playing this game will absolutely stick with you. The graphics are top notch, but the music and narration is seriously next level. Honestly one of the greatest narrative experiences I've ever seen in this type of game before. It's amazing that this was Supergiant's first big release (or the first I'm aware of, anyway). The level of passion that went into this is simply stunning. This is one of those rare gem first releases that reminds you just how good independent developers can be when they get the balance right between artistic vision and technical talent. The action is good, the story is good, and the whole experience just clicks. A+ game.

Bastion Review TL;DR The game came out in 2011 and it's criminal that I waited until 2025 to play it. It's short, but a masterpiece. 🎮 Gameplay [*] Combat: Fast-paced, real-time action with a mix of melee and ranged weapons. You can swap loadouts between missions as well as during (at certain points) and experiment with over 10 unique weapons, each upgradable in multiple ways. [*] Replayability: Definitely worth another playthrough in NG+. [*] Controls: Plays very well on both K&M and controller. 📜 Story & World [*] Premise: You wake up after the Calamity—an apocalyptic event that shattered the world into floating fragments. As “The Kid,” you set out to build the Bastion, a safe haven... maybe even a way to fix things. But nothing is that simple. [*] Characters: The cast is small, but meaningful with good backstories. The narrator responds to your every move, and the dry humour is a hit. [*] Worldbuilding: Absolutely incredible - The world literally rebuilts itself as you walk. 🧩 Progression [*] 100%-able?: Sure - but it would be tough. The "10 idol" achievements are extremely challenging. [*] Leveling: Level up to max level 10 to unlock passive buffs. You’ll also build and upgrade a central hub (the Bastion) that gives access to weapon upgrades, challenges, and loadout perks. [*] Gear & Builds: Tons of variety. Dual pistols and a giant hammer? Sure. Bow and flamethrower? Also yes. Mix and match to your heart’s content. 🖼️ Presentation [*] Visuals: Hand-painted art that feels like a storybook in motion. Everything’s vibrant and expressive—no pixels wasted. [*] Audio: A perfect blend of acoustic, electronic, and Western themes. “Build That Wall” hits like a ton of emotional bricks. [*] Performance: Runs perfectly on basically everything—even a potato with a USB port. 🧠 Bonus Bits [*] Mods: Minimal, but not really needed. [*] Multiplayer: Single-player - This is a personal journey. [*] Steam Deck: Works beautifully.

Recommended for: If you like action RPGs within an isometric setting, a good story, great voice acting and amazing music, then you should certainly give Bastion a try. Bastion's weakest point is probably the gameplay, which is definitely not bad in my opinion, but lacks a certain depth. If you only look at the gameplay, then I think Bastion is more suited for the casual player than the more hardcore action RPG fan. The game is also relatively easy. There are options in-game to make it more challenging, but even then, an experienced action RPG player will probably have no great difficulty beating it. If you consider yourself a veteran RPG fan who focuses only on gameplay and doesn't care much about story, then Bastion might not be the game for you. My experience: I had a good time playing Bastion. I liked the colorful graphics and the voice acting of the Narrator. I thought the story was interesting, although I think they could have expanded a bit more on it. The highlight in my opinion of Bastion is the music. It's simply amazing and I still listen regularly to the OST. Although I don't play many action RPGs myself, I didn't have much trouble beating the game. Like many reviews mention, the gameplay is a bit weak compared to the high quality of the rest of the game. For example, during the whole game I mostly used the same two weapons despite there being many others available. I just didn't feel the need to switch them. Even then the game was never boring for me, but I do recognize that the story, the narrator, and the music did most of the heavy lifting. Technical: I had no technical issues while playing. The first game created by Supergiant Games has aged phenomenally. Bastion has every bit of charm now from when it was initially released. The narration is truly top-notch . Not only is the story, characters, and the world described through it, but subtle information regarding the direction of progression, enemies, and hazards are as well if you pay enough attention. How the player interacts with the level materializing around them is fantastic. The music is stellar and the combat is engaging. Decision-making in the form of upgrades, difficulty modifiers, and stage choices has importance, yet nothing is missable. Superbly designed and cannot recommend this experience enough!
