What a game. This is a serious step up in scope from Battle Chef Brigade, and handled very well. Battle Suit Aces wants very badly to be the TV show about mechs and friendship you watched as a 13-year-old, but it wants to be a version of that show that's exactly as good as you remember without being any more complex. Every level is an episode of a filler arc. Boss fights are part of season finales. Every episode opens with "captain's log XXX-YY". Every character has, at best, three character traits, but taken across a cast of dozens of characters each of those character traits is explored to true exhaustion. Everyone talks to everyone else all the time, and they become three-dimensional as they relate to other people. The card game is great. I can tell I haven't figured it out enough to get all the depth out of it, but there's still so much to do. I need to marinate in this system more to figure out exactly why it's so great. If you're looking at the steam page and thinking "that looks overly simplistic", trust me, it's **incredible**. The only flaw I find with this game is the voice acting. There's genuinely SO MUCH of it! But... it's flat. I would expect some most-important-event-in-the-world Goku screams from a Saturday morning cartoon, or some gravitas or chemistry. It doesn't ruin the game, far from it, but don't expect the VO to make you feel things if the writing doesn't. Battle Suit Aces is narratively simple, simple in gameplay, large in scope. Does it stick the landing? No idea! I was having so much fun that I had to stop playing and write this review to make sure you played it too.

As someone who's very much enjoyed Battle Chef Brigade and regularly played the daily and survival modes, I was excited for what Trinket Studios was gonna do next. The game we finally got, Battle Suit Aces, is certainly a game that plays to their strengths: A large variety of characters with clear relationships/camaraderie and excellent voice acting. I'm a sucker for good voice acting and fun character interactions. The gameplay portion is practically a rougelite card battler, but I find it difficult to call it that when there's no real deck-building involved and no real rougelite mechanics. Cards (Suits and Drones) are added to your deck as you acquire them, with most coming from advancing Factions, and cards are modified by using mods. And that's it? Yeah, that's it. There's pros and cons to this approach that I ultimately enjoy with caveats. At first the game feels very basic which is natural while it slowly introduces new mechanics with every fight. Most of the first act introduces something new every fight, whether it's a new color type, a new type of trigger to use/avoid, or a new buff/debuff. You get plenty of time to learn so you're not truly being overwhelmed with too many new things at once. I found that after acquiring the first two Factions, the depth starts picking up and getting actually interesting. At this point you realize two important things: 1. There are three colors (Red Green Blue) and you have mostly Red and Blue cards, with two Green Drones. Cards can only bank and use energy of their own color, so these two Green Drones bloat your deck. 2. You cannot exclude any acquired cards! These two Green Drones only support themselves, they do nothing else but to take up space and unnecessarily limit your choices when they do come up in draws. There's no point to using Green Drones that only support themselves when you can use literally any other card that does support other cards. This is a design choice that goes against the way the game is naturally played. You'll naturally want to focus on building towards a single color or a specific play style for the combo synergy, but you're encouraged to acquire as many Suits as possible. Each Suit comes with a pilot, which means more characters and more interactions. And more cards, more options, and potentially more bloat that you cannot remove. But the game isn't designed for a one-size-fits-all approach. Battle Suit Aces features a large variety of triggers and mechanics to keep you on your toes: everything has counter play to get around it. Armor and Plate stacking? Damage that triggers on move and/or hit to melt it. Spread and Sweepers? Weakening and Spike to diminish and punish. Solo-color? Dampen and Chaining to negate and wipe. Big numbers? Damage limiters. If you were able to exclude cards and focus on your own play style, you could very easily find yourself in unwinnable situations from being hard-countered. To make bloat a little easier to avoid, when you achieve a new faction level you get to pick which card or mod you acquire. You can still focus on a color or play-style by picking only the faction cards that support it, and grabbing mods when no cards are left for it. Mods can enhance a Suit or Drone's strength, add new abilities, or change how they work entirely. And the game is fairly generous with redraws, you get one every turn plus you can spend the one Command point you get every turn for a second redraw (and a third redraw for 2 more Command points), that's 6-8 cards every turn to pick which to play. So I find it difficult to advocate for the ability to exclude cards. I just wish those Green Drones wouldn't populate if there are no Green Suits to go with them. Ultimately I've had a lot of fun with Battle Suit Aces. But it's definitely not for everyone. Rather than being a roguelite with random elements to build with, it's a story-based card collector that encourages full-on multiple playthroughs to experience the different ways to play it. For some people that can be a tough sell, but I found it worth while once I sat down and got past the initial introductory missions.

Excellent mechanics, great sound design, great voice acting, and overall high quality work. It oozes passion and dedication. My only quip is that it feels like there's still unfinished art in some of the vignettes but the game has me utterly absorbed. I also shout out to the SIM puzzles! They are really cute brain teasers and some of them have had me stumped. Can't wait to finish the game.

Absolutely amazing stuff. The card gameplay is super fun once you get the hang of it which is SUPER IMPORTANT! Recruiting different characters and choice in what you want to do with build diversity and various customization options to bend the cards to your will! It’s so addicting! The story and characters and lore are a massive bonus here as it’s very interesting and well written and everyone will come away with favorite characters even some throwaway ones! Fully voiced dialogue makes this game and I appreciate it’s there! The art style is wonderful and the score is a delight! Any Gwent or Magic The Gathering fan would love this game BATTLE. SUIT. ACES.
