This game is HEAVY with an 80s cyberpunk theme going on with its environments capturing all angles of life within it, such as those inside a laboratory, a derelict neighborhood housing gangs, corporate megastructures, and high-rolling banks. It's the type of game made by a very talented team that feels like it was developed by a AA studio instead. The combat in the beginning of the game is brain-dead easy, rarely ever requiring anything else besides your katana and maybe a shotgun for the flamers. Yet later on in the game it begins to challenge you with sheer numbers and the diversity of enemy types making it quite easy to be overwhelmed but a fun challenge nevertheless. The bosses however are not much to be said for besides the last boss in which was a lot more challenging but a lot more fun. The biggest flaw in the game is how easy you can get lost in the levels. There's so much to explore, especially with the first and second level, that it's hard to maintain a clear objective on what you're supposed to do. You may find yourself walking around trying to figure out where to go, which at times put me off the game for a bit but I'm glad to stick around in it. The story isn't much as the game seems to focus on worldbuilding more through its secrets and interactions with people you can find in the levels themselves.

Great environment and setting. In first person games, I want to feel as if I were inside an awesome world and that's something this game provides. The Metacorp Citadel is that kind of awesome, but the derelict neighborhoods are also as captivating. I played the demo in the past and found the game really fun. So since then I waited for it to go into sale. I don't buy as many games today as I used to, but this is one I was eager to buy as soon as I was able to. There are mainly two gameplay aspects people should have in mind before buying it. The first one is all the bosses require the same level of mobility from the player as bosses from non-FPS action games. They even feature bullet hell like attack patterns. While I've read people complaining that is too much for first person, defeating the bosses is perfectly doable once you figure out their patterns. However, the final boss is way tougher than all the previous ones, she may even seem impossibly hard at first, but once you find the most appropriate course of action, she too becomes doable. The second aspect is many times the room you're in is locked and you're forced to fight a huge gauntlet that may go for too long. That may ruin your experience if you're not that committed to the game. If you're up to the challenge, though, it's not impossible and it's worth it. I just wished the makers or the distro had gone with a better capsule art for the game in order to attract more players. And I'd love to read more about the lore of the game in some wiki. I'm a fictional worlds enjoyer. And thank goodness people still make games that won’t need us to upgrade our machines in these cyberpunk times of late capitalism and ever worsening precarization.

Beyond Sunset, beautiful design and world building, mostly fun combat and exploration. Context: Completed the games once on normal difficulty, took about 9.5 hours. Generally enjoy boomer shooters. - Ultimately I enjoyed it. Would recommend to others who enjoy zDoom based games. - If you have tried zDoom based games before and found them rough, this offering will not change your mind. - Getting to the end is little rough, and isn't without some frustration. The are 5 levels, each made up of different connected maps, and each with its own distinct theme and feeling. Its a shoot shoot through out, but different quirks add flavor to the different levels. Zones are beautifully designed and detailed. It is also impressively vertical for this engine. All creating a fun world to world to explore start to end. There also felt an like appropriate amount of enemy variation. Some are reused quite heavily, or given slight upgrades, but arenas never felt boring to fight. My main two gripes coming out of the game relate to navigation and economy. -Navigation: The game does use the doom automap, however this is not always the most intuitive and this is complicated further by the detail and verticality of the levels. The amount of looping back and key doors to move on was fun, but created moments of 'where do I go now.' I do appreciate being allowed to explore and not yellow-ledged through out the whole game, however there were more lost moments that I would like. -Economy: there is a tight balance of health and ammo here. Picks up are placed in world, but are limited and do not respawn. To supplement this the game uses a doom eternal style system where certain damage causes enemies to drop ammo and health. Here, use of this sweep system is limited by a charge that is also based on kills. I ran into many situations where I was low on ammo, could use the sweep ability to get more.. but I would blow through that stock before recharging the sweep to able to continue. You can use the low tier melee and pistol for free, but these do little to larger enemies. Ultimately leading to grindy situations where I peaked corners with a pistol trying clear out enemies, rather than pushing forward. Again, it was fun. Well worth the cost, and didn't overstay. Those lost moments (literal, where do I go... and metaphorical, I don't have the ammo for this fight...) just came up a bit more often than I would like.
